Book Grammatical and Syntactical Approaches in Architecture Emerging Research and Opportunities

Download or read book Grammatical and Syntactical Approaches in Architecture Emerging Research and Opportunities written by Lee, Ju Hyun and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shape grammar and space syntax have been separately developed but rarely combined in any significant way. The first of these is typically used to investigate or generate the formal or geometric properties of architecture, while the second is used to analyze the spatial, topological, or social properties of architecture. Despite the reciprocal relationship between form and space in architecture—it is difficult to conceptualize a completed building without a sense of both of these properties—the two major computational theories have been largely developed and applied in isolation from each another. Grammatical and Syntactical Approaches in Architecture: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a critical scholarly resource that explores the relationship between shape grammar and space syntax for urban planning and architecture and enables the creative discovery of both the formal and spatial features of an architectural style or type. This book, furthermore, presents a new method to selectively capture aspects of both the grammar and syntax of architecture. Featuring a range of topics such as mathematical analysis, spatial configuration, and domestic architecture, this book is essential for architects, policymakers, urban planners, researchers, academicians, and students.

Book Research Culture in Architecture

Download or read book Research Culture in Architecture written by Cornelie Leopold and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in and on architecture is as complex as the discipline itself with its different specialist fields, and therefore the results often remain unconnected. Research Culture in Architecture combines digital and analog research issues and demonstrates how important cross-disciplinary cooperation in architecture is today. The complexity and increasing specialization are elaborated on in the various chapters and then linked to the core of architecture, i.e. design. Scientists from the theoretical and practical fields present research results in the following subjects: "design methodology", "architectural space, perception, and the human body", "analog and digital timber construction", "visualization", "robotics", "architectural practice and research", and "sustainability".

Book excerpt: This book contributes to current debates on the relationship between architecture and the social sciences, highlighting current interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching as well as research and practice in architecture and urbanism. It also raises awareness about the complementarities and tensions between the spaces of the project, including the construction spaces and living space. It gives voice to recent projects and socio-territorial interventions, focusing on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches between society and space. Divided into two parts, the first part discusses the possible dialogue between social sciences and architecture, while the second part explores architecture, politics and social change in urban territories from a European perspective.

Book New Architecture Of Science The Learning From Graphene

Download or read book New Architecture Of Science The Learning From Graphene written by Kostya S Novoselov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Architecture of Science explores how the architecture of advanced nanoscience labs affects the way scientists think, conduct experiments, interact and collaborate. The unique design of the National Graphene Institute in Manchester, UK sheds light on the new generation of 21st century science laboratories. Weaving together two tales of this building, lead scientist and one of the designers, Kostya Novoselov, and architectural anthropologist, Albena Yaneva, combine an analysis of its distinctive design features with ethnographic observation of the practices of scientists, facility managers, technicians, administrators and house service staff. Capturing simultaneously the complex technical infrastructure and the variability of human experiences that it facilitates, contemporary laboratory buildings are shown to be vital settings for the active shaping of new research habits and ways of thinking, ultimately leading to discovery and socio-technical innovations.Related Link(s)

Book Biomimetic Research for Architecture and Building Construction

Download or read book Biomimetic Research for Architecture and Building Construction written by Jan Knippers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises a first survey of the Collaborative Research Center SFB-TRR 141 ‘Biological Design and Integrative Structures – Analysis, Simulation and Implementation in Architecture’, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft since October 2014. The SFB-TRR 141 provides a collaborative framework for architects and engineers from the University of Stuttgart, biologists and physicists from the University of Freiburg and geoscientists and evolutionary biologists from the University of Tübingen. The programm is conceptualized as a dialogue between the disciplines and is based on the belief that that biomimetic research has the potential to lead everyone involved to new findings far beyond his individual reach. During the last few decades, computational methods have been introduced into all fields of science and technology. In architecture, they enable the geometric differentiation of building components and allow the fabrication of porous or fibre-based materials with locally adjusted physical and chemical properties. Recent developments in simulation technologies focus on multi-scale models and the interplay of mechanical phenomena at various hierarchical levels. In the natural sciences, a multitude of quantitative methods covering diverse hierarchical levels have been introduced. These advances in computational methods have opened a new era in biomimetics: local differentiation at various scales, the main feature of natural constructions, can for the first time not only be analysed, but to a certain extent also be transferred to building construction. Computational methodologies enable the direct exchange of information between fields of science that, until now, have been widely separated. As a result they lead to a new approach to biomimetic research, which, hopefully, contributes to a more sustainable development in architecture and building construction.

Book Architecture Computing and the Second World War

Download or read book Architecture Computing and the Second World War written by Joao Rocha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture, Computing and the Second World War explores the history of digital architecture from the 1930s to the 1970s, depicting the interdisciplinary connections between the British avant-garde and the scientific milieu at the beginning of World War II. Interest in digital architecture has increased exponentially in recent years, due to the rising recognition of its importance. This book offers a historical account of the premises that fostered this multidisciplinary domain, enriching our understanding of the intellectual and cultural history that provided the context for the creation of architectural computing in the UK and USA. It examines the interwar period, ending in the late 1930s, as the starting point for a new enquiry into the building sciences and the emergence of design computing, using examples from research carried out at the LUBFS Centre at Cambridge, the Architecture Machine Group at MIT and the Design Research Center at Carnegie Mellon, along with photographs from the period, to illustrate the history of architectural computation.
