Book Rethinking European Social Democracy and Socialism

Download or read book Rethinking European Social Democracy and Socialism written by Alan Granadino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a combined focus on social democrats in Northern and Southern Europe, this book crucially broadens our understanding of the transformation of European social democracy from the mid-1970s to the early-1990s. In doing so, it revisits the transformation of this ideological family at the end of the Cold War, and before the launch of Third Way politics, and examines the dynamics and power relations at play among European social democratic parties in a context of nascent globalisation. The chronological, methodological and geographical approaches adopted allow for a more nuanced narrative of change for European social democracy than the hitherto dominant centric perspective. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of social democracy, the European Centre-left, political parties, ideologies and more broadly to comparative politics and European politics and history.

Book Modern European Socialism

Download or read book Modern European Socialism written by Lawrence Wilde and published by Dartmouth Publishing Company. This book was released on 1994 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a future for socialism in Europe? The collapse of the communist dictatorships and the electoral reverses suffered by social democratic parties have called into question the whole historical project of challenging the power of capitalism. Modern European Socialism examines social democratic and communist responses to the immense changes which have occurred in the world economy since the collapse of the post-war boom. The power of global capital to dictate the conditions for investment has made it virtually impossible to promote egalitarian policies at the level of the nation state. However, Wilde argues that socialism can renew its relevance at a European level, if the process of economic integration culminates in a fully-fledged European state.

Book European Socialism and the Conflict in Central America

Download or read book European Socialism and the Conflict in Central America written by Eusebio Mujal-Leon and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crisis in Central America has afforded numerous transnational, regional, and extracontinental actors the opportunity to become involved in an area traditionally considered a reserve and special zone of influence for the United States. One notable example of this phenomenon has been the engagement of European Socialist and Social Democratic parties in the region. Their active involvement in Central American issues (and the opposition many of their leaders have expressed toward American policy in the region) has represented a significant departure for parties which have been broadly supportive of U.S. foreign policy initiatives and objectives since the late 1940s. The monograph analyzes the Central American policies and perspectives of the three European Socialist and Social Democratic parties--the Spanish PSOE, the French PS, and the West German SPD--which have been most active in the region. Chapter 1 explores the sources of European Socialist interest in Central America, seeking to place this concern in a historical context which takes into account developments both in Western Europe and in the international Social Democratic movement over the last two decades. Chapters 2 through 4 focus on the parties individually, providing case studies of the initiatives undertaken by the PSOE, PS, and SPD with respect to Central America. Each of these chapters places the Central American issue in the context of national foreign policy, assessing its relative importance and identifying those factions and personalities within each party who have shaped policy toward that region. The conclusion discusses the impact and significance of Europan Socialist engagement in Central America.

Book Social Democracy in the Global Periphery

Download or read book Social Democracy in the Global Periphery written by Richard Sandbrook and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Democracy in the Global Periphery focuses on social-democratic regimes in the developing world that have, to varying degrees, reconciled the needs of achieving growth through globalized markets with extensions of political, social and economic rights. The authors show that opportunities exist to achieve significant social progress, despite a global economic order that favours core industrial countries. Their findings derive from a comparative analysis of four exemplary cases: Kerala (India), Costa Rica, Mauritius and Chile (since 1990). Though unusual, the social and political conditions from which these developing-world social democracies arose are not unique; indeed, pragmatic and proactive social-democratic movements helped create these favourable conditions. The four exemplars have preserved or even improved their social achievements since neoliberalism emerged hegemonic in the 1980s. This demonstrates that certain social-democratic policies and practices - guided by a democratic developmental state - can enhance a national economy's global competitiveness.

Book Jean Jaur s

  • Author : Geoffrey Kurtz
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2015-06-10
  • ISBN : 0271065826
  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Jean Jaur s written by Geoffrey Kurtz and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Jaurès was a towering intellectual and political leader of the democratic Left at the turn of the twentieth century, but he is little remembered today outside of France, and his contributions to political thought are little studied anywhere. In Jean Jaurès: The Inner Life of Social Democracy, Geoffrey Kurtz introduces Jaurès to an American audience. The parliamentary and philosophical leader of French socialism from the 1890s until his assassination in 1914, Jaurès was the only major socialist leader of his generation who was educated as a political philosopher. As he championed the reformist method that would come to be called social democracy, he sought to understand the inner life of a political tradition that accepts its own imperfection. Jaurès's call to sustain the tension between the ideal and the real resonates today. In addition to recovering the questions asked by the first generation of social democrats, Kurtz’s aim in this book is to reconstruct Jaurès’s political thought in light of current theoretical and political debates. To achieve this, he gives readings of several of Jaurès’s major writings and speeches, spanning work from his early adulthood to the final years of his life, paying attention to not just what Jaurès is saying, but how he says it.

Book European Social Policy Today and Tomorrow

Download or read book European Social Policy Today and Tomorrow written by Michael Shanks and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Social Policy, Today and Tomorrow discusses the future of the European Community focusing on nine member-countries. The book discusses that if the members of the European Community were to survive and prosper, they should develop a viable social policy focusing on the problems and priorities of the common man. The text also explains the need for a clearer definition of the relative role of the member-states. The book describes the process leading to European integration and social policy, and compares the achievements that have resulted in terms of full, better employment together with improvement of living and working conditions. The text gives special attention to the employment situation and the inception of the European Social Fund, with an emphasis on the freedom of workers to move around the Community in search of better opportunities for themselves. A chapter also emphasizes the role of community participation and industrial democracy toward a meaningful process of shared decision-making. The book argues that the different social systems can be harmonized through the establishment of the First European Social Budget, which tracks date of expenditures covering health, sickness, unemployment, and occupation diseases. The selection then evaluates problems of poverty, health, environment, as well as inflation and social justice. The text evaluates as well the institutions that are established to address the problems. The book then proposes several changes toward a more responsive, evolving European Community. Diplomats, government policymakers, migrant workers, foreign career service officers, and historians will find this book thought-provoking and helpful.

However, considerable disagreement exists today about the future development of the European Union, particularly in relation to the speed and intensity of political integration, but also concerning the role to be played by Europe in the global political system. In this book, renowned European academics and politicians discuss the question of whether Europe should and can be a "Global Player." In particular, the following issues are raised: Has the EU reached the status of an economic "Global Player"? What are common European values, if any? Can Social Democracy be the European Model?
