Book Integrated Reporting and Information Asymmetry Exploring Disclosure Quantity Quality and Connectivity of the Capitals of Forbes Global 2000 Firms

Download or read book Integrated Reporting and Information Asymmetry Exploring Disclosure Quantity Quality and Connectivity of the Capitals of Forbes Global 2000 Firms written by Stephan Fuhrmann and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated reporting (IR) aims to enhance the information environment for providers of financial capital by connecting financial and non-financial disclosures. This paper investigates whether the disclosure quantity, quality, and connectivity of the six capitals within an integrated report decrease information asymmetry, as measured by the bid-ask spread. We use a unique set of hand-collected data derived from a content analysis of all 169 integrated reports disclosed by the 2,000 largest listed companies worldwide in 2013 and 2014. First, we provide evidence that a higher share of disclosures on human, intellectual, and manufactured capital in relation to financial capital disclosures reduces information asymmetry. This implies that disclosures on the capitals closely linked to the value creation process are beneficial for investors. Second, we find that the connectivity of the capitals further decreases information asymmetry, which encourages the approach of connected disclosures on the value creation process. Third, we show that only higher quality of financial capital disclosures further decreases information asymmetry. This may imply a lack of credibility of numerical and future-oriented non-financial disclosures. Overall, our study concludes that the current efforts of companies' disclosures within integrated reports improve the information environment for investors and, thus, decrease information asymmetry.

Firms provide disclosure through regulated financial reports, including the financial statements, footnotes, management discussion and analysis, and other regulatory filings. In addition, some firms engage in voluntary communication, such as management forecasts, analysts? presentations and conference calls, press releases, internet sites, and other corporate reports. Finally, there are disclosures about firms by information intermediaries, such as financial analysts, industry experts, and the financial press.

Book Information Asymmetry and the Ex Ante Impact of Public Disclosure Quality on Price Efficiency and the Cost of Capital

Download or read book Information Asymmetry and the Ex Ante Impact of Public Disclosure Quality on Price Efficiency and the Cost of Capital written by Orie E. Barron and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the ex ante effects of public information quality on market prices and how such effects vary with information asymmetry among traders in a two-period experimental market. We vary public information quality by changing its precision and information asymmetry among traders by varying the distribution of private signals. We find high quality public disclosure leads to increased price efficiency and decreased cost of capital in the pre-announcement period when information asymmetry is high. The impending high quality public information increases the competition among informed traders, which leads prices to impound more private information and alleviates adverse selection problem facing uninformed traders. Our study suggests that building a high quality public information environment, e.g., by adopting a high quality accounting standards or following transparent disclosure policy is likely to provide ex ante benefits for firms with significant adverse selection among traders.

Book Exploring Corporate Disclosure and Reporting of Intellectual Capital

Download or read book Exploring Corporate Disclosure and Reporting of Intellectual Capital written by Rosa Lombardi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This e-book explores corporate disclosure of intellectual capital (IC) in light of emerging changes in technology and communication. Arguably, the annual report has long outlived itself as the best source of corporate disclosure because it contains backward looking information and is only a one-way means of presenting information rather than engaging with information users. Similarly, the stand-alone IC report is now rarely used to disclose IC information. In fact, the words "reporting" and "disclosure" are often used synonymously when they have different meanings. Disclosure is: "the revelation of information that was previously secret or unknown", while reporting is a "detailed periodic account of a company's activities, financial condition, and prospects that is made available to shareholders and investors" (Dumay, 2016, p. 178). Thus, investors and stakeholders value IC disclosures, not reports. Therefore, this e-book encourages emerging innovations for voluntary IC disclosure, to open up new possibilities for presenting previously secret or unknown IC information about today's dynamic and intangible based organizations.

Book Financial Reporting and Disclosure Quality and Emerging Market Companies Access to Capital in Global Markets

Download or read book Financial Reporting and Disclosure Quality and Emerging Market Companies Access to Capital in Global Markets written by Carol Ann Frost and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines how five financial reporting and disclosure quality proxies are related to emerging markets (EM) firms' cross-listing choices and their access to the global capital market. Our five financial reporting and disclosure quality proxies are transparency of the annual report, global vs. local auditor, global vs. local GAAP, translation of the annual report into English, and voluntary dissemination of information through websites. We first ask whether this set of proxies reflects a single (or two) underlying financial reporting quality constructs using a principal components factor analysis. We find that the proxies are sufficiently distinct to escape parsimonious description as a single construct. This result suggests that EM firms pick and choose from among alternatives to enhance their financial reporting and disclosure quality, rather than moving from low quality to high quality on all dimensions simultaneously. We next document the relations among our reporting and disclosure proxies and EM firms' decisions to be listed or traded in U.S. and U.K. capital markets, after controlling for factors we expected to be associated with firms' cross-listing decisions. Evidence in prior research leaves open the question of the endogeneity of cross-listing and financial reporting and disclosure quality. We find evidence of a strong association between each of our five proxies and EM firms' participation in U.S. and U.K. capital markets, but the variation in the five proxies (plus the controls) explains only about 40% of the variation in firms' cross-listing patterns. This result is important because it suggests that EM firms view being listed or traded in the U.S. or the U.K. as a substitute rather than a complement to enhanced financial reporting and disclosure quality. Finally, we find the reporting and disclosure proxies are not significantly correlated with the amount of debt and equity capital raised in global markets, after controlling for the effects of cross-listing in the U.S. and the U.K. and other control variables. In contrast, firms' cross-listing choices are strongly correlated with amount of capital raised. From this evidence we conclude that, consistent with the bonding hypothesis, EM firms' presence in U.S. and U.K. capital markets is a more important factor in their ability to raise capital than are their financial reporting and disclosure quality choices.

