Die Darstellung der Geschichte der interkulturellen Bildung beginnt hier nicht erst in den 1960er Jahren, sondern schließt das 19. und frühe 20. Jahrhundert unter der Frage nach dem Umgang mit dem 'Fremden' und dem 'Eigenen' in Bildungspolitik und Pädagogik ein. Damit wird sichtbar, in welcher Tradition die Interkulturelle Pädagogik als Fachrichtung ebenso wie die aktuell geltenden bildungspolitischen und -rechtlichen Regelungen für die verschiedenen Zuwanderergruppen stehen. Ein Kapitel ist speziell terminologischen Fragen und weiteren Problemen gewidmet, die bei der Erschließung von Texten und Materialien und bei der Gestaltung eigener Texte eine Rolle spielen. Zur Unterstützung der eigenständigen Arbeit sind jedem Kapitel Aufgaben beigefügt; Lösungshinweise sind im Anhang beigegeben. Den Abschluss bildet ein Service-Kapitel zur leichteren Orientierung in der Fachliteratur. Entries have been classified under the following main headings: -- migration processes -- education of migrants -- social and linguistic status of new ethnic communities. The main emphasis of the compilers in making the selection is on the consequences of cultural pluralisation for the various education systems involved, so that not only is the education of migrants and their families covered but the effects of intercultural education for all pupils is also taken into account. Integrative religious education refers to education about different religions in classrooms with children of various religious and non-religious backgrounds. Cornerstones of recent debates about theory and methodology in the academic study of religions and in education are discussed in the first chapter. They form the basis of the following analysis and evaluation of current approaches to integrative religious education in Europe, with a special focus on England and Sweden. Particular attention is paid to the different underlying concepts of religion, education and ways of representing religious plurality in these approaches. Building on a discussion of the current situation of teaching and learning about religions in schools in Europe in the context of wider cultural, social and political debates, the book concludes with the suggestion of a framework for integrative religious education in Europe, from a perspective that combines insights from the study of religions and education.

Book excerpt: This third volume of ASNEL Papers covers a wide range of theoretical and thematic approaches to the subject of intertextuality. Intertextual relations between oral and written versions of literature, text and performance, as well as problems emerging from media transitions, regionally instructed forms of intertextuality, and the works of individual authors are equally dealt with. Intertextuality as both a creative and a critical practice frequently exposes the essential arbitrariness of literary and cultural manifestations that have become canonized. The transformation and transfer of meanings which accompanies any crossing between texts rests not least on the nature of the artistic corpus embodied in the general framework of historically and socially determined cultural traditions. Traditions, however, result from selective forms of perception; they are as much inventions as they are based on exclusion. Intertextuality leads to a constant reinforcement of tradition, while, at the same time, intertextual relations between the new literatures and other English-language literatures are all too obvious. Despite the inevitable impact of tradition, the new literatures tend to employ a dynamic reading of culture which fosters social process and transition, thus promoting transcultural rather than intercultural modes of communication. Writing and reading across borders becomes a dialogue which reveals both differences and similarities. More than a decolonizing form of deconstruction, intertextuality is a strategy for communicating meaning across cultural boundaries.

Book excerpt: This book examines the right to education for migrant children in Europe between 1949 and 1992. Using West Germany as a case study to explore European trends, the book analyzes how the Council of Europe and European Community’s ideological goals were implemented for specific national groups. The book starts with education for displaced persons and exiles in the 1950s, then compares schooling for Italian, Greek, and Turkish labor migrants, then circles back to asylum seekers and returning ethnic Germans. For each group, the state entries involved tried to balance equal education opportunities with the right to personhood, an effort which became particularly convoluted due to implicit biases. When the European Union was founded in 1993, children’s access to education depended on a complicated mix of legal status and perception of cultural compatibility. Despite claims that all children should have equal opportunities, children’s access was limited by citizenship and ethnic identity.
