Book International Student athlete Perception of College Sport and Its Effect on Adjustment to College

Download or read book International Student athlete Perception of College Sport and Its Effect on Adjustment to College written by Nels Popp and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 2004-05 school year, over 10,000 international student-athletes competed for National Collegiate Athletic Association schools (NCAA, 2006b). Few researchers have examined how international student-athletes' college experiences compare to domestic student-athletes. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to adaptation to college, (b) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to their view of the purpose of college sports, and (c) to determine whether student-athletes' views on the purpose of college sport help predict social adjustment to college or institutional attachment. A national sample of international and domestic student-athletes from 11 NCAA Division I institutions completed an instrument comprised of the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales from the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Baker and Siryk, 1989) and the seven factor scales from a modified version of the Purpose of Sport Questionnaire developed by Duda (1989). A total of 288 student-athletes completed the instrument, 174 of whom were international student-athletes representing 49 different countries. Results showed international student-athletes scored significantly lower on the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales compared to domestic studentathletes. Among the seven purpose of sport factors, only the factor of competitiveness revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with international student-athletes ranking the factor lower than domestic student-athletes. None of the purpose of sport factors significantly predicted social adjustment to college for either domestic or international student-athletes. Several purpose of sport factors significantly predicted institutional attachment, however. A discussion of results and their implications are outlined.

Book College Student Athletes

Download or read book College Student Athletes written by Michael T. Miller and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a critical and objective study of the contemporary college student athlete. Framed around the process of recruitment, transition, and support of student athletes in higher education, the volume is a response to societal pressures to reform college athletics. Driven by publicity and the potential for revenue gains, colleges and universities have invested heavily in developing athletic programs, coaches, and facilities. Yet few resources are invested strategically in the personal and intellectual development of student athletes. Written by a team of authors with first-hand experience working with student athletes and transitional programs, the volume argues that institutional attention must be directed at caring for the personal and intellectual growth of student athletes. Highlighting some best-practice curricula and exploring the psychological issues surrounding participating in often highly-competitive athletics, the authors consistently conclude that institutional responsibility is of the utmost and immediate importance. Authors also consider the unique settings of student athletes in community and private liberal arts colleges, demonstrating the broad interest in athletics and institutional competition. The result is an important volume that will be of interest to those who counsel and administer intercollegiate athletic programs, faculty and researchers looking for insightful baseline data on the contemporary student athlete, and those concerned with transitional programs and the future of higher education.

Book Student athlete Perceptions of Increased Internationalization in College Athletics

Download or read book Student athlete Perceptions of Increased Internationalization in College Athletics written by Erica Zonder and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of the increase in the number of international student-athletes in Division I college athletics on the experience of international and domestic student-athletes, specifically by investigating the perceptions of female athletes participating in sports that have high percentages of international student-athlete involvement. Scholarship opportunities, school choice, playing time, and recruiting are all areas that were explored through a questionnaire. This study potentially fills a gap in the research regarding the increased participation by international student-athletes on both the domestic and international student-athlete experience. Results indicated that international and domestic student-athletes had different perceptions of their recruiting experience than student-athletes of the opposite status, and further, different factors were important in terms of school choice. Both domestic and international student-athletes believed that there were similar scholarship opportunities in their sport, regardless of status, and further, that their sport had a high number of international participants.

Book Acculturation Antecedents and Outcomes Associated with International and Domestic Student athlete Adjustment to College

Download or read book Acculturation Antecedents and Outcomes Associated with International and Domestic Student athlete Adjustment to College written by Lynn L. Ridinger and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of international student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics at American colleges and universities has been growing steadily (NCAA, 1996a). As the recruiting landscape for college coaches expands into international arenas, knowledge about international student-athletes is becoming increasingly pertinent. Research in this area, however, has been scant. This study was undertaken to determine how well international student-athletes were adjusting to college relative not only to their American teammates, but also to the general student body, which included both domestic and international students. In addition to comparing adjustment levels, this study investigated antecedents and outcomes of adjustment that were specific to student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Acculturation Model was developed to serve as a framework for examining relationships associated with the acculturation process faced by both international and domestic student-athletes. Data were collected from students and student-athletes enrolled at a large Midwestern university. The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) (Baker & Siryk, 1989) was sent to international students (n = 317), domestic students (n = 379), international student-athletes (n = 50), and domestic student-athletes (n = 269). All student-athletes in the sample received an additional questionnaire entitled Factors Associated with Student-Athlete Adjustment to College (FASAAC).

