Book Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections

Download or read book Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections written by Keqin Li and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-26 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in optical technologies have made it possible to implement optical interconnections in future massively parallel processing systems. Photons are non-charged particles, and do not naturally interact. Consequently, there are many desirable characteristics of optical interconnects, e.g. high speed (speed of light), increased fanout, high bandwidth, high reliability, longer interconnection lengths, low power requirements, and immunity to EMI with reduced crosstalk. Optics can utilize free-space interconnects as well as guided wave technology, neither of which has the problems of VLSI technology mentioned above. Optical interconnections can be built at various levels, providing chip-to-chip, module-to-module, board-to-board, and node-to-node communications. Massively parallel processing using optical interconnections poses new challenges; new system configurations need to be designed, scheduling and data communication schemes based on new resource metrics need to be investigated, algorithms for a wide variety of applications need to be developed under the novel computation models that optical interconnections permit, and so on. Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections is a collection of survey articles written by leading and active scientists in the area of parallel computing using optical interconnections. This is the first book which provides current and comprehensive coverage of the field, reflects the state of the art from high-level architecture design and algorithmic points of view, and points out directions for further research and development.

Book Study and Design of Parallel Algorithms for Interconnection Networks

Download or read book Study and Design of Parallel Algorithms for Interconnection Networks written by Sudhanshu K. Jha and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel processing has proven its significant role in various large scale scientific and engineering areas including weather forecasting, air traffic control, petroleum exploration, bio-medical, nuclear energy and defence. Very fast computations of a massive volume of data are an urgent need to support all such real time and real life applications. The computations involved in such applications usually follow some numeric and non-numeric algorithms which are inherently slow to run in a sequential machine. Designing efficient parallel algorithms for such computations have thus been an important area of research in which an interconnection network plays a central role. In this book, we study various interconnection networks and develop efficient parallel algorithms for several problems that include balanced ring formation for the fault tolerance, parallel prefix computation, shortest path routing and matrix multiplication. We present all these algorithms on popular interconnection networks namely, 2D-mesh, OTIS-mesh, OTIS-torus and multi-mesh of trees network. The parallel algorithms are analyzed by their time complexity and cost.

Book Distributed Computing for Signal Processing Modeling of Asynchronous Parallel Computation Appendix C Fault Tolerant Interconnection Networks and Image Processing Applications for the PASM Parallel Processing Systems

Download or read book Distributed Computing for Signal Processing Modeling of Asynchronous Parallel Computation Appendix C Fault Tolerant Interconnection Networks and Image Processing Applications for the PASM Parallel Processing Systems written by George B Adams (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for very high speed data processing coupled with falling hardware costs has made large-scale parallel and distributed computer systems both desirable and feasible. Two modes of parallel processing are single instruction stream-multiple data stream (SIMD) and multiple instruction stream - multiple data stream (MIMD). PASM, a partitionable SIMD/MIMD system, is a reconfigurable multimicroprocessor system being designed for image processing and pattern recognition. An important component of these systems is the interconnection network, the mechanism for communication among the computation nodes and memories. Assuring high reliability for such complex systems is a significant task. Thus, a crucial practical aspect of an interconnection network is fault tolerance. In answer to this need, the Extra Stage Cube (ESC), a fault-tolerant, multistage cube-type interconnection network, is defined. The fault tolerance of the ESC is explored for both single and multiple faults, routing tags are defined, and consideration is given to permuting data and partitioning the ESC in the presence of faults. The ESC is compared with other fault-tolerant multistage networks. Finally, reliability of the ESC and an enhanced version of it are investigated. Keywords: Theses.

Book excerpt: Recent innovation in the field of Very Large Scale Integration has resulted into fabrication of high speed processors. The sequential computers, equipped with such high speed processors, are unable to meet the challenges of various real-life and real- time computational problems in the areas of image processing, climate modeling, remote sensing, medical science etc., that require to process massive volume of data. Parallel processing is one of the most appropriate technologies that can meet the challenges of such application areas. A variety of numeric and non-numeric problems are often required to be solved in the above mentioned areas. Prefix computation, polynomial root finding, matrix-matrix multiplication, conflict graph construction are some of the very important computations, which are frequently used for solving such problems. In this thesis, we mainly focus on the design of parallel algorithms for such computations to map them efficiently on suitable interconnection networks. We also study a specific interconnection network, called OTIS-Mesh of trees. We establish its various topological properties and propose several parallel algorithms on it.

Book Interconnection Networks and Mapping and Scheduling Parallel Computations

Download or read book Interconnection Networks and Mapping and Scheduling Parallel Computations written by Derbiau Frank Hsu and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interconnection network is one of the most basic components of a massively parallel computer system. Such systems consist of hundreds or thousands of processors interconnected to work cooperatively on computations. One of the central problems in parallel computing is the task of mapping a collection of processes onto the processors and routing network of a parallel machine. Once this mapping is done, it is critical to schedule computations within and communication among processors so that the necessary inputs for a process are available where and when the process is scheduled to be computed. This book contains the refereed proceedings of a DIMACS Workshop on Massively Parallel Computation, held in February 1994. The workshop brought together researchers from universities and laboratories, as well as practitioners involved in the design, implementation, and application of massively parallel systems. Focusing on interconnection networks of parallel architectures of today and of the near future, the book includes topics such as network topologies, network properties, message routing, network embeddings, network emulation, mappings, and efficient scheduling.

Book The SIMD Model of Parallel Computation

Download or read book The SIMD Model of Parallel Computation written by Robert Cypher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1 Background There are many paradigmatic statements in the literature claiming that this is the decade of parallel computation. A great deal of research is being de voted to developing architectures and algorithms for parallel machines with thousands, or even millions, of processors. Such massively parallel computers have been made feasible by advances in VLSI (very large scale integration) technology. In fact, a number of computers having over one thousand pro cessors are commercially available. Furthermore, it is reasonable to expect that as VLSI technology continues to improve, massively parallel computers will become increasingly affordable and common. However, despite the significant progress made in the field, many funda mental issues still remain unresolved. One of the most significant of these is the issue of a general purpose parallel architecture. There is currently a huge variety of parallel architectures that are either being built or proposed. The problem is whether a single parallel computer can perform efficiently on all computing applications.
