Book Macroeconomic Challenges of Scaling Up Aid to Africa

Download or read book Macroeconomic Challenges of Scaling Up Aid to Africa written by Yongzheng Yang and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next decade, African countries are expected to be the largest beneficiaries of increased donor aid, which is intended to improve their prospects for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. This handbook will help these countries assess the macroeconomic implications of increased aid and respond to the associated policy challenges. The handbook is directed at policymakers, practicing economists in African countries, and the staffs of international financial institutions and donor agencies who participate in preparing medium-term strategies for African countries, including in the context of poverty reduction strategy papers. It provides five main guidelines for developing scaling-up scenarios to help countries identify important policy issues involved in using higher aid flows effectively: to absorb as much aid as possible, to boost growth in the short to medium term, to promote good governance and reduce corruption, to prepare an exit strategy should aid levels decrease, and to regularly reassess the policy mix.

Book Helping Africa Help Itself A Global Effort

Download or read book Helping Africa Help Itself A Global Effort written by Anup Shah and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of modern Africa struggles with poverty, famine, widespread disease, and violent conflict. The international community increasingly acknowledges the need to help Africa, and donor agencies and rich-nation governments have offered development assistance, food aid, and debt relief to the continent. But it is uncertain how effective this aid actually is, and how the world can best help African countries move toward self-sufficiency. Helping Africa Help Itself outlines various types of international aid and describes some of the organizations collecting and distributing it. The book explains such complex issues as debt relief, war crimes commissions, and Structural Adjustment Programs. Historical and political factors that have contributed to Africas present predicament are also examined.

Book The Future Of Western Development Assistance

Download or read book The Future Of Western Development Assistance written by Elliott R Morss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the inception of Western development assistance, significant changes in the makeup of donors, recipients, development goals, and strategies have taken place. However, major donor institutions have not yet weighed the impact of these changes on their operations and objectives in anticipation of the future global environment. Discussing trends that will profoundly affect development assistance strategy, the authors raise such questions as: Will the demand for Western technical assistance drop sharply over the next decade? Was the Latin American debt crisis precipitated by the loan practices of international commercial banks? Should aid to Africa be shifted from investment in rural desert areas to investment in urban planning and infrastructure? Also examined are such concerns as the outside management of agricultural research; the U.S. focus on purchasing political allegiance with its aid programs, thus creating dependent nations; the threat to East Asian economic growth posed by the micro-electronics revolution; and the growing conflict between western aid and trade objectives. The authors' purpose is not to provide definitive prescriptions for future development programs, but rather to focus the attention of policymakers on important, but often neglected, issues.

Book The Hollow Hope

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerald N. Rosenberg
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-09-15
  • ISBN : 0226726681
  • Pages : 541 pages

Download or read book The Hollow Hope written by Gerald N. Rosenberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In follow-up studies, dozens of reviews, and even a book of essays evaluating his conclusions, Gerald Rosenberg’s critics—not to mention his supporters—have spent nearly two decades debating the arguments he first put forward in The Hollow Hope. With this substantially expanded second edition of his landmark work, Rosenberg himself steps back into the fray, responding to criticism and adding chapters on the same-sex marriage battle that ask anew whether courts can spur political and social reform. Finding that the answer is still a resounding no, Rosenberg reaffirms his powerful contention that it’s nearly impossible to generate significant reforms through litigation. The reason? American courts are ineffective and relatively weak—far from the uniquely powerful sources for change they’re often portrayed as. Rosenberg supports this claim by documenting the direct and secondary effects of key court decisions—particularly Brown v. Board of Education and Roe v. Wade. He reveals, for example, that Congress, the White House, and a determined civil rights movement did far more than Brown to advance desegregation, while pro-choice activists invested too much in Roe at the expense of political mobilization. Further illuminating these cases, as well as the ongoing fight for same-sex marriage rights, Rosenberg also marshals impressive evidence to overturn the common assumption that even unsuccessful litigation can advance a cause by raising its profile. Directly addressing its critics in a new conclusion, The Hollow Hope, Second Edition promises to reignite for a new generation the national debate it sparked seventeen years ago.

Book The Developmental Effectiveness of Aid to Africa

Download or read book The Developmental Effectiveness of Aid to Africa written by Tony Killick and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aid to Sub-Saharan Africa has been less effective in promoting economic development than has aid to other regions. Policies in the recipient countries of Africa - though certainly not the only factor - play the most important role in determining aid's effectiveness. At the heart of the problem is politics, and the solution rests in the hands of the people of Africa.

Book United States Assistance Policy in Africa

Download or read book United States Assistance Policy in Africa written by Shai Divon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the end of WWII to the end of the Obama administration, development assistance in Africa has been viewed as an essential instrument of US foreign policy. Although many would characterise it as a form of aid aimed at enhancing the lives of those in the developing world, it can also be viewed as a tool for advancing US national security objectives. Using a theoretical framework based on 'power', United States Assistance Policy in Africa examines the American assistance discourse, its formation and justification in relation to historical contexts, and its operation on the African continent. Beginning with a problematisation of development as a concept that structures hierarchies between groups of people, the book highlights how cultural, political and economic conceptions influence the American assistance discourse. The book further highlights the relationship between American national security and its assistance policy in Africa during the Cold War, the post-Cold War, and the post-9/11 contexts. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Development Studies, Political Science and International Relations with particular interest in US foreign policy, USAID and/or African Studies.