Book The International Student athlete Transition to College

Download or read book The International Student athlete Transition to College written by Emily Marie Newell and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International student-athletes (ISAs) are one of the fastest growing subpopulations in intercollegiate athletics, increasing at a rate that is far outpacing the overall student-athlete growth in NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics. This growth demonstrates the increased need to study this population in terms of the experienced issues during the transition and ways in which colleges and universities, as well as intercollegiate athletic departments, can better support this population for retention and success (NCAA, 2015). This study examines the between group differences of international student-athletes and domestic student-athletes.

Book The Miseducation of the Student Athlete

Download or read book The Miseducation of the Student Athlete written by Kenneth L. Shropshire and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 DIGITAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST SOCIAL IMPACT BOOK The student-athlete's life: practice, gym, weight room, film review, repeat. Simply put, sports come first. Academics is a distant second. As the revenues generated by big-time college sports continue to skyrocket, virtually all of the debate involves whether (and how much) student-athletes should be paid for play. Kenneth L. Shropshire and Collin D. Williams, Jr., argue that "student" has to come first in student-athlete: the focus should be on prioritizing a meaningful education. In The Miseducation of the Student Athlete: How to Fix College Sports, Shropshire and Williams draw on new research to reveal that it has become increasingly difficult for college athletes to balance school and sports, much less a social life, leading to serious economic, professional, and emotional consequences for young people. Given that fewer than 2% of all college men's basketball and football players will play at the professional level, the other 98% of student-athletes must be prepared to find and perform well in jobs outside of their respective field of play. In this bold call to action, Shropshire and Williams explain how we got here and what can be done about it. They lay out The Student-Athlete Manifesto, a roadmap to increase the likelihood that student-athletes can succeed both on and off the field. They also offer a Meaningful Degree Model, which ensures education pays for everyone, along with stories of success that show it is possible to be both a student and an athlete. A critical read for student-athletes, sports leadership, policy makers, and anyone who loves college sports, The Miseducation of the Student Athlete has the potential to disrupt college sport and create lasting change.

Book The Impact of Covid 19 on Identity Formation Coping and College Transition of NCAA Greek Student athletes

Download or read book The Impact of Covid 19 on Identity Formation Coping and College Transition of NCAA Greek Student athletes written by Theoklitos Karipidis and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spread of Covid-19 has been a disruptive force on society, wreaking unprecedented havoc on people's daily lives. This unwelcomed disruption has mirrored elements of forced transition, bringing psychological symptoms and the psychosocial impact previously seen in athletes whose athletic careers are unexpectedly terminated by injury, deselection, or another similar traumatic event. For International Student-Athletes (ISA), the transition to college is a period marked by multiple challenges since they have to adjust to a new academic, athletic, social, and cultural environment. Covid-19, perceived as a significant transition, hit the first-year ISAs while going through the traditional process of transitioning to college. This study explored the perceptions of Greek student-athletes who experienced the Covid-19 transition during their first year of college in the United States. Aspects of subjective well-being and identity formation were assessed. Using the Consensual Qualitative Research methodology (CQR), findings suggest that studying and playing at a competitive level was the top motivation for Greek ISAs to pursue a degree in the United States. The American experience favorably impacted Greek ISAs (e.g., maturity, open-mindedness, professionalism), while the compulsory athletic restriction and social isolation during the Covid-19 outbreak posed additional psychosocial challenges.

Book Perception of College Adjustment and Institutional Attachment Among Student athletes of Color at a Predominantly White Institution and Its Relation to Academic Motivation

Download or read book Perception of College Adjustment and Institutional Attachment Among Student athletes of Color at a Predominantly White Institution and Its Relation to Academic Motivation written by Clewiston Challenger and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between college adjustment, self-efficacy, academic buoyancy and academic motivation among student-athletes of color at a predominantly White institution (PWI) that participate in Division I sports. Historically, institutions of higher education, founded by White male educators and businessmen, designed their schools primarily for White students. Students of color where not permitted to attend such institutions nor compete against them athletically. After the integration of schools, college administrators and coaches saw the opportunity to recruit student-athletes of color in an effort to create winning teams, fill stadium seats, and to generate revenue. Some PWI campuses were not as welcoming to student-athletes of color because they lacked diversity, some did not foster a welcoming racial or cultural atmosphere, and many were not as inclusive. Some athletes faced discrimination and racism on campus which may have been a factor in their academic motivation. This study examined the perception student-athletes of color have of their non-cognitive factors (i.e. college adjustment, self-efficacy, and academic buoyancy), athletic status, and race and how it influenced their motivation (i.e. intrinsic or extrinsic) toward academics. Twenty-eight Division I student-athletes of color at a large PWI public university participated in the study. Each athlete completed a 20-minute Likert-type survey that asked questions about their college experience, perception of adjustment, self-efficacy, academic buoyancy, and motivation toward academics. The results of the study found college adjustment, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation toward academics to relate among student-athletes of color. No significant relation was found between the three variables of self-efficacy, academic buoyancy and overall academic motivation as hypothesized by the researcher.

