Book Insurance Regulation in Jordan

Book excerpt: The Jordanian insurance market has been free from extensive state ownership and pervasive premium, product, investment, and reinsurance controls. However, these positive features have been marred by the licensing of a large number of private companies, often on political rather than professional criteria, and the resulting fragmentation of the sector. Various policies have perpetuated the fragmentation of the sector, while regulatory forbearance has allowed the continuing operation of several weak companies. Despite the avoidance of pervasive controls and extensive state ownership, and the presence of a large number of private companies, the insurance industry is not well developed. This mainly reflects the underdevelopment of life insurance. In contrast, the level of general insurance is comparable to several other developing countries in the region and elsewhere. A major modernization effort has been undertaken in recent years. This has included the enactment of a new insurance law and the creation of a new Insurance Commission. The latter has made considerable progress in expanding its staff, undertaking a wide-ranging training program to upgrade skills, and implementing a multi-year action plan aimed at modernizing the regulatory framework and enhancing the efficiency of the sector.

Book The Report Jordan 2014

Download or read book The Report Jordan 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of Jordan’s key economic indicators have improved over the last year and GDP is forecast to grow by 3.5% in 2014. Jordan’s reliance on energy imports is being addressed with increased focus on domestic oil shale reserves and nuclear energy, while plans to build a pipeline through the country from Iraq will provide a stable oil supply at discounted rates. Jordan’s expanding population has put pressure on state services, particularly health, where the private sector is expected to play an increasingly prominent role. Tourism revenues rose in 2014 and, with the unveiling of a new arrivals terminal at Aqaba International Airport and plans for a national rail network, these are expected to rise further in the coming years. All in all, continued political stability, large scale transportation developments, the availability of a young, educated workforce and government efforts to reduce the fiscal deficit and the country’s reliance on energy imports should ensure Jordan maintains its strong position in the region.

Book excerpt: This paper presents Jordan’s 2020 Article IV Consultation and Request for an Extended Arrangement Under the Extended Fund Facility (ECF). Jordan’s IMF-supported economic reform program is anchored on structural reforms designed to spur growth by creating jobs—especially for women and young people—and reduce poverty. The Jordanian economy has continued facing significant challenges. Macroeconomic stability and external buffers have been preserved, but fiscal vulnerabilities remain. Structural reforms and continued fiscal consolidation efforts are critical to lift growth, reduce unemployment and bring debt on a downward path. Continued support from donors, particularly through concessional loans and budget grants, will be critical to help Jordan cope with humanitarian and economic needs. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak poses significant risks to the program implementation. The authorities have implemented measures to help contain the impact of the pandemic; however, adjustments to the program modalities might be necessary considering the rapidly changing circumstances. Donor support through budget grants and concessional financing will be critical to help Jordan cope with the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak and the Syrian refugee crisis and to support program objectives.

Following a period of robust growth during 2000–09 supported by a favorable external environment, economic activity slowed sharply. Jordan is also facing risks from a further deterioration in its terms of trade and unrest in neighboring countries. Executive Directors have commended the authorities’ track record of prudent and effective macroeconomic management. Directors have also welcomed the fiscal tightening in the 2012 budget and the authorities’ three-year fiscal reform agenda.

Book The Global Findex Database 2017

Download or read book The Global Findex Database 2017 written by Asli Demirguc-Kunt and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.