Book Theoretical Insights on Integrated Reporting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PurposeCorporations and large entities are increasingly disclosing material information on their financial and non-financial capitals in integrated reports (IR). The rationale behind their IR is to improve their legitimacy with institutions and stakeholders, as they are expected to communicate on all aspects of their value-creating activities, business models and strategic priorities. In this light, the purpose of this paper is to trace the theoretical underpinnings that have led to the organizations' environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures, and explain the purpose of integrated thinking and reporting.Design/methodology/approachFollowing a review of relevant theories in business and society literature, this contribution examines the latest developments in corporate communication. This research explores the GRI's latest Sustainability Reporting Standards as it sheds light on IIRC's.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Integrated Reporting as a contemporary social and managerial innovation where a number of initiatives, organizations and individuals began to converge in response to the need for a consistent, collaborative and internationally accepted approach to redesign corporate reporting. Integrated Reporting is a process that results in communication of the annual “integrated report” which describes value creation over time. An integrated report is a concise communication about how an organization’s strategy, governance, performance and prospects lead to the creation of value over the short, medium and long term. This book offers a fresh perspective with expert contributions focusing on both the theoretical underpinnings and the practical challenges for the future of corporate reporting.

Book Global Waves of Debt

Download or read book Global Waves of Debt written by M. Ayhan Kose and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy has experienced four waves of rapid debt accumulation over the past 50 years. The first three debt waves ended with financial crises in many emerging market and developing economies. During the current wave, which started in 2010, the increase in debt in these economies has already been larger, faster, and broader-based than in the previous three waves. Current low interest rates mitigate some of the risks associated with high debt. However, emerging market and developing economies are also confronted by weak growth prospects, mounting vulnerabilities, and elevated global risks. A menu of policy options is available to reduce the likelihood that the current debt wave will end in crisis and, if crises do take place, will alleviate their impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrastructure—electricity, telecommunications, roads, water, and sanitation—are central to people’s lives. Without it, they cannot make a living, stay healthy, and maintain a good quality of life. Access to basic infrastructure is also a key driver of economic development. This report lays out a framework for understanding infrastructure resilience - the ability of infrastructure systems to function and meet users’ needs during and after a natural hazard. It focuses on four infrastructure systems that are essential to economic activity and people’s well-being: power systems, including the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity; water and sanitation—especially water utilities; transport systems—multiple modes such as road, rail, waterway, and airports, and multiple scales, including urban transit and rural access; and telecommunications, including telephone and Internet connections.

Book World Development Report 2020

Download or read book World Development Report 2020 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

Book Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting

Download or read book Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting written by Charl Villiers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting deals with organizations’ assessment, articulation and disclosure of their social and environmental impact on various groups in society. There is increasingly an understanding that financial information does not sufficiently discharge organizational accountability to members of society who are demanding an account of the social and environmental impacts of companies’ and other organizations’ activities. As a result, organizations report ever more social and environmental information, and there are simultaneous movements towards providing the information in an integrated fashion, showing how social and environmental activities influence each other, members of society and the financial aims of the organization. The book Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting provides a broad and comprehensive review of the field, focusing on the interconnection between different elements of these topics, often dealt with in isolation. The book examines the accounting involved in the collection and analysis of data, control processes over the data, how information is reported to external parties, and the assurance of the information being reported. The book thereby provides an overview useful to practitioners (including sustainability managers, consultants, members of the accounting profession, and other assurance providers), academics, and students.

Book World Development Report 2006

Download or read book World Development Report 2006 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005-09-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Development Report 2006: Equity and Opportunitypresents a social development strategy organized around the themes of social inclusion, cohesion, and accountability. It examines equality of opportunities--a potentially important factor affecting both the workings of the investment environment and the empowerment of the poor--by building on and extending existing accountability frameworks presented in the 2005Report. TheReportis divided into three parts. Part I describes patterns of inequality in a range of variables both at the national and global level-incomes, educational achievements, health indicators, power, and influence. Part II highlights reasons why some levels of inequality in the variables presented in Part I may be too high-whether for intrinsic reasons or because they harm the attainment of competing values, such as the level of goods and services in the economy. Part III discusses policies that affect the relationship between equity and the development process at a national and global level. This section includes policies that could help reduce the levels of some intermediate inequalities and focuses on circumstances in which these polices form the basis for more rapid overall development and faster poverty reduction. Now in its twenty-eighth edition, theWorld Development Reportoffers practical insights for policymakers, business developers, economic advisers, researchers, and professionals in the media and in non-governmental organizations. It is also an essential supplement to economic and development courses in both academic and professional settings.