Book The Effects of Optimism Coping Strategies and the Sport Team Environment on College Adjustment

Download or read book The Effects of Optimism Coping Strategies and the Sport Team Environment on College Adjustment written by Brett C. Haskell and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Research has shown that personality variables, such as optimism and coping, and integration into the college environment predict students' adjustment to college (Aspinwall & Taylor, 1992; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1975). However, none of the research available has investigated how the combination of personality characteristics and integration into the sport environment impact the college adjustment of athletes (Melendez, 2007). The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between optimism, coping strategies, and sport integration as it influences college student-athlete adjustment. A questionnaire packet was used to measure optimism, coping, perceptions of sport integration, and college adjustment. Results of multiple regression analysis revealed that commitment to one's team and sport goals, and one's use of positive reframing, instrumental support, denial, and self blame were significant predictors of athletes' overall adjustment to college. This finding supports the hypothesis that for student-athletes successful integration into specific sport structures in combination with certain personality characteristics can effectively improve adjustment to college."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Dislocation and Adjustment of International Student Athletes

Download or read book Dislocation and Adjustment of International Student Athletes written by Thiago Brito Lopes and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One reason that attracts international student-athletes to American universities could be the interest in earning high quality education with the possibility of playing high performance sports. However, when compared to other international students, differences are seen: Other foreign students who look for a degree in the US desire not only an international education, but also potentially staying in the country. The University of San Francisco, where a cosmopolitan city meets education, fits it best. At USF, 82 countries are represented, reaching a number of 1708 students. Approximately 1⁄4 of the whole student population is international. The ratio with student-athletes is not different, from which 49 of them are foreigners, coming from 20 countries, representing almost a third of the whole athletics department. This study analyzes how sports contribute within their adjustment in comparison with general students, and how sports ease this process, after arriving from their home countries. Aspects such as food, weather, language barriers, campus life and academic challenges have been observed to make that comparison. Also, we will understand if living in San Francisco, a city compromised with diversity and non-discrimination, makes a positive difference within the acclimatization to life abroad. With that said, it will be possible to analyze major advantages of international student-athletes over non-athletes. Being welcomed by the athletic community (teammates, coaches and athletes from other sports) creates a feeling of belonging. This environment, however, has disadvantages. For instance, athletes are isolated from the rest of campus activities, missing a connection between the athletics department and the rest of the school. Because of their busy routines, they have no time to get involved with other activities on campus. For that, at the end of this study it is recommended the creation of an office within the athletics department that would work to include athletes (Americans and foreigners) in other campus activities, such as University Ministry, for example.

Book An Exploration of the Relationships Between the Quality of the Sport Social and Academic Experiences of College Student athletes and Their Adjustment to College

Download or read book An Exploration of the Relationships Between the Quality of the Sport Social and Academic Experiences of College Student athletes and Their Adjustment to College written by Susan L. Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Intercollegiate athletics at major universities provide a variety of opportunities and challenges for student-athletes who choose to participate. This qualitative project studies the quality of interactions in the sport, the social, and the academic experiences for freshman football and male soccer student-athletes and their adjustment to college. The five research questions under review were as follows: Is there a relationship between the quality of the sport experience and adjustment to college as reported by freshman football and male soccer student-athletes attending a NCAA Division I-A institution? Is there a relationship between the quality of the social experience and adjustment to college as reported by freshman football and male soccer student-athletes attending a NCAA Division I-A institution? Is there a relationship between the quality of the academic experience and adjustment to college as reported by freshman football and male soccer student-athletes attending a NCAA Division I-A institution? Are there relationships between any two of the three experiences (sport, social, and academic) that affect adjustment to college as reported by freshman football and male soccer student-athletes attending a NCAA Division I-A institution? Does the adjustment to college relate to interactions among all three experiences in any comprehensive way as reported by freshman football and male soccer student-athletes attending a NCAA Division I-A institution? The purpose of the study was to hear in the student-athletes' authentic voices their descriptions of the quality of the sport, the social and the academic endeavors and how those interactions impacted their adjustment to college. The results imply that the freshman football and male soccer student-athletes, while enduring some challenges, find ways to adjust to college as both students and as athletes. Several themes were ascertained in relation to each of the three areas under review. While the student-athletes expressed feelings indicating that their collegiate experiences were different from the experiences of students not participating in intercollegiate athletics, the majority of them revealed a high level of comfort in their college environment. They all felt attached to the university, and they all planned to return for their sophomore year.

