Book excerpt: To cope with the ever-increasing cellular traffic demand, the heterogeneous network is introduced to densify the cells for places where that is most needed. However, heterogeneous deployment with a mixture of base-stations of different capabilities also imposes great challenges for inter-cell interference management. In Long-Term Evolution (LTE) systems, for example, radio resources can be shared in time, frequency and spatial domain, providing us with the flexibility for interference avoidance or suppression. But finding a near-optimal solution in such a complex system can be extremely difficult, if not impossible, with reasonable computational complexity. In this dissertation, we tackle the interference management in heterogeneous cellular networks under different system constraints, application scenarios and/or with different kinds of quality-of-service (QoS) metrics. In this context, we investigate four major problems. In the first problem, we address the throughput optimization with shared resources of macro and femto cells. Since the femto base-stations can be operated in closed mode implying that only a specific group of users have access to its service, significant downlink interference can be incurred to a nearby macro user equipment (MUE) with poor resource management. We proposed a stochastic approximation based scheme by allowing feedback in the macro-tier to be overheard by the femto tier without explicitly estimating the cross-tier channel gains. In the second problem, we model the network as a queueing system with dynamically generated traffic. For less delay-sensitive traffic, we can control the power for each resource element to maximize the average throughput given the constraint that the backlog for the macro-cell queue is not unbounded. Using Lyapunov drift analysis, we provide both a centralized and a distributed solution for femtocell power control utilizing macrocell queue length information. In the third problem, we further incorporate fairness into our consideration. To achieve better fairness than that obtained by purely optimizing total throughput, we provide a joint power control and resource allocation scheme to minimize the maximal outage probability constrained on macrocell user equipments' outage requirements. This ensures better interference management by providing uniform user experience for all femtocell users. In the last topic, we treat different nodes as agents participating in a game either independently or in a coordinated way. In a pure non-cooperative game, each base station maximizes its own profit in the form of sum throughput towards all users associated with it. The spectrum efficiency can be much improved with careful design and signal passing across nodes. When each base station has private information, the optimization problem is essentially an auction game. When a centralized powerful entity exists as for the case of a cloud-based radio access network (C-RAN), radio resources can be managed in a semi-centralized way with each node bidding for the services. Using this model, we provide different schemes to achieve joint user association and resource management considering the trade-off between complexity and performance.

The limitations of this approach are evaluated and depending on the surrounding base stations two solutions are proposed and discussed.

By bringing base stations (BSs) to the approximate spatial scale and number magnitude, ultra-dense heterogeneous networks would definitely bring unprecedented paradigm changes to the network design. Firstly, along with densification of small cells, inter-cell interference becomes severe and may deteriorate performance of mobile users. Assigning network resources including bandwidth and time slots, while avoiding interference, desires serious consideration. Secondly, the coverage area of BSs becomes small and irregular, resulting in much frequent and complicated handovers when mobile users move around. How to ensure continuous communication and implement effective mobility management, and inter-cell resource allocation and cooperation, remains a challenging issue. Thirdly, such dynamic change in spatial dimension enables us to re-investigate available and ongoing communications and networking techniques, such as massive MIMO, CoMP, millimeter waves (mmWaves), carrier aggregation, full duplex radio, and D2D communications. To address the aforementioned challenging research issues, this book will investigate the service and QoE provisioning in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks. In particular, firstly we introduce ultra-dense heterogeneous networks by careful definition regarding spatial deployment, generic characteristics, and requirements of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks in order to ensure QoE of mobile users. Secondly, we depict the resource management among small cells in close proximity, mobility management for mobile users (address the super-frequent handovers), and interference management (dealing with the interference due to frequency-reuse in the vicinity). Thirdly, we study the enabling factors, and the integration of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks with enabling technologies, such as massive-MIMO, cloud-RAN, mmWaves, D2D, IoT. Book excerpt: Cellular wireless data traffic is now growing at about 80% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), and hence creating a corresponding demand for additional capacity. This traffic growth in the developed world comes mainly from the increasing use of video file transfers or viewings. In the emerging countries, the increasing smart-phone penetration is an additional factor. The demand for capacity can be met by more spectrum, higher spectrum efficiency, and a greater number of cells. However, increasing spectrum and spectrum efficiency has proved to be slow because of both regulatory and technological barriers. Therefore, increasing the number of cells is an effective way to add capacity. Because of the diverse types of mobile data, the use of different tiers of cells has become necessary: high-power and high-capacity large macro cells to serve vehicle based users, medium-power and medium-capacity small pico cells for outdoor pedestrian users, and very low-power and low-capacity femto cells for indoor users. These cells often work together and are known as a heterogeneous network. The cells in a heterogeneous network often share the limited spectrum available to the operator. They reuse the spectrum across tiers as well as within the same tier. This inter-tier reuse creates interference, e.g., femto to macro interference. In addition, intra-tier interference arises from frequency reuse within a tier, e.g., femto to femto interference. Managing interference in heterogeneous networks is hence complex compared to the interference management of earlier single-tier macro cell networks, which is well understood. The research presented in this dissertation studied two interference management problems: inter-tier interference management between a macro cell and a femto cell, and intra-tier interference among femto cells. Chapter 2 presents the downlink femto-macro inter-tier interference management problem. This chapter proposes a cost criteria of maximizing the minimum (worst-case) rate of femto users while constraining the worst-case performance degradation of macro cell users caused by interference from the femto base station. Analysis shows that a combination of frequency (resource-block) allocation for femto users and power control of each resource block can lead to good results. Because the general joint resource block-allocation and power-control problem is very complex (NP-hard), a suboptimal method is developed using a decoupled resource allocation and power control. All these solutions were also verified by simulations. An analytical solution for the single femto user case also appears. Chapter 3 presents the management of downlink intra-tier interference in an enterprise femto network with multiple femto base stations. This chapter discusses admission of users to receive service, allocation of users to femto base stations, and the downlink power control to maximize the service rate while maintaining the QoS criteria, which specifies the worst-case 95th percentile download time of a file. The analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by simulation and also discusses naive (baseline) scheduling, which does not manage intra-tier interference, that leads to poor throughput as the density of femto cells increase. Last, this chapter explores a flexible user-base station association approach wherein the base station associated with a given user can be dynamically changed during a download period at network events. Such flexibility adds a significant performance improvement. Chapter 4 concludes the thesis by summarizing the results, discussing the limitations of the work presented, and making suggestions for future research.
