Book Integrating Travel Time Reliability Into Management of Highways

Download or read book Integrating Travel Time Reliability Into Management of Highways written by David Lewis Adams and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing traffic congestion, travel time reliability is becoming an important measure for travelers and freight shippers to plan trips. While adding lanes to increase highway capacity may be very expensive, transportation agencies can provide travel time information to customers at a relatively minimal cost. The Washington State Department of Transportation has initiated an innovative program to achieve this goal (WSDOT). This information can take various forms, and different methods can be employed to improve travel time itself. This thesis presents WSDOT's travel time reliability program as a case study. Data on speeds from Pennsylvania are then analyzed to better understand how one measure of travel time reliability, the 95 th percentile travel time, varies by time of day and day of the week. Finally, the thesis explains the applicability of travel time reliability as a performance measure to be used in decision-making. Travel time reliability should certainly be a measure in a transportation agency's goal of improved customer service.

Book Urban Mobility Report 2004

Download or read book Urban Mobility Report 2004 written by David Schrank and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congestion continues to grow in America¿s urban areas. This report presents details on the 2004 trends, findings and what can be done to address the growing transportation problems. Trend data from 1982 to 2002 for 85 urban areas provides both a local view and a national perspective on the growth and extent of traffic congestion. The 2004 Report provides clear evidence that the time for improvements has arrived. Communicating the congestion levels and the need for improvements is a goal of this report. The decisions about which, and how much, improvement to fund will be made at the local level according to a variety of goals, but there are some broad conclusions that can be drawn from this database. Book Institutional Architectures to Improve Systems Operations and Management

Download or read book Institutional Architectures to Improve Systems Operations and Management written by and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The objective of this research was to undertake a comprehensive and systematic examination of the way agencies should be organized to successfully execute operations programs that improve travel time reliability. The following types of questions were examined at the outset of this research: How does operations fit into a transportation agency's overall program? What changes can be made in agency culture and training to promote operations? Which local and regional public agencies and private-sector organizations are essential to the various aspects of operations? Are there emerging technologies, systems, or organizational structures that can be used to advance intra-agency and interagency communications and therefore operations? The research addressed a large number of topics concerning organizational and institutional approaches that could enhance highway operations and travel time reliability. The most fruitful investigation was identification of the Capability Maturity Model, used extensively in the information technology field for organizational self-assessment and continuous improvement of quality and reliability. The researchers recognized that a version of the Capability Maturity Model could be developed and applied to highway operations and in turn travel time reliability. Elements defining different levels of maturity include culture/leadership, organization and staffing, resource allocation, and partnerships."--Publisher's description.
