Based on a comparative analysis of intensifiers and related expressions in the two languages, she examines the longitudinal production data of six German-speaking and six English-speaking children with regard to when and in which contexts the intensifiers German selbst/selber and English x-self (myself, yourself, himself, etc.) appear. As intensifiers evoke alternatives to the referent of their focus and relate a central referent to more peripheral alternative referents, they are an important linguistic means to structure the participants of a child's early discourse. By integrating intensifiers into their utterances, children can identify themselves as central. The notion of being included or excluded in a certain state of affairs is relevant for children when interacting with their parents and/or other children. In the course of development, children acquire a number of both linguistic and non-linguistic skills that characterize them as increasingly independent and competent agents. In this process, intensifiers are an important linguistic device with which children can negotiate and comment on their participation in a given event. The three parts of the volume consist first, of a detailed analysis of the intensifiers selbst/selber and x-self and related expressions such as allein and by x-self in the two languages. Special attention is given to the fact that in English, intensifiers and reflexive pronouns are identical expressions while in German they are distinct. Second, previous results of comprehension studies are carefully reviewed in order to relate them to the findings in longitudinal production data. Third, a detailed analysis of the children's early use of intensifiers and related expressions is presented.

Book excerpt: This book presents the Chinese reflexivisation system, investigating the different types of Chinese reflexive constructions and offering an analysis of these, in an attempt to integrate syntactic, morphological and discourse-related aspects of the phenomena. In Chinese, two distinct types of reflexive have been widely discussed in the literature: simplex reflexive ziji "self", which is a long-distance reflexive, and complex reflexive pronoun + ziji, such as taziji "himself", which must be locally bound. In addition, Chinese has a kind of double reflexive construction, such as ziji-benshen, and reflexive clitics zi "self" and ziwo "self". This book argues that reflexive clitics must be locally bound; and that under certain conditions, both simplex reflexive ziji and complex reflexives can be locally bound, long-distance bound, or even free in an entire sentence. This study proposes that every type of reflexive has two structures: one is an anaphoric structure, while the other is a logophoric structure. When a verb assigns an anaphoric theta role, the reflexive can have the anaphoric structure and the head of the reflexive NP is allowed to adjoin the head of the VP at LF. If a reflexive cannot receive an anaphoric theta role, it can have a logophoric structure. In the logophoric structure, the head of the reflexive DP must be a pro in order to receive the disjoint theta role from the verb.

The present volume offers an approach to reflexive forms and functions from several perspectives: a formal approach where reflexives are discussed within a well-defined model of language representation; a typological approach; a historical approach concentrating on grammaticalization of reflexives and on the changes that pronouns and anaphors undergo; and a functionalist approach where functions of reflexive forms are described. The languages from which data were drawn represent a wide variety of language families and language types: English, Old English, Dutch, German, Tsakhur (Nakh-Dagestanian), Spanish, French, Bantu and Chadic languages. The variety of languages discussed and the different approaches taken complement each other in that each contributes an important piece to the understanding of reflexives in a cross-linguistic perspective.

This book argues for the separation of contrastive and non-contrastive reflexives. This book will also show that ben-ren/shen and their compound forms, being inherently contrastive, differ from ziji and its compound forms in the contexts accessible to them; the latter can access linguistic contexts only, but the former can also access utterance situations and world knowledge.

Book excerpt: Mandarin Chinese has become the official Chinese language after the 1911 revolution, it has been taught in schools for many decades and now virtually every educated Chinese can speak the language. Today, Mandarin Chinese is spoken throughout the country in China, a Western tourist in China will have no trouble communicating with the Chinese in Mandarin Chinese. Some distinctive features of mandarin Chinese: 1. Nouns Quantifiers. Unlike the English language, nouns in Mandarin Chinese need quantifiers, just like articles in English. This often becomes hurdles to be got over in learning Mandarin Chinese. In English, the words 'a, an' can be used to refer to almost any countable nouns, such as a student, a horse. a cow, a camel, a ring, a clock, a tree, and a hair. A is used to refer to the above nouns. On the other hand, however, in Mandarin Chinese the above nouns have their respective quantifiers. 2. Verbs In Verbal Tenses And Voices Remain Unchanged. Other Words, mostly adverbs, are used to indicate different tenses and voices. As an example, if you want to indicate past tense, you may use such words as in the past, yesterday, last year. If you want to indicate future tense, you may use such words as next year, tomorrow, one day, etc. In nouns, no distinction between singuar and plural nouns. The same character stands for both forms. In pronouns, no distinction between subject pronouns (1, he, it, she, we, you) and object pronouns (her, him, it, me, them, us, you). No distinction between singular and plural pronouns (this, these, that, those). 3. There Are Four Common Ways Of Asking Questions. First, use a negative word. This is like the short form of a tag question in English. Second, use interrogative pronouns: Who, Whom, Where, What . Unlike English, nouns in Mandarin Chinese need quantifiers, not unlike articles in English. This often becomes hurdles to be got over in learning Mandarin Chinese. A standard Noun quantifier contains three characters, including one number, one quantifier and one noun. When translated into English, there are three forms: (1) it contains only two words, namely, a number and a noun, but no quantifier, such as a dog; (2) it contains three words, namely, a number, a partitive as quantifier, and a noun, such as a dose of medicine or a packet of cigarettes.
