In particular it describes the work within ISO TC92/SC4 which uses a sub-systems approach and permits a deterministic or probabilistic approach to design for fire safety in buildings. The paper concludes that a framework code is the cornerstone in gaining further acceptance of engineering approaches to Eire safety in buildings, and identifying topics and priorities for research needed to fill the gaps in current knowledge.
