Book Gamma Ray Burst and Afterglow Astronomy 2001

Download or read book Gamma Ray Burst and Afterglow Astronomy 2001 written by G.R. Ricker and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2003-05-08 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings contains the papers from both the poster and oral presentations presented at the Workshop celebrating the first year of the HETE mission. The HETE mission, launched on 9 October 2000, has dramatically quickened the pace of GRB discoveries. By disseminating accurate burst coordinates to the astronomical community within a minute of the burst onset, HETE has made possible the panchromatic observation of the early, bright phases of the relativistic fireball expansion in several GRB afterglows. The scientific program covered the rapidly expanding range of GRB research, with roughly half of the sessions being devoted to prompt burst emission, and half to burst afterglows, both from observational and theoretical perspectives. In particular, 26 papers presented in the section on the HETE Satellite Mission comprise both a tutorial on the spacecraft and its instruments, as well as a summary of early scientific results. In addition, special sessions, such as the session devoted to soft gamma repeaters, were devoted to future missions and instrumentation.

Book The New Cosmology

  • Author : Roland E. Allen
  • Publisher : American Institute of Physics
  • Release : 2004-12-14
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 476 pages

Download or read book The New Cosmology written by Roland E. Allen and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2004-12-14 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume examine the recent revolutionary discoveries in cosmology and astronomy, and their theoretical interpretation. The observational evidence for an accelerating universe, and an earlier decelerating phase, is brought up to date with the newest results for the most distant and oldest Type Ia supernovae. The data from the WMAP satellite provide, for the first time, true precision cosmology: reliable results for the age of the universe, its geometry, its evolution over the past 13.7 billion years, and many other features, including the proportions of ordinary matter, dark matter, and dark energy. Other papers in this volume describe the information obtained with 21st century astronomical techniques, including gravitational lensing, studies across the electromagnetic spectrum with ground-based and NASA observatories, and surveys of millions of galaxies. The results are interpreted by leading theorists using both accepted and exotic theories, including inflation and superstring theory.

  • ISBN : 9401012172
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Novae and Related Stars written by Yozo Yokota and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Friedjung Though known since antiquity, novae are still poorly under stood and present many problems. There has tended to be a lack of communication between theoreticians and observers and between different schools of thought, in spite of the advances of recent years in certain directions (observations of ordinary novae at minimum and of dwarf novae, theory of the causes of the explosion, etc ••• ). The meeting whose proceedings are contained in this volume was organized to stimulate a confron tation between the different ideas and results. The subject has changed a lot since 1963, when the previous international meeting was held. There were 61 participants at the conference from 17 countries, so very many groups ~oing research in the field of novae were represented. The reader will see that the subject has become more physical (we know for instance that the binary nature of novae is essential) but much work remains to be done. There is still a large gulf between theory and observation. May he find here many new ideas for future research! I would like to thank the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique for providing financial help. I must also thank the other members of the scientific committee (Profs and Drs Bath, Mustel, Payne-Gaposchkin, Sparks and Warner) and of the local committee (Audouze, Mrs Steinberg, Vauclair).

Book Models of Classical Novae with MESA

Download or read book Models of Classical Novae with MESA written by Oriol Abril Pla and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical novae are thermonuclear runaways at the envelope of a WD due to the piling up of H-rich accreted material. They have been observed to produce heavy elements during the explosion, and their role in galactical abundances for some specific elements may not be negligible. MESA (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) code has been thoroughly studied for its application to nova explosions. Detailed know-how of nova simulations with MESA has been achieved, leading the road of future studies using this tool. Its capablities in the field have been tested, demonstrating to reach further than what has been done in previous literature. MESA has been shown to give accurate nucleosynthesis yields for solar-like accreted material without any further postprocessing up to 50 nova bursts. The dependance of the nova outburst properties with the burst number have been anayzed. However, more simulations are needed in order to extract meaningful conclusions about the role of the burst number in the properties of novae outbursts. The key role of the nuclear reaction network has been highlighted, showing that simulations of consecutive novae outbursts require nuclear reactions networks specifically tested for the work. Many nuclear reaction networks that were thoroughly tested in a single nova explosion have not been capable of properly simulating 10 consecutive outbursts. The role of convective overshoot mixing as implemented in MESA has also been tested. It has been found that as shown in previous literature, it does account for dredge up. We plan to extend this work with simulations of consecutive nova outbursts implementing convective overshoot.

Book Supernova Explosions

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Branch
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2017-08-02
  • ISBN : 3662550547
  • Pages : 719 pages

Download or read book Supernova Explosions written by David Branch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targeting advanced students of astronomy and physics, as well as astronomers and physicists contemplating research on supernovae or related fields, David Branch and J. Craig Wheeler offer a modern account of the nature, causes and consequences of supernovae, as well as of issues that remain to be resolved. Owing especially to (1) the appearance of supernova 1987A in the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud, (2) the spectacularly successful use of supernovae as distance indicators for cosmology, (3) the association of some supernovae with the enigmatic cosmic gamma-ray bursts, and (4) the discovery of a class of superluminous supernovae, the pace of supernova research has been increasing sharply. This monograph serves as a broad survey of modern supernova research and a guide to the current literature. The book’s emphasis is on the explosive phases of supernovae. Part 1 is devoted to a survey of the kinds of observations that inform us about supernovae, some basic interpretations of such data, and an overview of the evolution of stars that brings them to an explosive endpoint. Part 2 goes into more detail on core-collapse and superluminous events: which kinds of stars produce them, and how do they do it? Part 3 is concerned with the stellar progenitors and explosion mechanisms of thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernovae. Part 4 is about consequences of supernovae and some applications to astrophysics and cosmology. References are provided in sufficient number to help the reader enter the literature.

Book RS Ophiuchi 1985 and the Recurrent Nova Phenomenon

Download or read book RS Ophiuchi 1985 and the Recurrent Nova Phenomenon written by M. F. Bode and published by VSP. This book was released on 1987-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international conference brought together over 50 astronomers from around the world. The meeting centred around a single object, the reccurent nova RS Ophiuchi, a star which had undergone four recorded outbursts before the latest event in 1985. Observations of previous outbursts (discussed in detail in one of the review talks) already indicated that RS Ophiuchi is a unique object of great astronomical significance. The outburst mechanism is probably similar to that of classical novae, but the interaction of the ejecta with a pre-existing shell of material give it the characteristics of a young supernova remnant. However, unlike supernova remnants, the evolution occurs 'before our very eyes'. Following the latest outburst, a frenzy of activity ensued, resulting in the acquisition of detailed observations from the radio (where rapidly expanding jets were discovered) to the X-ray (where RS Ophiuchi turned out to be one of the brightest soft X-ray sources yet observed). The Proceedings report the many exciting and unexpected observational results right across the electromagnetic spectrum in both RS Ophiuchi and related objects. Theoretical work on the cause of the outburst, and remnant evolution is also given prominence. The result is a much fuller understanding of RS Ophiuchi and its important standing in several branches of astrophysical research.
