Book Interior and Northern Alaska

Download or read book Interior and Northern Alaska written by Ronald L. Smith and published by Danforth Book Distribution. This book was released on 2008 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did these creatures manage to survive the extremes of Alaska's environment? How were the Alaskan dinosaurs different from their counterparts elsewhere in the world? How have present-day animals and plants adapted to the harsh winters? Open up Ron Smith's world and learn that the answer is not just in what these creatures are - their size or what color or type of skin covering - but also in what they do. Smith highlights the most interesting of Alaska's residents - the towering grizzly as well as the petite pika, the "coat-changing" ptarmigan and the ever-popular salmon - to reveal nature at its amazing best. This insatiably curious scientist asks questions we'd never think of to discover the wonder of this wild land. How can a ponderously slow-growing evergreen ever hope to survive when it's surrounded by the rapidly growing deciduous trees? Building upon the discoveries of Alaska's extinct dinosaurs and plants and the interrelationship of current species, Smith looks to the futu

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book Thorson and his colleagues in other scientific disciplines, each with a personal commitment to the Great Land, interpret past performances in its geologic and human history and put them into everyday perspective, in everyday terms. We see the oceans rising and falling, the Great Ice Sheet advancing and retreating, mountain ranges building and crumbling, monster mammals roaming the land as vegetation grows and spreads, human beings crossing the Bering Land Bridge to populate the New World. It's science-fact more gripping than science-fiction, a beautiful story, sure to capture the imagination and add to the understanding of the powers at work on Planet Earth"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Alaska s Changing Boreal Forest

Download or read book Alaska s Changing Boreal Forest written by F. Stuart Chapin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boreal forest is the northern-most woodland biome, whose natural history is rooted in the influence of low temperature and high-latitude. Alaska's boreal forest is now warming as rapidly as the rest of Earth, providing an unprecedented look at how this cold-adapted, fire-prone forest adjusts to change. This volume synthesizes current understanding of the ecology of Alaska's boreal forests and describes their unique features in the context of circumpolar and global patterns. It tells how fire and climate contributed to the biome's current dynamics. As climate warms and permafrost (permanently frozen ground) thaws, the boreal forest may be on the cusp of a major change in state. The editors have gathered a remarkable set of contributors to discuss this swift environmental and biotic transformation. Their chapters cover the properties of the forest, the changes it is undergoing, and the challenges these alterations present to boreal forest managers. In the first section, the reader can absorb the geographic and historical context for understanding the boreal forest. The book then delves into the dynamics of plant and animal communities inhabiting this forest, and the biogeochemical processes that link these organisms. In the last section the authors explore landscape phenomena that operate at larger temporal and spatial scales and integrates the processes described in earlier sections. Much of the research on which this book is based results from the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research Program. Here is a synthesis of the substantial literature on Alaska's boreal forest that should be accessible to professional ecologists, students, and the interested public.

Join Fairbanks artist and writer, Ray Bonnell, in the third book of his "Interior Sketches" series as he visits additional historic sites. Explore locations like World War II-era Ladd Field in Fairbanks, and a 1910-era roadhouse and telegraph station at McCallum Creek along the Richardson Highway; and revisit the historic 1915 Tanana Chiefs Conference held in Fairbanks. For almost 40 years Ray has tramped the roads and trails of Eastern Interior Alaska, searching out old mining camps, roadhouses, homesteads, villages, and other historic locations. Through his historical essays and detailed pen-&-ink drawings he takes "snapshots in time" of these historic sites before time, development and vandalism erase them from the landscape. His first two Interior Sketches books each showcase 61 historic sites. In this third book 70 more sites are featured. Each entry includes an essay and a reproduction of one of Ray's pen-&-ink drawings. Sites included were selected from Ray's award-winning newspaper column, "Sketches of Alaska." All of the sites are on or near the road system, so you can drive or walk to most of them, and a hand-drawn map of Eastern Interior Alaska showing the general location of sites is reproduced in the book.
