Book Intermediate Physics Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intermediate Physics When arranging a course Of instruction for intermediate students, most Of whom willinot proceed _with the study Of Physics beyond this stage, one is met with the di iculty that the range Of subjects which may be dealt with is so great. This diculty is continually increasing since the applications of physical principles to engineering and the like are con tinually being extended, as for example in the case Of wireless-telegraphy, and at the same time new branches Of Physics, such as radio-activity, are being developed. In either case the student rightly expects that even in an intermediate course such subjects should not be ignored. The result of such extensions is that the teacher has either to attempt to cover all the ground, and hence owing to limitations Of time can only deal very superficially with the various subjects, or he has to limit the number Of subjects which he will consider. The author believes that this latter alternative is the better one, and that a considerable number Of the simpler physical phenomena which it has been usual to include in an intermediate course can with advantage be omitted, or at any rate dealt with very briefly; the time thus saved being employed in examining a little more in detail some Of the other branches. In this book he has attempted to carry out this idea, so that although it will be found that the number of physical phenomena considered is not quite as large as is Often the case in works Of a similar scope, yet some branches are carried a little beyond what is generally considered the intermediate stage. In selecting the parts to be extended in this way the author has had in View the requirements Of engineering, medical and other students, who will, to a certain extent, have to apply physical principles in their subsequent studies. He feels that in this way the gap which at present is apt to exist between the course in Physics taken, say, by an engineering student, and the applications Of physical principles he meets with in his engineering reading will be reduced, and at the same time the interest of the student will be better maintained than when he is introduced to a large mass of physical phenomena which, when only examined in a very elementary manner, must appear more or less disconnected. The pages on mechanics do not profess to give a complete account Of the subject, only those problems being included which are required when dealing with the more physical problems considered in the main part of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Intermediate Course of Practical Physics The term Intermediate in the title of the book, has been used to indicate that its standard is higher than that of the Elementary Text Books; but it is by no means essential that students should have worked through an elementary book in order to perform the exercises described in this volume. The book is in the main, a reprint of the papers of instructions which have been issued to the students of the Owens College during the last five years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physics: Advanced Course The author's aim has been to avoid making the book simply an encyclopedic collection of facts on the one hand, or too purely an abstract and theoretical discus sion of physical theories on the other. The ground covered is that which is usually traversed by students in the more extended courses in Physics in our leading Universities, Colleges, and Technological Institutes. The mathematics required in the derivation of the for mulas is only that with which students taking such courses may be presumed to be already acquainted. Obviously, however, these derivations can be omitted at the discretion of the instructor. To facilitate the use of the book in the classroom most of the illustrative and explanatory matter is printed in a smaller type. Book A College Text Book of Physics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A College Text Book of Physics Classic Reprint written by Arthur L. Kimball and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Physics In offering this work to my fellow teachers, a word of explana tion is due. The book was undertaken some years ago when the writer felt the want of a text-book adapted to the needs of students taking the general first year course in college. As the work has slowly progressed several text-books of very similar aim have appeared, and it must be admitted that the call is not so impera tive now as formerly; and yet it is hoped that the treatment here presented may meet some still existing demand and so justify its existence. What may be called the physical rather than the mathematical method has been preferred in giving definitions and explana tions, because it is believed that the ideas presented are more easily grasped and more tenaciously held when the mind forms for itself a sort of picture of the conditions, instead of merely associating them with the symbols of a formula. There are many minds that do not easily grasp mathematical reasoning even of a simple sort; and it is often the case also that a student who may be able to follow an algebraic deduction step by step has very little idea of the significance of the whole when he reaches the end. Algebra is not his native tongue and it takes considerable time and experience for him to learn to think in it. And while all will agree that for the more advanced study of physics, mathematics is quite indispensable, many will grant that in a general course, which is to furnish to most of those taking it all that they will ever know of physics as a science, the ideas and reasonings should be presented as directly as possible and in the most simple and familiar terms. This then has been the central aim in the preparation of this book; to give the student clear and distinct conceptions Of the various ideas and phenomena of physics, and to aid him in think ing through the relations between them, to the end that he may see something of the underlying unity of the subject; and to carry out this aim in such a manner that students may not be repelled by any unnecessary prominence of symbolic methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Intermediate Course of Mechanics OF all the phenomena of Nature the most direct and most universal are concerned with the motions of bodies. Stones fall, rivers flow, the stars circle in the sky. We ourselves move from place to place, ' and set other things in motion