Book Perspectives For The Interacting Boson Model Proceedings On The Occasion Of Its 20th Anniversary

Download or read book Perspectives For The Interacting Boson Model Proceedings On The Occasion Of Its 20th Anniversary written by Richard F Casten and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-12-16 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings comprise the contents of a major international conference on Perspectives of the Interacting Boson Model. Occasioned by the 20th Anniversary of this model, and attended by approx. 130 scientists from 29 countries, the topics focused on current and future research, which relates to the IBM. This model has now become one of the standard approaches to nuclear structure and has helped usher in a renaissance in that field and a new, unified perspective that focuses on dynamical symmetries and the key role of the valence nucleons. The algebraic approach fostered by the model is being extended to other fields, including nuclear reactions, molecular physics and baryon structure.

Book Toward a Microscopic Understanding of the Interacting Boson Model of Nuclei

Download or read book Toward a Microscopic Understanding of the Interacting Boson Model of Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermion shell model Hamiltonians are constructed which have a class of eigenstates composed of monopole pairs and quadrupole pairs only. Since no boson approximation needs to be made, the Pauli principle is kept intact. Because the SO model has a one-to-one correspondence between the space spanned by the fermion states composed of the special monopole and quadrupole pairs of neutrons and protons and the space spanned by the monopole and quadrupole bosons, it is discussed in detail. Recent developments in the Sp6 model are also reported. These two models classify all the shell model states by the number of identical fermion pairs not coupled to coherent monopole or quadrupole pairs. It is suggested that light nuclei may combine features of both SU3 and SO6 symmetry simultaneously. 27 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs. (LEW).

Book Interacting Boson Model from Energy Density Functionals

Download or read book Interacting Boson Model from Energy Density Functionals written by Kosuke Nomura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a novel and robust way of deriving a Hamiltonian of the interacting boson model based on microscopic nuclear energy density functional theory. Based on the fact that the multi-nucleon induced surface deformation of finite nucleus can be simulated by effective boson degrees of freedom, observables in the intrinsic frame, obtained from self-consistent mean-field method with a microscopic energy density functional, are mapped onto the boson analog. Thereby, the excitation spectra and the transition rates for the relevant collective states having good symmetry quantum numbers are calculated by the subsequent diagonalization of the mapped boson Hamiltonian. Because the density functional approach gives an accurate global description of nuclear bulk properties, the interacting boson model is derived for various situations of nuclear shape phenomena, including those of the exotic nuclei investigated at rare-isotope beam facilities around the world. This work provides, for the first time, crucial pieces of information about how the interacting boson model is justified and derived from nucleon degrees of freedom in a comprehensive manner.

Book SO Model of Collectivity in Nuclei

Download or read book SO Model of Collectivity in Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interacting boson model (IBM) has been very successful in giving a unified and simple description of the spectroscopic properties of a wide range of nuclei, from vibrational through rotational nuclei. The three basic assumptions of the model are that (1) the valence nucleons move about a doubly closed core, (2) the collective low-lying states are composed primarily of coherent pairs of neutrons and pairs of protons coupled to angular momentum zero and two and (3) these coherent pairs are approximated as bosons. Thus the IBM is an approximation to the nuclear shell model in which the number of degrees of freedom are reduced drastically. Once these assumptions are made, the effective Hamiltonian can then be written in terms of neutron monopole (angular momentum zero) and quadrupole (angular momentum two) bosons and proton monopole and quadrupole bosons. Since each nucleus will have a fixed number of nucleon pairs this boson Hamiltonian will conserve the number of bosons. Phemonologically, the Hamiltonian is assumed to be finite and to be a sum of a boson self-energy Hamiltonian plus pairwise interactions between bosons. However, the parameters of the boson Hamiltonian depend smoothly on the mass of the nucleus. The mass dependence of these parameters presumably arise because of two effects resulting from the approximations made. In this review we shall show how it is possible to have fermion Hamiltonians which have a class of collective eigenstates composed entirely of monopole and quadrupole pairs of fermions. Hence these models satisfy the assumptions (1) and (2) above but no boson approximation need be made. Thus the Pauli principle is kept in tact. Furthermore the fermion shell model states excluded in the IBM can be classified by the number of fermion pairs which are not coherent monopole of quadrupole pairs. Hence the mixing of these states into the low-lying spectrum can be calculated in a systematic and tractable manner.

Book Interacting Bosons in Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Interacting Bosons in Nuclear Physics written by F. Iachello and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the week of June 6-9, 1978, a group of 36 physicists from 15 countries met in Erice, Sicily, for the first specialized seminar on "Interacting Bosons in Nuclear Physics". The countries represented were Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Yugoslavia. The Seminar was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI), the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRST), the North Atlantic Treaty Organiza tion (NATO) and the Regional Sicilian Government (ERS). The purpose of the Seminar was to discuss the present status of the Interacting Boson Model both from the theoretical and experi mental point of view. Some of the lectures presented in this book summarize particular aspects of the model and are based on previously published work (F. Iachello, R.F. Casten, Z. Sujkowski, L. Hassel gren, H. Emling, I. Talmi, T. Otsuka, J. McGrory, A.E.L. Dieperink and A. Arima). Others are entirely new. In particular, the lec tures of O. Scholten and A. Gelberg and V. Kaup present the first extensive set of calculations based on the proton-neutron boson model, while the lecture of J.N. Ginocchio describes a fermion model with properties identical to those of the interacting boson model. Also new are the le~tures of D.R. Bes, R.A. Broglia and P.F.

Book The Interacting Boson Fermion Model

Download or read book The Interacting Boson Fermion Model written by F. Iachello and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the mathematical framework on which the interacting boson-fermion model is built and presents applications to a variety of situations encountered in nuclei. It addresses both the analytical and the numerical aspects of the problem. The analytical aspect requires the introduction of rather complex group theoretic methods, including the use of graded (or super) Lie algebras. The first (and so far only) example of supersymmetry occurring in nature is also discussed.
