Book excerpt: Trace elements and impurities often segregate strongly to grain boundaries in metals and alloys. Concentrations of these elements at grain boundaries are often 103 to 105 times as great as their overall concentration in the alloy. Because of such segregation, certain trace elements can exert a disproportionate influence on material properties. One frequently observed consequence of trace element segregation to grain boundaries is the occurrence of grain boundary failure and low ductility. Less well known are incidences of improved ductility and inhibition of grain boundary fracture resulting from trace element segregation to grain boundaries in certain systems. An overview of trace element segregation and intergranular failure in a variety of alloy systems as well as preliminary results from studies on Al 3% Li will be presented.

Book excerpt: A unified, structural mechanism is proposed to explain the phenomena of intergranular and transgranular stress corrosion cracking. the dependence of failure on composition and stress in copper alloys andin stainless steels is analyzed in terms of two general conditions: (1). a chemically reactive path and (2). a mechanism of concentrating stress across the reactive path. intergranular fracture in a chemical environment is considered in terms of the normal stress distribution at the head of a group of dislocations piled up against a grainboundary. the available data are consistent with the proposed model with respect to (1). a grain size dependence (2). stacking fault energy, which defines the number of coherent twin boundaries per grain and thereby the stress concentration at the boundary and (3) the existence of an endurance stress, approximately equal to the macroscopic yield stress, below which the stress concentration at the boundary is insufficient to cause fracture. the nucleating sites for transgranular fracture in single crystals, and in polycrystalline aggre gates that fail transgranularly, are shown to be cottrell-lomer barriers. a detailed crystallographic mechanism of fracture is proposed which dependson (1) orientation with respect to applied stress and (2). the strength of the barrier, which is related to the stacking fault energy.

Book excerpt: Nickel-Copper Alloy K-500 products have exhibited rate-dependent, intergranular failure at temperatures as low as room temperature under ambient (low humidity), static load conditions. Failure probability has been correlated to the amount of grain boundary carbon precipitates existing in this alloy [1]. As part of an ongoing investigation to bound the service conditions of intergranular failure in nickel-copper alloy K-500 containing grain boundary precipitates of carbon, previously tested stress-rupture specimens were examined to document and characterize the deformation associated with grain boundary failures. Of particular interest was defining the role of the grain boundary carbon precipitates in the rate-dependent intergranular fracture process under ambient conditions. The failed creep/stress rupture specimens were sectioned perpendicular to the fracture surface and prepared for optical and electron microscopy of the microstructure adjacent to the primary fracture. High resolution microscopy revealed voids opened along the grain boundaries at carbon precipitate/nickel grain boundary interfaces. A diffusional-creep failure mechanism is postulated.
