Book U S Geological Survey Subsidence Interest Group Conference

Download or read book U S Geological Survey Subsidence Interest Group Conference written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land subsidence is the loss of surface elevation as a result of the removal of subsurface support. The mechanisms by which this can occur may be natural in origin or induced by human activities. Common causes of land subsidence include the removal of oil, gas, and water from underground reservoirs; dissolution of limestone aquifers (sinkholes); underground mining activities; drainage of organic soils; and hydrocompaction (the initial wetting of dry soils). Overdraft of aquifers is the major cause of a really extensive land subsidence, and as ground-water pumping increases, land subsidence also will increase. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has a long-standing history of describing, mapping, and conducting process-oriented research in land subsidence. In 1955, the Geological Survey formed the Mechanics of Aquifers Project under the direction of Joseph F. Poland to study the processes that result in land subsidence due to the withdrawal of ground water. From 1955 to 1984, this research team gained international renown as they advanced the understanding of aquifer mechanics and land-subsidence theory. In addition to conducting pioneering research, this group also provided a focal point within the USGS for the dissemination of technology and scientific understanding in aquifer mechanics.

Book Interest Groups in American Politics

Download or read book Interest Groups in American Politics written by Anthony J. Nownes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans rail against so-called special interests but at the same time many members of society are themselves represented in one form or another by organized groups trying to affect the policymaking progress. This concise but thorough text demonstrates that interest groups are involved in the political system at all levels of government – federal, state, and local – and in all aspects of political activity, from election campaigns to agenda setting to lawmaking to policy implementation. Rather than an anomaly or distortion of the political system, it is a normal and healthy function of a pluralist society and democratic governance. Nonetheless, Nownes warns of the dangers of unwatched interest group activity, especially in the realms of the electoral process and issue advocacy. Interest Groups in American Politics, Second Edition, is grounded by the role of information in interest group activity, a theme that runs through the entire book. This much anticipated revision of Nownes’s text retains a student friendly tone and thoroughly updates the references to interest group research, as well as adds a new chapter on the connections between interest groups and political parties. Numerous figures and tables throughout the book help students visualize important trends and information.

Book Peremptory Norms of General International Law Jus Cogens and the Prohibition of Terrorism

This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 ASIL Lieber prize! In Peremptory Norms of International Law and Terrorism (Jus Cogens) and the Prohibition of Terrorism, Aniel de Beer analyses the role of these norms (jus cogens norms) in the fight against terrorism. Jus cogens norms protect fundamental values of the international community, are hierarchically superior and non-derogable. The author argues, based on an analysis of the sources of international law, that the prohibition of terrorism has become the jus cogens norm of our time. She further considers the impact of the status of the prohibition of terrorism as a jus cogens norm on other norms of international law relevant in the fight against terrorism, namely the prohibition of torture, the right to a fair trial and the prohibition of the inter-state use of force.

Book Gender and the Law of the Sea

Download or read book Gender and the Law of the Sea written by Irini Papanicolopulu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listen to the podcast with Nilufer Oral on 'Climate Change, Oceans and Gender' In Gender and the Law of the Sea a distinguished group of law of the sea and feminist scholars critically engages with one of the oldest fields of international law. While the law of the sea has been traditionally portrayed as a technical, gender-neutral set of rules, of concern to States rather than humans, authors in this volume persuasively argue that critical feminist perspectives are needed to question the underlying assumptions of ostensibly gender-neutral norms. Coming at a time when the presence of women at sea is increasing, the volume forcefully and successfully argues that legal rules are relevant to ensure gender equality and the empowerment of women at sea, in an effort to render law for the oceans more inclusive.
