Book excerpt: In the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) accurate representations of fluid phenomena can be simulated but require large amounts of data to represent the flow domain. Inefficient handling and access of the data at initialization and runtime can limit the ability of the engineering to quickly visualize and investigate the entire flow simulation, and thus hampering the ability to make a quality engineering decision in a timely manner. This problem is amplified "n-fold" if the solution set is time dependent, or transient. To visualize the data efficiently, dataset access should be decreased if not eliminated at runtime to provide an interactive environment to the end user. Also a reduction in the size of the initial datasets should be reduced as much as possible while maintaining validity of the solution so that larger (i.e. transient) solution datasets can be visualized. To accomplish this, the format in which the dataset is stored should be changed from conventional formats. With the recent advancements of graphical processor unit (GPU) technology, current research in the computer graphics community has lead a novel approach for efficiently storing and accessing flow field data as texture data during a visualization. A so-called "texture-based" solution for visualization of flow fields allows the end user to visualize complex three-dimensional flow fields in an intuitive fashion while remaining interactive. This work presents a framework for incorporating texture-based analysis techniques into a current CFD visualization application to improve the capabilities for investigating flow fields. The framework presented easily extendible to allow for research and incorporation of progressive visualization methods, in keeping with current technology. Comparisons of the current framework with the texture-based framework are shown to effectively visualize a dataset that could not be visualized in its entirety with the current framework. Comparisons of common visualization techniques, such as contour planes and streamlines, are made to show how the texture-based framework out performs the current framework.

In the first four chapters, it provides a detailed account of the history of the development of 3D resources for visualisation. One centres around neuropsychiatric education, one is based on gaming technology and its application in a university biology curriculum, and the last of these chapters examines how ultrasound can be used in the modern day anatomical curriculum. The first of these chapters examines how skulls can be digitised in the creation of an educational and training package, with excellent hints and tips. The second of these chapters has a real-world application related to forensic anatomy which examines skulls and soft tissue landmarks in the creation of a database for Cretan skulls, comparing it to international populations. The last three chapters present technical perspetives on visual perception and visualisation. By detailing visual perception, visual analytics and examination of multi-modal, multi-parametric data, these chapters help to understand the true scientific meaning of visualisation. This research programme was based on the fact that experimental ?ow analysis, in addition to theory and numerics, has always played a predominant part both in ?ow research and in other areas of industrial practice. At the time, however, c- parisons with numerical tools (such as Computational Fluid Dynamics), which were increasingly used in research and practical applications, soon made it clear that there are relatively few experimental procedures which can keep up with state-of-the-art numerical methods in respect of their informative value, e.g. with regard to visu- spatial analysis or the dynamics of ?ow ?elds. The priority programme “Imaging Measurement Methods for Flow Analysis” was to help close this development gap. Hence the project was to focus on the investigation of ef?cient measurement me- ods to analyse complex spatial ?ow ?elds. Speci?c cooperations with computer sciences and especially measurement physics were to advance ?ow measurement techniques to a widely renowned key technology, exceeding the classical ?elds of ?uid mechanics by a long chalk.
