Book Internal Migration in the Countries of Asia

Download or read book Internal Migration in the Countries of Asia written by Martin Bell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how population mobility varies among the countries of Asia. While much attention has been given to international migration, movement within countries is numerically much more significant. Coupling innovative methods developed in the global IMAGE project with the contextual knowledge of experts on 15 Asian countries, the book measures and explains how people across Asia differ in the probability of changing residence, the ages at which they move, and the impact of these migrations on the distribution of human settlement within each country. It demonstrates how stage of economic development, coupled with historical events, local contingencies, cultural norms, political frameworks, and the physical environment shape human migration. By using rigorous statistics in a robust comparative framework, this book provides a clear understanding of contemporary migration in Asia for students and academics, and a valuable resource for policy-makers and planners in Asia and beyond.

Book Return Migration in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Return Migration in the Asia Pacific written by Robyn R. Iredale and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'There are few studies on return migration in general and even fewer on migrants who have returned to their home countries in the Asian and Pacific region. Much is heard about "brain drain but much less about brain drain reversal. This book is to be welcomed as the first multi-country study to be published on the return of skilled and business migrants and the impact that they can have on their home economies in Asia and the Pacific. That impact is shown to be various and to change over time, the contributions clearly varying depending upon the nature of the environments to which the migrants have returned. The book presents valuable material from Bangladesh, China, Taiwan and Viet Nam, together with a contextual analysis of migrant communities from these economies in Australia.' - Ronald Skeldon, University of Sussex, UK Globalisation and social transformation theorists have paid significantly less attention to the movement of people than they have to the movement of capital. This book redresses the balance and provides timely insights into recent developments in return skilled migration in four regions in the Asia Pacific - Bangladesh, China, Taiwan and Vietnam. The authors believe that the movement of skilled migrants, and the tacit knowledge they bring with them, is a vital component in the process of globalisation.

Book Internal Migration and Structural Changes in the Labour Force

Download or read book Internal Migration and Structural Changes in the Labour Force written by United Nations. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was carried out as activities of a project on in-depth analysis of internal migration data for selected Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) countries, implemented by the ESCAP Population Division and the UN Population Fund. The research reported in this volume was conducted for the Republic of Korea and Thailand because both countries have published a special volume of migration tables based on their 1980 population and housing censuses. In addition, survey data on labor force status and occupation prior to and after migration to urban or rural areas were available for both countries. For at least the last 2 decades the population of the Republic of Korea has been exceptionally mobile, both in terms of residence and employment. During that time the structure of the economy has changed greatly, and internal migration has contributed disproportionately to that change. 62% of the increase in employed persons in urban areas between 1975 and 1980 was attributable to net in-migration. It may be fair to conclude that internal migration has permitted the rapid growth and restructuring of Korea's economy and that measures to slow it would probably be expensive and counter-productive. The growth of the urban labor force is primarily attributable to in-migration while decline in the rural labor force is not primarily due to out-migration as most migrants to urban areas are not in the labor force before migrating. Females typically experience greater labor force mobility than males, although at lower levels. 91% of the increase in female urban employment between 1975 and 1980 was attributable to net rural-urban migration. The Labour Force Surveys in Thailand reported that the urban labor force increased by 1.1 million persons between 1975 and 1980. Net migration accounted for 13% of this increase or 142,000 persons. The impact of migration on growth of the labor force varies greatly by occupation. About 44% of the growth in the number of service workers in urban areas was due to net migration. Females in Thailand have particularly high labor force participation and migration rates relative to males. A major policy recommendation resulting from this study is that employment opportunities be dispersed from Bangkok Metropolis to other municipal and non-municipal areas.

Book Rural Urban Migration and Policy Intervention in China

Download or read book Rural Urban Migration and Policy Intervention in China written by Li Sun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines rural-urban migration policies in China, and considers how Chinese workers cope with migration events in the context of these policies. It explores the contribution of migrant workers to the Chinese economy, the impact of changes within the ‘hukou’ system (household registration) and the impact of recent migration policies promoting rural-urban migration and targeting key events during migrant workers’ migration trajectories - job-seeking, wage exploitation, work injuries and illness - namely the corresponding ‘Skills Training Program for Migrant Workers’, the ‘Circular on Managing Wage Payment to Migrant Workers’, the ‘Circular on Migrant Workers Participating in Work-Related Injury Insurance’, and the ‘New Rural Medical Cooperative Scheme’ (Health Insurance). Through in-depth interviews, it examines how when facing such challenges, migrant workers choose to either make a claim under existing policies, or use other coping strategies. The book notably proposes a typology of “coping” which includes a variety of administrative coping, political coping and social coping, and considers how workers in China harness the power of civil groups and social networks.
