Book excerpt: To penetrate the United States and Britain's markets with illicit drugs, Jamaican traffickers employed diverse and novel transportation methods and techniques in the post-1990 era that were more sophisticated than the trafficking of the 1980's. This transformation was particularly due to traffickers exploiting global processes to enhance their illegal drug industry. In response, Jamaica, America, and Britain have continuously established state-oriented actions aimed at curtailing the cross-border drug trade, thereby reflecting their resilience in combating this problem. This book explores past and present drug trafficking within the context of globalisation and examines state instituted responses to curb this problem. It demystifies the Jamaican, British, and American states' roles in the face of global security threats, such as drug trafficking, arguing that both developed and developing states pursue their national interests and maximize their goals through the exercise of state-power in controlling their territories and protecting their nationals from harm posed by traffickers.

It has shown that even nation states with a long history of conflict are capable of collaborating with one another to serve their own interests. However, the EU project has also made visible that there is no one-size-fits-all policy in economics that can be applied to all countries with success. Economics starts and ends with the society. Common culture determines the outcomes of economic policies, and ordinary people pick up the bill when policies turn out to be failures. This book presents two different tales of the European Union to provide an empirical challenge to oversimplified assumptions behind the neoliberal orthodoxy in policymaking: Favorable experience of the EU-candidate Turkey, and the regrettable venture of the EU-member Greece. The fact that these two neighboring countries with similar cultures have had vastly different experiences with the European Union suggests that the EU functions as a catalyst of change in the countries that associate with it, but this impact could be negative as well as positive depending on the role the EU plays. Political economist Bülent Temel presents a lucid analysis of the Turkish and Greek encounters with the EU—based on contributions from a diverse range of social sciences; economics, game theory, finance, political science and sociology.

It asks how the Korean electronics industry was able to develop, both in terms of production and technology, despite low inflows of licensing and foreign direct investments. The books argues that the key to its spectacular growth has been through its participation and learning from an inter-firm arrangement called original equipment manufacturing arrangement (OEM). A number of firm-level case studies on the Korean electronics industry support this argument. The role of the government, especially related to its technology policy, has also been analysed. The government was effective in providing financial incentives for the firms' technological upgrading efforts, but its supplying of direct technological assistance had limited success. More specifically, he determines whether differences in age structure can account for the observed differences in budget deficits across countries as well as across time. By way of an extension of the untested theory of negative bequest motives advocated by Cukierman and Meltzer (1989), the author argues that the commonly accepted notion that population aging tends to increase the budget deficits of economies is theoretically consistent. However, preliminary results from country and time fixed-effects panel regressions, estimated from 1975 to 1992 over 55 industrial and developing countries, indicate statistical evidence for this postulation is present only in the developing countries but not in the industrial countries. A concluding section examines the future role of China and the USA in East Asia, as well as the prospects for managing security in the region. The contributing authors are all experts in their respective fields, and all share an abiding concern over developments in East Asia. Their contributions aim to assist in a better understanding of the issues, to suggest possible solutions, and draw attention to the need for diplomacy, confidence-building measures, crisis management mechanisms and other measures to prevent conflict. Book excerpt: Global activity has broadly strengthened and is expected to improve further in 2014–15, according to the April 2014 WEO, with much of the impetus for growth coming from advanced economies. Although downside risks have diminished overall, lower-than-expected inflation poses risks for advanced economies, there is increased financial volatility in emerging market economies, and increases in the cost of capital will likely dampen investment and weigh on growth. Advanced economy policymakers need to avoid a premature withdrawal of monetary accommodation. Emerging market economy policymakers must adopt measures to changing fundamentals, facilitate external adjustment, further monetary policy tightening, and carry out structural reforms. The report includes a chapter that analyzes the causes of worldwide decreases in real interest rates since the 1980s and concludes that global rates can be expected to rise in the medium term, but only moderately. Another chapter examines factors behind the fluctuations in emerging market economies’ growth and concludes that strong growth in China played a key role in buffering the effects of the global financial crisis in these economies.
