Book Trends in Development Assistance to New Nenewable Energy in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Trends in Development Assistance to New Nenewable Energy in Sub Saharan Africa written by Rasmus Hundsbæk Pedersen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development assistance plays an important role in the development of energy sectors in sub-Saharan African countries and it is increasingly being used to promote new renewable energy like solar and wind. The relationship between aid and domestic African priorities is however complex and outcomes are not always as donors had intended. By way of collecting experiences from a number of different approaches in different African country contexts a new DIIS Working Paper analyses recent trends in development assistance for new renewable energy. Overall, the paper demonstrates a shift to promoting market-led approaches that aim at mobilising private capital for power-sector investments. Whereas more capital has indeed been mobilised for new renewable energy projects the paper suggests that more support is needed if a transition to cleaner energy and universal access to energy services are to be achieved. Furthermore, the promotion of market-led approaches poses not only opportunities, but also a number of challenges to governments and donors. Clean energy and decarbonisation are often less of a priority among key decision-makers in African countries than they are for western donors. The paper argues that it is important to recognise these different interests and to be realistic about how to bridge them. Furthermore, despite improvements in recent years the capacity to plan, procure and integrate renewable energy in power systems remains a challenge in many countries. This points to the importance of ensuring a balance between support for market development and support for capacity-building of government entities. Needs are likely to differ from one country to another and change as renewable technologies develop. The constant adaption of approaches is therefore crucial.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report responds to the Agency for International Development (A.I.D.) administrator's call for a critical reassessment of the Agency's experience with renewable energy. It describes today's climate for renewable energy technology in light of lower and unstable world oil prices, declining fuel-wood resources, and the present commercial status of various renewable technologies. General lessons learned in developing and applying renewable technology are also described, as well as priority applications and the appropriate role of the private sector. The report then sets out the proposed New Directions for A.I.D. renewable energy activities.

Book Renewable Energy

Download or read book Renewable Energy written by David Elliott and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant progress has been made by industrial countries to reduce emissions from the use of fossil fuels, but as the economies of the less-developed regions of the world begin to expand, they too will face similar challenges. This book looks at energy transitions being made in developing countries, focusing on the adoption of renewable energy systems in Africa, for example under the UN Sustainable Energy for All programme, but also by the EU in the Former Soviet countries of Eastern and Central Europe. It draws on experience from involvement with programmes in the EU and Africa and will be of great interest to academics, policy makers and practitioners in the development aid and renewable energy policy fields.