or keep them at rest. What are the conditions under which motion takes place? We can give various more or less vague answers to this question. It is the business of the Science of Mechanics to find out what these conditions are, and express them in definite (le. Scientific) language. The language that is employed is to a large extent the language of Mathematics. Mechanics is therefore often regarded as a branch of Mathematics, and is called Applied Mathematics. But the phenomena which are described are indeed merely the most universal of the phenomena of Nature common to both animate and inanimate things; and the. Book The Ontario High School Physics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ontario High School Physics Classic Reprint written by F. W. Merchant and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ontario High School Physics In the printing of this book two sizes of type have been mainly used. The portion printed in large type( 1 for example) is intended to cover the course in Physics at present prescribed for the classes of the Middle School. The sections in smaller type( 24 for example) have been included in order to render the treatment of the subject more complete. In dealing with the various branches of the subject an attempt has been made to illustrate its principles and laws by reference to numerous applications in ordinary life. Other illustrations are taken from the chief applications of Physics to industry and commerce, especially those to be seen in our own country. Practical questions and problems are proposed in connection with important topics in the text. The materials for these exercises have been selected with the purpose, not only of illustrating and applying the principles discussed, but also of stimulating the interest of the student in the physical phenomena with which he is familiar. Attention is directed to the diagrams and other drawings, of which there is an exceptionally large number. These have all been prepared especially for this work, and great pains have been taken to have them clear and easily understood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior Grade Science: An Introductory Course of Physics and Chemistry for Irish Intermediate Schools IN the compilation of this book the object has been to provide in convenient form a course in Physics and Chemistry suitable for use in connection with the new syllabus prescribed for Junior Grade students by the-department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland. It is interesting to note, in connection with the new Irish syllabuses in science, that they anticipate by about a year the conclusions of Sir J. J. Thomson's Committee appointed to enquire into the Position of Natural Science in the Educational System of Great Britain. The report states that A general course in science should fulfil two functions; (a) it should train the mind of the student to reason about things he has observed for himself and develop his powers of weighing and interpreting evidence; (b) it should also make him acquainted with the broad outlines of great scientific principles, with the way in which these principles are exemplified in familiar phenomena and with their applications to the service of man. Further, the report points out that the time allotted to the study of science, even if on the most liberal scale, does not permit the various branches of science to receive the detailed treatment possible where only one or two branches are attempted. There must necessarily be great gaps in the student's knowledge of these branches, but in the general course we think these should be distributed, rather than that one or more of these branches should escape consideration altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Examples in Physics Degree courses in Physics at Leeds University in setting numerical examples of a fairly advanced type, and I doubt not that the. Same difficulty will have been felt elsewhere. N 0 teacher can afford to dispense with so important a test of the progress of his students as the working of calculations 'based on the subject-matter of the lectures; yet there appears to be no collection of suitable exercises published at a moderate price. The dictation of questions to a class absorbs valuable time, and the handing round of loose leaflets is a troublesome process. Moreover the large number of students working privately for the examinations of London University must find themselves at a great disadvantage if, as often happens, they have not easy access to a set of University Calendars. This book is designed to meet the difficulty referred to; most of the questions are taken from old examination-papers, the source being acknowledged by a letter in brackets at the end of each exercise. The London and Victoria Universities are indicated by the letters L. And V. Respectively; H. Denotes that the paper was one for Honours candidates. When no letter is added, the question is either original or has been taken from the lecture note-books in use at Leeds; for permission to use the latter I am greatly indebted to Professor Stroud. Questions taken from old papers have as a rule been reproduced in their original form even when improvement seemed possible; the detection of such cases is in itself a useful exercise. Book Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems

Download or read book Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems written by Jerry B. Marion and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems presents a modern and reasonably complete account of the classical mechanics of particles, systems of particles, and rigid bodies for physics students at the advanced undergraduate level. The book aims to present a modern treatment of classical mechanical systems in such a way that the transition to the quantum theory of physics can be made with the least possible difficulty; to acquaint the student with new mathematical techniques and provide sufficient practice in solving problems; and to impart to the student some degree of sophistication in handling both the formalism of the theory and the operational technique of problem solving. Vector methods are developed in the first two chapters and are used throughout the book. Other chapters cover the fundamentals of Newtonian mechanics, the special theory of relativity, gravitational attraction and potentials, oscillatory motion, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, central-force motion, two-particle collisions, and the wave equation.