Book Transitions and Adustments sic of International Student athletes

Download or read book Transitions and Adustments sic of International Student athletes written by Gina Bartolacci and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adjustment experiences of thirteen international student-athletes at Penn State University were examined through semi-structured qualitative interviews held with these students. Five intercollegiate head coaches with experience recruiting and coaching international student-athletes were also interviewed to gain their perspective. Theory triangulation was used to examine the data which revealed that their experience required adjustment in three areas: to new culture, to the overall college experience, and to their new athletic environment. The findings are discussed relative to current literature on international student-athletes. This study may benefit international-student athletes beginning their experience in the United States as well as coaches, teammates, and administrators whose interests are furthered by the retention and successful adjustment of these athletes.

Book An Examination of the Relationship Between Athletic Satisfaction and Student Adaptation to College

Download or read book An Examination of the Relationship Between Athletic Satisfaction and Student Adaptation to College written by Brian C. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the experience of student-athletes at the collegiate level suggests that they may face challenges and hurdles in adjusting to college differently than those faced by students of the general student population. Additionally, research on student satisfaction suggests that a student's satisfaction has an impact on the academic experience and retention of students, while research on athletic satisfaction suggests a relationship exists between athletic and academic satisfaction for student-athletes. However, it remains unclear whether there is a positive or negative relationship between the experiences of adjustment to college and athletic satisfaction of a student-athlete. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between various facets of athletic satisfaction and specific areas of adjustment from high school to college for Division 1A intercollegiate athletes in order to bring a broader perspective of understanding to the holistic experience of first-year student-athletes. In a quantitative research tradition using a correlative research design, the researcher examines the concepts using the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) and the Athletic Satisfaction Questionnaire (ASQ) in surveying first-year student-athletes (n = 76) at an NCAA Division I FBS institution. Based on the findings of this research, it is reasonable to conclude that for the first-year student-athletes in this study, a positive relationship exists between athletic satisfaction and adjustment to college. For both academic and athletic administrators, the findings suggest that the experience of a student-athlete should not be compartmentalized and that the academic, athletic, and social experiences of a student-athlete are interconnected. Additionally, in examining specific subgroups of student-athletes by gender, ethnicity, type of sport (revenue vs. non-revenue) and athletic aid status (scholarship vs. non-scholarship), the findings indicate that the subgroups experienced the relationship between athletic satisfaction and adjustment to college differently. Furthermore, the major takeaway for academic support services personnel is that regardless of the specific subgroup of student-athletes, satisfaction with academic support services is unequivocally the highest area of positive correlation with a student-athlete's adjustment to college.

Book Exploring Black Female Student Athletes Perceptions of Career Transition from Collegiate Sport Using Visual Elicitation

Download or read book Exploring Black Female Student Athletes Perceptions of Career Transition from Collegiate Sport Using Visual Elicitation written by Bassey E. Akpan and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:This qualitative study was designed to gather descriptive data through the use of visual elicitation and semi structured interviews to better understand the perception of and transition experiences of Black female athletes. Specifically, this phenomenological approach explored the salient factors that influence those perceptions and looked at how factors such as race, gender, athletic identity and athletic status intersect and influence their transition experiences. A sample (N=4) of participants who identified as Black female student athletes were interviewed and five superordinate themes were identified from the data: Perceptions of Visual Profile, Lack of People of Color (POC) Representation, Impact of Identity, Microaggressions, and Perceptions of own transition. Results indicated that participant’s racial and gender and athletic identities influenced their perceptions of life beyond sport. Findings are discussed collectively and implications for training are provided.

Book An Examination of International Student Athletes Traveling to the United States to Play College Sport

Download or read book An Examination of International Student Athletes Traveling to the United States to Play College Sport written by Cornell Edison Foo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described as the most dominant form of sport migration today, the literature appears to largely support the stance that there are a multitude of adjustment issues being faced by international student athletes (ISA) upon arriving in The United States. From the expectations placed on them from coaches and teammates alike to the increased competitive nature of collegiate sports, International student athletes are exposed to a great number of stressors that may put them at a disadvantage and create an environment prone to failure. The purpose of this study is to assess the reasons why international student athletes come to the US to play college sport, explore ISA recruitment as a form of sport migration, and reexamine the adjustment issues that seem to plague such journeys. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, 8 participants were interviewed on two separate occasions. With a phenomenological approach used to analyze collected data, the themes that emerged were exodus, a lack of established professional soccer networks, success at home and role modeling. Combined, these factors provide explanations on why male ISAs from Trinidad and Tobago would travel to the United States to play collegiate soccer.
