Book Integrating a Leadership and Team Building Module in Community Emergency Response Team Training

Download or read book Integrating a Leadership and Team Building Module in Community Emergency Response Team Training written by J.0 Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The demand for well-balanced and well-trained Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) is growing, but the training curriculum is not. CERT training currently ranges from basic first-aid and small fire suppression to light search and rescue and terrorism. What CERT does not train is leadership. The purpose of this study is two-fold: assess the satisfaction level of CERT leadership and training from CERT, first responders, and government employees; and to develop a structured leadership profile based on traits, skills, and styles of CERT members and leaders. A survey was administered to 1,798 members of CERT, first responders, and government employees. The survey measures the satisfaction levels of CERT collaboration within the Incident Command System, collaboration at the team level, CERT training, and CERT leadership. The survey also builds a leadership profile by establishing the importance of various leadership traits, skills, and styles. A CERT leader is one who maintains a high level of integrity at all times. He or she has the self-confidence to accomplish the assigned task and the necessary human and social skills to motivate others in the team. And finally, the CERT leader is constantly aware of the situation by focusing not only on task accomplishment, but about the welfare of the members of the team.

Book Community Emergency Response Team Basic Training Instructor Guide

Download or read book Community Emergency Response Team Basic Training Instructor Guide written by U. s. Department of Homeland Security and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the events of September 11, 2001, Citizen Corps was launched as a grassroots strategy to strengthen community safety and preparedness through increased civic participation. Since then, the importance of preparedness education, training, and involving the whole community has become increasingly recognized as critical to successful community preparedness and resilience. Citizen Corps is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, within the Department of Homeland Security, but is implemented locally. Communities across the country have created Citizen Corps Councils as effective partnerships between government and community leaders to focus on the following objectives: engaging the whole community in collaborative community planning and capacity building; integration of community resources; outreach and localized preparedness education and training; emergency communications to all population segments; drills and exercises; and, volunteer programs. CERT is a critical program in the effort to engage everyone in America in making their communities safer, more prepared, and more resilient when incidents occur. Community-based preparedness planning allows us all to prepare for and respond to anticipated disruptions and potential hazards following a disaster. As individuals, we can prepare our homes and families to cope during that critical period. Through pre-event planning, neighborhoods and worksites can also work together to help reduce injuries, loss of lives, and property damage. Neighborhood preparedness will enhance the ability of individuals and neighborhoods to reduce their emergency needs and to manage their existing resources until professional assistance becomes available. Studies of behavior following disasters have shown that groups working together in the disaster period perform more effectively if there has been prior planning and training for disaster response. These studies also show that organized grassroots efforts may be more successful if they are woven into the social and political fabric of the community-neighborhood associations, schools, workplaces, places of worship, and other existing organizations. Effective response therefore requires comprehensive planning and coordination of all who will be involved-government, volunteer groups, private businesses, schools, and community organizations. With training and information, individuals and community groups can be prepared to serve as a crucial resource capable of performing many of the emergency functions needed in the immediate post-disaster period. The CERT Program is designed to train individuals to be assets to help communities prepare for effective disaster response. The purpose of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training is to provide the individuals who complete this course with the basic skills that they will need to respond to their community's immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster, when emergency services are not immediately available. By working together, CERT members can assist in saving lives and protecting property using the basic techniques in this course. The target audience for this course is individuals who desire the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and respond to a disaster.

Book Emergency Working Groups at Airports

Download or read book Emergency Working Groups at Airports written by James F. Smith (Airport emergency management consultant) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Airports - especially in the past two decades - have generally sought to promote and increase collaboration among the members of the airport community, particularly between an airport and its airlines. One metric of this trend has been the increase in the number of U.S. airports with full-time emergency managers, from fewer than 10 in 2007 to more than 120 today. Collaboration and increased professionalism in airport emergency management have gone hand in hand. No matter whether the incident is aircraft-related or an incident in the terminal - such as an active shooter, a bomb threat, or other hazard - the goal of airports, airlines, and others in the airport community is to achieve safety, security, compassion, customer service, regulatory compliance, and reputation. Achieving these goals can contribute to resiliency and to the protection of critical infrastructure and key resources. Although air travel is one of the safest modes of travel, and airports are among the safest public spaces in the United States, air-travel incidents do occur. ACRP Synthesis 99: Emergency Working Groups at Airports documents these working groups and how they assist victims and their families and friends in the weeks following an incident." -- Publisher's website.

Book Emergency Incident Management Systems

Download or read book Emergency Incident Management Systems written by Mark S. Warnick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition was to be written in order to keep both reader and student current in incident management. This was grounded in the fact that incident management systems are continually developing. These updates are needed to ensure the most recent and relevant information is provided to the reader. While the overall theme of the book will remain the same of the first edition, research and research-based case studies will be used to support the need for utilizing emergency incident management systems. Contemporary research in the use (and non-use) of an incident management system provides clear and convincing evidence of successes and failures in managing emergencies. This research provides areas where first responders have misunderstood the scope and use of an emergency incident management system and what the outcomes were. Contemporary and historical (research-based) case studies in the United States and around the globe have shown the consequences of not using emergency incident management systems, including some that led to increased suffering and death rates. Research-based case studies from major incidents will be used to show the detrimental effects of not using or misunderstanding these principles. One of the more interesting chapters in the new edition is what incident management is used around the world.
