Download or read book More Important Than the Music written by Bruce D. Epperson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, jazz is considered high art, America’s national music, and the catalog of its recordings—its discography—is often taken for granted. But behind jazz discography is a fraught and highly colorful history of research, fanaticism, and the intense desire to know who played what, where, and when. This history gets its first full-length treatment in Bruce D. Epperson’s More Important Than the Music. Following the dedicated few who sought to keep jazz’s legacy organized, Epperson tells a fascinating story of archival pursuit in the face of negligence and deception, a tale that saw curses and threats regularly employed, with fisticuffs and lawsuits only slightly rarer. Epperson examines the documentation of recorded jazz from its casual origins as a novelty in the 1920s and ’30s, through the overwhelming deluge of 12-inch vinyl records in the middle of the twentieth century, to the use of computers by today’s discographers. Though he focuses much of his attention on comprehensive discographies, he also examines the development of a variety of related listings, such as buyer’s guides and library catalogs, and he closes with a look toward discography’s future. From the little black book to the full-featured online database, More Important Than the Music offers a history not just of jazz discography but of the profoundly human desire to preserve history itself.
Download or read book The Immediate Discography The First 20 Years written by Mark Jones and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of Best Discography in the 2017 Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) Awards for Excellence (Best Historical Research in Recorded Rock Music category). Immediate is bounded in time, a quaint time capsule synonymous with Swinging 60s London. Incorporation to insolvency was 5 five years but the reissues keep appearing 50 years on. Not surprising when you consider that the it was home to Small Faces, Nice, Rod Stewart, Humble Pie, Chris Farlowe, etc. Immediate was the 1st UK independent to score a number 1. This, perhaps, is one of the reasons that the label has such fervent admirers - 'the little bastard Immediate' stuck two fingers up at an oligopolistic industry that hadn't changed since before WW2. Without Immediate we might not have had Harvest, Vertigo, Nova or Dawn from the majors and we may not have seen further maverick-run independents, such as Charisma, Virgin or Stiff. Includes listings of all UK Immediate releases plus all known UK reissues up to 1985.

Download or read book The B C Discography 1968 to 1975 written by Mark Jones and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated and expanded second edition of this Award Nominated book (nominated for the 2014 ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research). Strictly limited edition of 50 copies in green jacket design. B&C started life as a distribution company, which was set up as a sister company to Island. Island's early success led B&C's owner, Lee Gopthal, to start releasing records in his own right. However, B&C's main strategy was based on licensing records rather than signing artists in its own right and many of B&C's labels concentrated on singles and budget compilation albums - strategies that set the seeds of the company's own destruction. The end, when it came in 1975 was probably inevitable. Still, whilst B&C was about, some very good music got released, almost despite itself on occasion. This book includes comprehensive discographies covering the Action, Stable, B&C, Charisma, Pegasus, Peg, People, Mooncrest, Dragon, Sussex and Seven Sun labels.
Download or read book Cross the Water Blues written by Neil A. Wynn and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions from Christopher G. Bakriges, Sean Creighton, Jeffrey Green, Leighton Grist, Bob Groom, Rainer E. Lotz, Paul Oliver, Catherine Parsonage, Iris Schmeisser, Roberta Freund Schwartz, Robert Springer, Rupert Till, Guido van Rijn, David Webster, Jen Wilson, and Neil A. Wynn This unique collection of essays examines the flow of African American music and musicians across the Atlantic to Europe from the time of slavery to the twentieth century. In a sweeping examination of different musical forms--spirituals, blues, jazz, skiffle, and orchestral music--the contributors consider the reception and influence of black music on a number of different European audiences, particularly in Britain, but also France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The essayists approach the subject through diverse historical, musicological, and philosophical perspectives. A number of essays document little-known performances and recordings of African American musicians in Europe. Several pieces, including one by Paul Oliver, focus on the appeal of the blues to British listeners. At the same time, these considerations often reveal the ambiguous nature of European responses to black music and in so doing add to our knowledge of transatlantic race relations.

Download or read book Giacomo Puccini written by Roger Flury and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera recordings have been with us since the creation of the first wax cylinders. Now at a time when the 25-year reign of the compact disc appears to be coming to an end is the moment to take stock of the history of recordings of arguably the most popular composer of operas, Giacomo Puccini. In Giacomo Puccini: A Discography, librarian and music historian Roger Flury looks at each opera chronologically from Le Villi to Turandot, followed by sections on Puccini's instrumental, chamber, orchestral, and solo vocal works. Details of each complete opera are listed by recording date, followed by excerpts in the order in which they occur in the opera. Recordings of each aria are listed alphabetically by the name of the artist. For ease of use, Flury establishes as the main criteria for inclusion those recordings assigned a commercial issue number and available for purchase. This book does not limit itself to mainstream recordings but includes as well 'unofficial' recordings taken from broadcasts or illegally recorded in theaters, ensuring that the audio recording history of Puccini is free of gaps. (Video and DVD issues, whether of staged performances or excerpts in concert, are not included unless they have been issued in a sound-only format.) This volume brings together information on nearly 10,000 recordings of Puccini's music. It provides a comprehensive overview of the recorded history of the composer's works and serves as a useful guide for the transfer of recordings from one format to another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was first published in 1993, the Sourcebook for Research in Music has become an invaluable resource in musical scholarship. The balance between depth of content and brevity of format makes it ideal for use as a textbook for students, a reference work for faculty and professional musicians, and as an aid for librarians. The introductory chapter includes a comprehensive list of bibliographical terms with definitions; bibliographic terms in German, French, and Italian; and the plan of the Library of Congress and the Dewey Decimal music classification systems. Integrating helpful commentary to instruct the reader on the scope and usefulness of specific items, this updated and expanded edition accounts for the rapid growth in new editions of standard works, in fields such as ethnomusicology, performance practice, women in music, popular music, education, business, and music technology. Download or read book The Ventures Essential Albums Discography written by Arnold E. van Beverhoudt, Jr. and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-07 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ventures are recognized as the most popular and successful instrumental rock and roll band in the world. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, the 50th anniversary of the band's formation by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle. This book offers my suggestions for what I consider to be an ""essential albums collection"" of The Ventures' music. I limited the listings to albums (LPs, EPs, and CDs) released in the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom that would provide a reasonably complete library of the almost 1,200 different songs recorded by The Ventures during their 55 years of existence to date (1959 to 2014). If you have all of these albums, you'll have virtually the entire recorded and officially-released library of The Ventures' music. Please note that this book contains album cover art, label information, and track list for each album listed. It does not include review commentary on the albums.
