Book Integrating the Use of Smartphone Applications for Weight Loss as Standard of Care for Obese and Overweight Populations

Download or read book Integrating the Use of Smartphone Applications for Weight Loss as Standard of Care for Obese and Overweight Populations written by Brandon Dean and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem: Obesity is one of the greatest health concerns facing Americans today. Obesity increases morbidity and mortality and is associated with many health conditions. The purpose of this study was to review the efficacy of using mobile technology for managing weight loss in the obese and overweight populations. Methods: A narrow, qualitative literature review was conducted focusing on articles published in the last three years that used mobile application-based interventions for weight loss. Results: A total of 10 studies were examined. It was identified that the use of mobile weight-loss applications exhibited an increase in either adherence to the program, physical activity, or healthier eating habits. Conclusions: Behavioral weight-loss management has proven to be effective in overweight and obese populations. Early studies have shown to be favorable for the use of mobile weight-loss applications for increasing adherence to weight-loss programs, although there is a need for long-term studies to assess the effectiveness of these interventions in not only losing weight, but also maintaining a healthy weight.

Book SMARTPHONE APPLICATIONS FOR THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY IN ADULTS AND ADOLESCENTS

Download or read book SMARTPHONE APPLICATIONS FOR THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY IN ADULTS AND ADOLESCENTS written by Akashkumar Suthar and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Obesity continues to overwhelm health care in the US with 33.1% of adults overweight, and 35.7% of adults obese.1 Obesity causes the atherometabolic syndrome, which includes the deadly triad of dysglycemia, atherogenic dyslipoproteinemia, and hypertension, and is associated with other health problems such as the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, increased risk of certain cancers, degenerative joint disease, sleep apnea, and asthma. Favorable changes in lifestyle remain difficult to achieve, and so clinicians now rely heavily on weight-loss medications and bariatric surgery for the treatment of obesity and its associated health problems. Because of the zeal with which many people use smartphone applications ("apps"), several research groups have attempted to use applications as tools for lifestyle interventions. The applications are used primarily as instruments to decrease caloric consumption and increase physical activity. We conducted a meta-analysis of published studies to determine the strength of current evidence for an effect of smartphone applications on body weight in overweight and obese subjects. Methods We performed searches in databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and psycINFO. Randomized controlled clinical trials in adolescents or adults that included weight as a primary or secondary outcome and used smartphone applications in lifestyle interventions were selected for analysis. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that specifically compared subjects randomized to use, or to not use, a smartphone app. Results Of 302 published studies on smartphone applications and weight loss, only 12 met our inclusion and exclusion criteria for our meta-analysis. The longest duration to measure weight outcome was 24 months. Taken individually, only 10 of the 12 studies reported statistically significantly more weight loss with versus without a smartphone app, and 2 studies reported significantly less weight loss with versus without a smartphone application. Moreover, there was considerable heterogeneity amongst the 12 studies in the smartphone applications they used and how they tested them. Nevertheless, in our meta-analysis combining the 12 studies, we found a statistically significant Hedges' g effect size of -2.260 (95% CI: -3.251 to -1.269, p

Book excerpt: The use of mobile and wireless technologies to support the achievement of health objectives (mHealth) has the potential to transform the face of health service delivery across the globe. A powerful combination of factors is driving this change. These include rapid advances in mobile technologies and applications, a rise in new opportunities for the integration of mobile health into existing eHealth services, and the continued growth in coverage of mobile cellular networks. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), there are now over 5 billion wireless subscribers; over 70% of them reside in low- and middle-income countries. For the first time the World Health Organization's Global Observatory for eHealth (GOe) has sought to determine the status of mHealth in Member States; its 2009 global survey contained a section specifically devoted to mHealth. Completed by 114 Member States, the survey documented for analysis four aspects of mHealth: adoption of initiatives, types of initiatives, status of evaluation, and barriers to implementation. Fourteen categories of mHealth services were surveyed: health call centres, emergency toll-free telephone services, managing emergencies and disasters, mobile telemedicine, appointment reminders, community mobilization and health promotion, treatment compliance, mobile patient records, information access, patient monitoring, health surveys and data collection, surveillance, health awareness raising, and decision support systems.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in diet and at least 5 % weight loss may prevent or delay several obesity-related chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. Technical tools such as mobile health (mHealth) applications seems to be effective in weight loss interventions. However, there is less evidence of integrated and innovative smartphone application-based interventionu00b4s effectiveness in long-term weight loss and quality of life. It is usual that lost weight is typically regained. Little is known about specific factors (e.g. social support, sleep, mood) that can improve success on lifestyle changes. New methods for maintaining weight loss and lifestyle changes are needed. The aim is to study mHealth applicationu00b4s effectiveness and which factors (e.g. social support, sleep, mood) implicates success on lifestyle change and weight loss among overweight and obese adults compared to control group. The aim is also to find out the interventionu00b4s effectiveness to quality of life, dietary intake and eating behaviours, blood glucose and lipids and can the intervention improve self-efficacy.Overweight and obese (BMI 25-40 kg/mu00b2), 50-65 years adults (n=120) will be recruited for 6-month intervention period with 2 years follow up. Participants in the intervention group use a smartphone application to keep visual food journal, share their meals and activities with their peer group members and receive virtual coaching from nutritionist. The intervention is based on cognitive behavioral approach. The control group receives a leaflet of healhty eating. Main outcome measures are weight change and health related quality of life, assessed with 15D-questionnaire. Self-efficacy and habit strength will be assessed with scales. Blood fasting glucose, lipids, weight and waist circumference will be measured. Food intake will be measured on three-day food diary and eating behaviours with Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire R18. Overall interaction with the application will be measured continuously throughout the study period. Coachu00b4s activity, user logins, meal photos, likes, comments, exercise entries made in application, sleep, stress level and mood will be analysed. This study will provide new information about the use of mHealth for long term weight loss and helps to identify the markers for successful lifestyle changes. Intervention is easily scalable, and it can provide new methods to be used in healthcare.Conflict of interest:There is no conflict of interest.

