Book International Symposium

  • Pages : 604 pages

Download or read book International Symposium written by Werner H. Hauss and published by VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften. This book was released on 1978 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is suggested that the stenosing effects of atherosclerosis may be offset by regression of the lesion, senescent dilatation of the arterial wall and by enlargement of anastomotic channels. Regression is slow and such inertia is attributed to: absence of cholesterol catabolic enzymes; disproportion of the ratio of LDLlHDL; physical inaccessibility of crystalline cholesterol; and relative absence of reticuloendothelial phagocytes. Moderate dilatation of the human coronary arterial wall with advancing age seems to compen sate for the inward encroachment of atherosclerosis on the lumen, hence the status quo ante may be preserved. Severe atrophy with gross dilatation (ectasia) leads to haemodynamic difficulties with slow circulation as a result of marked fall in perfusion pressure. Such overdilated ectatic coronary arteries are particularly liable to undergo thrombosis. References Adams, C. W. M. , and Bayliss, O. B. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program committee of the Fifth International Symposium on Atherosclerosis was to bring together experts in many disciplines to broaden the scope of the attack on this disease and to foster interaction. Our hope was that such interaction would accelerate the eradication of the disease. The symposium achieved that objective and con tinued the tradition of the previous symposia in providing a forum for summaries of recent research developments in the study, treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis. The leading authorities and researchers in this field and in the related areas of interest have presented the newest information, concepts and ideas that have evolved in the past three years since the previous meeting in Tokyo. The most promising fields for future investigation are clearly identified, as are the nature of the controversies that persist in some highly important aspects of treatment of this disease. The appearance of these proceedings so soon after the meeting will greatly enhance the impact of the symposium on current research in atherosclerosis. The program committee is particularly indebted to the excellent response of the inves tigators for their willingness to participate in the symposium and for their successful efforts in bringing high quality to their presentations. Their cooperation in the expeditious delivery of manuscripts for this volume has been particularly gratifying. The efforts of Ms. Barbara Allen in preparing this volume bear special note.

Book Expanding Horizons in Atherosclerosis Research

Download or read book Expanding Horizons in Atherosclerosis Research written by Günter Schlierf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 29 February 1964, a group of European scientists met in Paris to discuss a subject of common interest, namely atherosclerosis research, with particular reference to international communication and collaboration. After a second meeting on 15 May 1964, they founded the European Atherosclerosis Group which was to com prise individuals engaged in the various disciplines of atherosclero sis research in Eastern and Western Europe. Since then this group has initiated multidisciplinary discussion and scientific collabora tion across Europe, in accordance with the objects and aims written in its statutes: 1. To hold colloquia and symposia dealing with research in the field of atherosclerosis and allied sciences 2. To encourage meetings and exchanges between scientists in the group engaged in the investigation of atherosclerosis 3. To encourage collaborative work between national and interna tional centers engaged in atherosclerosis research 4. To encourage the publication of reviews, etc. , on atherosclerosis research which may be considered of value 5. To promote research fellowships, particularly for younger research workers, for studies within the field of atherosclerosis and allied sciences 6. To accept dues, endowments, grants, funds, and bequests to be used for the above purposes The European Atherosclerosis Group has helped to bring together what was separated during the second world war and the postwar period in Europe and to reestablish ties with the leading American teams.

Book Intracranial Atherosclerosis

Download or read book Intracranial Atherosclerosis written by Jong S. Kim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intracranial atherosclerosis is the dominant cause of stroke inover 70% of the world’s population. Globalization is leadingto an increasingly heterogeneous society everywhere. Advances inimaging techinology allow this previously inaccessible pathology tobe clinically studied. Edited by internationally renowned clinicians, IntracranialAtherosclerosis is the first book to examine intracranialcauses of stroke. Clinical practice is allied with basic science toguide all those with an interest in stroke on the diagnosis andmanagement of intracranial atherosclerosis.

Book The Thrombotic Process in Atherogenesis

Download or read book The Thrombotic Process in Atherogenesis written by A. B. Chandler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two infonnal meetings of consultants expert in hemostatic phenomena and in atherogenesis were held in Bethesda, Maryland, in December 1975 and February 1976 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Their purpose was to discuss the current status of knowledge concerning the thrombotic process in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. It was readily agreed that thrombosis often played a major role in plaque building and in plaque complication. It was also commented, however, that the data were qualitative in nature and that quantitative infonnation was remarkably sparse. The term thromboatherogenesis was thought to be appropriate for those phenomena in which the full expression of the thrombotic process is manifest. At the same time, recent research was noted in which what appears to be an important pathway for the initiation of atherogenesis arises from the reaction of platelets with injured arterial endothelium and'Subendothelium without necessarily involving the complete classical thrombotic process. A name was not coined for this circumstance, but it was held that thromboatherogenesis was not a fully appropriate one.

Book Factors in Formation and Regression of the Atherosclerotic Plaque

Download or read book Factors in Formation and Regression of the Atherosclerotic Plaque written by Gustav R.V. Born and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the field of atherosclerosis research has broadened in recent years. However the main focus remains on the physiopathology of the arterial wall and on its interaction with blood constituents. The purpose of this NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Factors in Formation and Regression of the Atherosclerotic Plaque" was to discuss the following points: a) The physiopathology of the arterial wall; b) Animal models; c) Methods of studying the progression and regression of atherosclerotic lesions quantitatively; d) The role of lipoproteins, platelets, smoke, alcohol, etc. in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions; e) The pharmacological and dietary control of "risk factors." This volume is a collection of the most relevant presentations on these topics. We hope it will provide a background for young scientists as well as a stimulus for further research to biologists and clinicians. We wish to acknowledge the support of NATO and the Nutrition Foundation of Italy in organizing this Advanced Study Institute.
