Book Striped Bass and Other Morone Culture

Download or read book Striped Bass and Other Morone Culture written by R.M. Harrell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-05-23 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up-to-date discussion of the culture of striped bass and other Morone spp. The subject matter is broken down into functional components of the spawning, husbandry, and economics of the industry, and is written by some of the leading scientists in each of the respective areas of discussion. The chapters on reproduction, nutrition, environmental requirements, transportation, economics and fish processing are not found anywhere else in the striped bass literature. The chapter on water quality takes a very non-traditional approach to considering the impact water quality has on the production success of Morone and offers some very thought-provoking ideas on water management.Primarily written as a reference work, this book is intended to complement existing technique manuals.

Book A Bioenergetics Assessment of Temperature and Food Consumption Effects on Growth of Reservoir Striped Bass

Download or read book A Bioenergetics Assessment of Temperature and Food Consumption Effects on Growth of Reservoir Striped Bass written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I examined the influence of temperature and food availability on growth of striped bass Morone saxatilis in seven North Carolina reservoirs. Reduced condition and summer mortality events of stocked striped bass in some southern reservoirs have been attributed to the habitat 'squeeze' of high summer temperatures and low dissolved oxygen (DO). However, in a recent study of Lakes Badin and Norman, NC, Thompson et al. (2005) intensively studied striped bass thermal selection, diet, mortality, and energetics, and concluded that food consumption was more important than temperature in explaining the large differences in growth between the systems. Following on this study, I analyzed striped bass growth, diet, predator and prey energy densities, and temperature experience in each of an additional five reservoirs in 2003-2005. Striped bass growth and thermal experience varied widely across all seven reservoirs. Fish growth to age-7 varied from less than 2kg to nearly 6 kg, and fish spent between 0 and 87 days in very warm (e"7 & deg;C) water during summer stratification. Striped bass from lakes that experienced the most severe summer temperature also exhibited relatively fast growth. Simulations of a Wisconsin bioenergetics model parameterized for striped bass estimated that striped bass annual consumption varied between 3,144g for age-2 fish in Lake Gaston and 24,616g for age-5 fish in Jordan Lake. I also used the bioenergetics model to test for the relative effects of water temperature and food consumption on growth by conducting a series of "habitat exchange simulations." In this approach I simulated how much the growth of a particular size fish in one reservoir might change if it had experienced the temperature or food consumption of a similarsized fish in another reservoir. The difference in growth predicted when exchanging consumption was greater than that resulting from exchanging temperature for every pair of lakes compared except for those including Lake Rhodhis.

Book Characterization of Compensatory Growth in Hybrid Striped Bass Morone Chrysops X Morone Saxatilis Hormones and Mechanisms

Download or read book Characterization of Compensatory Growth in Hybrid Striped Bass Morone Chrysops X Morone Saxatilis Hormones and Mechanisms written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compensatory growth (CG) is a period of growth acceleration that exceeds normal rates after animals are alleviated of certain growth-stunting conditions. While the endocrine control of growth in fishes and other vertebrates is regulated primarily through the growth hormone (GH) D insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis, the hormonal dynamics regulating accelerated (compensatory) phases of growth are poorly understood. We assessed whether CG responses could be induced in hybrid striped bass (HSB; Morone chrysops X Morone saxatilis) through feeding and/or temperature manipulation, and then examined whether components of the GH/IGF endocrine growth axis could be contributing to the response. We found that CG responses can be elicited in HSB following periods of 1) partial feed restriction, 2) complete feed restriction and 3) a combination of low water temperatures and complete feed restriction, with full catch-up growth being achieved in the latter. The most dramatic periods of CG were preceded by a catabolic state marked by body weight loss, hepatic steatosis, depressed hepatosomatic index values and an endocrine state of GH resistance. Upon alleviation of the growth-stunting condition, HSB displayed significant elevations in growth rate that exceeded controls by as much as 4 times. This CG response was accompanied by increases in feed intake (hyperphagia), improved feed conversion and a reversal of steatotsis and GH resistance. The onset of CG in feed manipulation studies was marked by significant elevations in total hepatic IGF-I mRNA and plasma IGF-I, indicating that elevated synthesis and secretion of the growth factor may mediate rapid growth responses. Strong correlations between systemic IGF-I and SGR suggest that circulating levels of IGF-I may serve as a biomarker of growth in HSB and perhaps other fishes. The 40kDa IGF binding protein (IGFBP) may also contribute to CG, since plasma levels increased in concordance with IGF-I and growth. Although little is.