By infusing the best science across disciplines, this book creates new environments of "Smart and Connected Health." Oncology Informatics is also a policy guide in an era of extensive reform in healthcare settings, including new incentives for healthcare providers to demonstrate "meaningful use" of these technologies to improve system safety, engage patients, ensure continuity of care, enable population health, and protect privacy. Oncology Informatics acknowledges this extraordinary turn of events and offers practical guidance for meeting meaningful use requirements in the service of improved cancer care. Anyone who wishes to take full advantage of the health information revolution in oncology to accelerate successes against cancer will find the information in this book valuable. Presents a pragmatic perspective for practitioners and allied health care professionals on how to implement Health I.T. solutions in a way that will minimize disruption while optimizing practice goals Proposes evidence-based guidelines for designers on how to create system interfaces that are easy to use, efficacious, and timesaving Offers insight for researchers into the ways in which informatics tools in oncology can be utilized to shorten the distance between discovery and practice

Book Implementing Strategies to Enhance Public Health Surveillance of Physical Activity in the United States

Download or read book Implementing Strategies to Enhance Public Health Surveillance of Physical Activity in the United States written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical activity has far-reaching benefits for physical, mental, emotional, and social health and well-being for all segments of the population. Despite these documented health benefits and previous efforts to promote physical activity in the U.S. population, most Americans do not meet current public health guidelines for physical activity. Surveillance in public health is the ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of outcome-specific data, which can then be used for planning, implementation and evaluation of public health practice. Surveillance of physical activity is a core public health function that is necessary for monitoring population engagement in physical activity, including participation in physical activity initiatives. Surveillance activities are guided by standard protocols and are used to establish baseline data and to track implementation and evaluation of interventions, programs, and policies that aim to increase physical activity. However, physical activity is challenging to assess because it is a complex and multidimensional behavior that varies by type, intensity, setting, motives, and environmental and social influences. The lack of surveillance systems to assess both physical activity behaviors (including walking) and physical activity environments (such as the walkability of communities) is a critical gap. Implementing Strategies to Enhance Public Health Surveillance of Physical Activity in the United States develops strategies that support the implementation of recommended actions to improve national physical activity surveillance. This report also examines and builds upon existing recommended actions.

Book Evaluating Acceptability and the Influence of Telemedicine Dosage in Promoting Weight Loss and Future Usage in Older Adults with Obesity

Download or read book Evaluating Acceptability and the Influence of Telemedicine Dosage in Promoting Weight Loss and Future Usage in Older Adults with Obesity written by Patricia Dionicio and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Obesity worsens mental and physical performance in older adults and has been found to be a negative influence on the aging process and associated chronic conditions. In order to address physical and economic challenges for older adults affected by obesity, unique approaches that promote weight loss and properly mitigate barriers to accessing health services are warranted. With rising rates of technology usage among the older adult population, the integration of telemedicine into programs targeting obesity holds potential to improve health outcomes. Telemedicine provides a potential avenue of access between physicians and this at-risk population. To date, few studies have incorporated telemedicine-based strategies into weight loss programs or examined the influence of age, telemedicine dosage, or comorbidities on associated weight loss outcomes. Additionally, no studies have assessed older adults’ acceptance of telemedicine in a weight-loss program with health coaching. Thus, assessing the influence of dosage in a telemedicine-based weight loss program with health coaching and the acceptability of this strategy in this population is warranted. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the inHealth Medical Services, Inc. Medical Weight Loss (MWL) and Chronic Care Management (CCM) program dosage and age on weight loss. This study also assessed the influence of constructs from the TAM and TRA on telemedicine acceptance and future usage in adults with obesity. This study incorporated two components: Study 1 focused on the influence of dosage, while Study 2 focused on factors that influence dosage. Results indicated no significant relationship between telemedicine dosage and weight loss in Study 1. A marginal finding was identified for the relationship between CCM age and weight loss (p =.053). Findings in Study 2 indicated perceived usefulness was significantly associated with perceived ease of use (p

Download or read book Obesity and Diabetes written by Joel Faintuch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its second edition, this comprehensive handbook provides a state-of-the-art overview of recent advances in drug and non-drug therapies for obesity and diabetes. It also addresses major comorbidities, covering topics such as, cardiovascular diseases, renal and neuropsychiatric disorders, appetite control and micro RNAs. Special attention is also devoted to pediatric care, including the latest recommendations for therapy and prevention. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are among the top global health-care budget concerns worldwide and impact professional practice at all levels: in hospitals, clinics and physicians’ offices alike. They prominently feature in headlines, and virtually no family, community or country is exempt from their protean, deleterious consequences. Furthermore, given the multiple intersections in their pathways, they often go hand in hand. The good news is that scientific advances in all fields, including genomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and microbiomics, are increasing our understanding of these two disease areas. At the same time, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mobile health and advanced implantable and external devices are rendering prevention and management more available, safe and cost-effective. In addition, bariatric and metabolic surgery has evolved from a niche specialty to an officially endorsed option for several modalities of obesity and diabetes. This book presents the latest lifestyle, pharmacological, surgical and non-surgical treatment options, including endoscopic intervention and cell therapy. Objectively reviewing natural and artificial sweeteners and critically examining issues such as public health initiatives, government mandated taxes for unhealthy foods and environmental planning, no stone is left unturned in gathering the latest practical information. As such, the book will appeal to seasoned specialists, as well as students and healthcare professionals in training.
