Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 50th anniversary of the United Nations Organisation is commemorated in 1995. The UN emerged at the end of the most bloody war in the history of contemporary civilization and it is understandable that its founding fathers were concerned first and foremost with the need "to save succeeding gen erations from the scourge of war." This great historical mission of the new international organisation was determined and designed by the allied powers that had won the war against the "enemy states." Cooperation of the perma nent members of the UN Security Council was the basic element of the effi ciency of post -war system of international peace and security. Apart from this main mission, the founding fathers of the United Nations declared their determination "to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social prog ress and better standards of life in larger freedom" (preamble, UN Charter).

Book Justice Pending Indigenous Peoples and Other Good Causes

Download or read book Justice Pending Indigenous Peoples and Other Good Causes written by Gudmundur Alfredsson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume deal with many of the issues, which have been and continue to be on the international law and human rights agenda of Erica-Irene A. Daes. She is an international personality, with a long and varied career, but she has been and is passionately involved in a wide range of issues related directly or indirectly to the Greek experience and the Greek diaspora. The energy and output of Erica Daes culminated in her tireless efforts to seek protection for the world's indigenous peoples. It is in this capacity that the international human rights community has best learned to know and appreciate her. As an independent expert, she has served as Chairman of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations and she has carried out studies on indigenous land rights, intellectual and cultural rights, and indigenous heritage. She played a key role in bringing about an international year (1993) and a decade (1995-2004) for the promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples. Most importantly, Erica Daes was the principal drafter of the UN draft declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples, which has become known as the Daes Declaration and which is reproduced in an annex to this book. Other annexes contain excerpts from her documents prepared in the context of her UN career, some of which have not been previously published.

Download or read book Reproductive Freedom written by Maja Kirilova Eriksson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive investigation of reproductive freedom in the light of contemporary international law. The author discusses reproductive freedom in the context of feminist legal theory, international human rights and humanitarian law. This holistic approach makes the book unique and enhances its value as a comprehensive resource on the most challenging and contentious issues of our time, i.e., legal abortion, medically assisted reproduction, surrogate motherhood, forced pregnancy during armed conflicts, and many others. The author's aim is to advance current debates about gender equality and reproductive rights, and to deepen the analysis of the legal concepts involved. In surveying the international commitment to women's rights and examining critically the way in which international global and regional human rights bodies and ad hoc international tribunals deal with issues pertaining to reproductive freedom and sexual violence, this volume makes clear to what extent contemporary international law norms may be used as a tool for change, and how they need to be adapted to meet the special needs of girls and women worldwide. Finally, the book explores what improvements are necessary to prevent and protect adolescents, women and men, against violation of their reproductive freedom.
