Book Consumption Food and Taste

Download or read book Consumption Food and Taste written by Alan Warde and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1997-02-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the expression of taste through the processes of consumption this book provides an incisive and accessible evaluation of the current theories of consumption, and trends in the representation and purchase of food. Alan Warde outlines various theories of change in the twentieth century, and considers the parallels between their diagnoses of consumer behaviour and actual trends in food practices. He argues that dilemmas of modern practical life and certain imperatives of the culture of consumption make sense of food selection. He suggests that contemporary consumption is best viewed as a process of continual selection among an unprecedented range of generally accessible items which are made available both commercially and informally.

Book Quantitative Methods in Social Work

Download or read book Quantitative Methods in Social Work written by David F. Gillespie and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing some of the best research efforts currently found among social workers, Quantitative Methods in Social Work serves as both a guide and a challenge to social work researchers interested in the application of quantitative methods to social work problem solving. This application of research methods has not been described or discussed adequately in any formal way until now. In a comprehensive manner, this book documents the most advanced quantitative methodologies currently applied by social work researchers and describes issues and techniques that accompany specific applications. It increases social workers'understanding of state-of-the-art applied statistical analysis, enabling them to become more competent and competitive in research and the teaching of research strategies. Quantitative Methods in Social Work addresses three types of methodological issues: measurement, the incorporation of nonquantitative variables in quantitative data analysis, and the use of quantitative analytic techniques to model and assess complex social phenomena. Chapters cover the use of computers for content analysis, structural equation modeling in measurement, logistic regression, loglinear analysis, event history analysis, social network analysis, and discussions of moderator variables and interaction effects in multiple regression. Social work faculty and doctoral students, along with other human service professionals who want to increase their understanding of applied statistical analysis in social and behavioral research, will find the information they need in this informative book.

Book Discriminant Analysis and Applications

Download or read book Discriminant Analysis and Applications written by T. Cacoullos and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discriminant Analysis and Applications comprises the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Discriminant Analysis and Applications held in Kifissia, Athens, Greece in June 1972. The book presents the theory and applications of Discriminant analysis, one of the most important areas of multivariate statistical analysis. This volume contains chapters that cover the historical development of discriminant analysis methods; logistic and quasi-linear discrimination; and distance functions. Medical and biological applications, and computer graphical analysis and graphical techniques for multidimensional data are likewise discussed. Statisticians, mathematicians, and biomathematicians will find the book very interesting.

Download or read book Measuring Alcohol Consumption written by Raye Z. Litten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Importance of Measuring Alcohol Consumption To date, alcohol studies have attended far more to issues of alco hol dependence and the harmful consequences of drinking than to the level of alcohol consumption itself. This is, perhaps, not surprising since dependence on alcohol is believed to constitute a meaningful and distinct medical syndrome, regardless of the level of alcohol consumption associated with it (Edwards and Gross, 1976). Also, of society is generally more concerned with the adverse consequences drinking (e. g. , traffic fatalities, homelessness, health care and legal expenses, and academiclbehavioral problems in young drinkers), than with the quantity of alcohol actually consumed. Nevertheless, accurate assessment of alcohol usage is important in its own right in at least four contexts: 1. Evaluating the effectiveness of alcoholism and alcohol abuse treatment and prevention efforts. Such efforts include both applied evaluations of existing programs and formal, well-controlled efficacy studies on experimental interventions. These investigations require rigorous methodologies to assess outcomes precisely and contrast what may be quite subtle differences between programs and between pre treatment and posttreatment outcomes. Although these studies are usually characterized by the employment of multiple measures of success-including general improvements in social and physical functioning, reduction in degree of dependence, and resolution of problems directly resultant from drinking-it is by their assessment of changes in drinking behavior that they are potentially able to achieve the highest level of objectivity and exactitude.

Book Practical Multivariate Analysis

Download or read book Practical Multivariate Analysis written by Abdelmonem Afifi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth edition of a popular textbook on multivariate analysis. Well-regarded for its practical and accessible approach, with excellent examples and good guidance on computing, the book is particularly popular for teaching outside statistics, i.e. in epidemiology, social science, business, etc. The sixth edition has been updated with a new chapter on data visualization, a distinction made between exploratory and confirmatory analyses and a new section on generalized estimating equations and many new updates throughout. This new edition will enable the book to continue as one of the leading textbooks in the area, particularly for non-statisticians. Key Features: Provides a comprehensive, practical and accessible introduction to multivariate analysis. Keeps mathematical details to a minimum, so particularly geared toward a non-statistical audience. Includes lots of detailed worked examples, guidance on computing, and exercises. Updated with a new chapter on data visualization.
