Book An Evaluation of Alternative Fuels Usage by Public Transit Agencies

Download or read book An Evaluation of Alternative Fuels Usage by Public Transit Agencies written by Gwen Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil crisis of the 1970s forced Americans to reconsider using fossil fuels as a primary energy source. In the public transit arena, private transit companies found themselves unable to compete in the urban environment as rapidly rising oil prices negatively affected the economy and personal mobility. In response to the growing energy crises, the American government initiated policies designed to reduce the dependence on foreign oil. These new policies were implemented to reduce pollution, maintain fuel efficiency, and develop alternative fuels for use by private auto owners, governmental entities, and transit companies. This study offers a historical examination of the key legislation passed during the period of the 1970s - 2000s, provides a discussion of the types of alternative fuels developed and examines how transit agencies applied those technologies to try to meet the spirit of the legislation.

This study has been defined to assist the DART administration to make an optimal decision in this regard. The information used in this study was gathered from the latest scientific and practical reports published by Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It also combined with the knowledge that the author gained from two major recent conferences related to public transportation; 1) BusCon 2009 in Chicago, Illinois, and 2) APTA annual meeting 2009 in Orlando, FL.

Book Bus Systems for the Future

    Book Details:
  • Author : International Energy Agency
  • Publisher : Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Bus Systems for the Future written by International Energy Agency and published by Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development. This book was released on 2002 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities around the world face enormous problems of transport sustainability. Rapidly increasing populations and vehicle usage have created gridlock and sprawl, even in very poor cities, as well as unacceptably high levels of air pollution, noise, and accident rates. But improvements can be made. This book explores how the provision of better bus services can bring concrete solutions. "Bus rapid transit" systems emerging in Latin America provide fast, reliable and efficient urban travel for large numbers of people. Express busways, employing high-capacity buses and new technologies such as GPS-based bus tracking systems, can conveniently and reliably move up to 10 times as many people along a route as can cars - and be profitable. This book shows how bus rapid transit differs from traditional bus systems and how it can be developed around the world. There is a detailed look at clean fuels and advanced technologies such as "clean diesel", CNG, hybrid-electric and fuel cells. Case studies are made of six cities and of the steps each might take to encourage more sustainable transport systems.

Book Minimization of Carbon Footprint of Transit Agencies by Adopting Alternative Fuel Technologies

Download or read book Minimization of Carbon Footprint of Transit Agencies by Adopting Alternative Fuel Technologies written by Adrita Islam and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing trend in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission around the globe has been of broad and current interest for the past few decades. In the state of Connecticut, transportation is the largest contributor of GHG emission at about 42% of the total emission of 36.5 Million Metric Tons of CO2 equivalent. Although buses comprise less than 1% of the total transportation emissions in the country, transit agencies are trying to reduce their carbon footprint by adopting alternative fuel technology buses. The overarching objective of this thesis is to aid transit agencies make more informed decisions regarding the process of replacing the diesel fleet with alternative technology buses to minimize GHG emissions. This study investigates the complete course of fleet replacement in a more realistic way incorporating various scenario analysis. The first part of this research provides a user-friendly approach for a transit agency to document and analyze their current GHG emission footprint from both buses and facilities. The following part of the thesis analyzes the impact of introducing alternative fuel buses into an existing bus fleet on carbon footprint. It also includes life-cycle cost (LCC) analysis of those fleet replacement strategies. As a part of this study, a Python-based web tool was created to let the users (transit agencies) control for the input values, run multiple scenario analysis, and compare results. The final part of this thesis optimizes the fleet replacement schedule by minimizing the LCC of owning and operating a fleet of buses and required infrastructures and reducing GHG emission simultaneously. In all these studies, data from Connecticut Department of Transportation was used as a case study. The problems formulated and tools built in this thesis can help any transit and government agencies determine the most optimized solution to their fleet replacement problem under customizable constraints or desired set of outcomes.

Download or read book Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Bus FCEB Evaluations in US Public Transit Service written by and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency. NREL has evaluated alternative fuel and advanced propulsion transit buses for DOE and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA). These evaluations are focused on determining the status of fuel cell systems and the corresponding infrastructure in transit applications to help DOE and FTA assess the progress toward technology readiness. For the last 19 years NREL has evaluated FCEBs in service around the United States and in Canada. The results of these evaluations have been published in numerous reports that compare FCEB performance to conventional technology as well as document the implementation experience and lessons learned by the transit agencies and their demonstration teams. Currently, 70 fuel cell buses are in active service in the US and 66 FCEBs are in development. NREL is evaluating a subset of the active FCEBs that includes three transit agencies demonstrating 25 fuel cell electric buses in California. One bus has exceeded 35,000 hours in service and 12 have exceeded 25,000 hours. Fuel economy for the current generation of FCEBs has improved 35% over the previous generation and is double that of conventional buses. Maintenance cost for FCEBs is equivalent to diesel and BEBs. The most up-to-date performance results will be presented, including fuel economy, availability, reliability, and operational costs.
