Book excerpt: While keeping the scope and essential thrust of the original book unchanged, this third edition has been updated to reflect the latest technology. For instance, important revisions have been made to a few chapters, while one chapter has been eliminated and replaced with a newer chapter dealing with recent developments in digital and consumer electronics that are relevant to laboratory instrumentation. The authors hope the readers of this text will be more confident with instrumentation and more willing to experiment with it, as well as be able to appreciate the possible ways that electronic instrumentation can be used in their work. The book was written with the undergraduate in speech and hearing sciences uppermost in mind. Instead of detailed information about individual pieces of instrumentation, a more basic and broad descriptive approach has been used. Throughout, examples have been provided regarding how certain pieces of equipment can be used in the clinic or laboratory. One or more step-by-step exercises are included at the end of certain chapters to help students obtain hands-on experience and equipment flowcharts help reinforce the exercise. Students who complete this book will have a basic understanding of the major pieces of instrumentation in the hearing and speech clinic/laboratory.

Book Measuring Voice Speech and Swallowing in the Clinic and Laboratory

Download or read book Measuring Voice Speech and Swallowing in the Clinic and Laboratory written by Christy L. Ludlow and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Voice, Speech, and Swallowing in the Clinic and Laboratory provides a definitive reference and text for methods of measurement of voice, speech, and swallowing functioning and disorders. It was developed for measurement courses in speech-language pathology graduate and doctoral programs and is also an essential reference for practitioners or anyone who needs to make quantitative assessments of the systems involved. The goal of this text is to provide basic information on the instruments and measures commonly used for assessing and treating persons with disorders of voice, speech, and swallowing for clinical practice, research studies, and conducting clinical trials. New developments in electrical and magnetic stimulation for noninvasive stimulation of nerves, muscles, and the brain are provided for augmenting treatment benefits for persons with voice, speech, and swallowing disorders. Other new techniques included are electromyography, articulography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, functional MRI, fNIRS, DTI, and transcranial direct current stimulation for treatment applications. The text includes methods for recording and analyzing speech, acoustics, imaging and kinematics of vocal tract motion, air pressure, airflow, respiration, clinical evaluation of voice and swallowing disorders, and functional and structural neuroimaging. Many of the methods are applicable for use in clinical practice and clinical research. Key Features: More than 250 full-color imagesSummary tables to guide selection of instruments and measures for various applicationsEach chapter begins and ends with an overview and conclusion for review of contentAppendices of measurement standards Clinical investigators and clinicians wanting to measure voice, speech, and swallowing functions for clinical documentation will benefit from this book, as will students and professors. Measuring Voice, Speech, and Swallowing in the Clinic and Laboratorypulls together the necessary information on methods of measurement from different disciplines and sources into one convenient resource. Information on measurement in the fields of voice, speech, and swallowing is now readily available for training doctoral students and guidance of clinicians incorporating instrumental assessment into their practice.

Book Instrumentation for Audiology and Hearing Science

Download or read book Instrumentation for Audiology and Hearing Science written by Shlomo Silman and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the array and complexity of instrumentation available to audiologists and hearing scientists is important to students, beginning clinicians, and even seasoned professionals. The second edition of Instrumentation for Audiology and Hearing Science: Theory and Practice is a comprehensive and accessible look at instrumentation used in these fields for research and clinical purposes. The expert authors introduce the laws of physics as they relate to audiology and hearing science and explain a range of concepts in electronics directly related to instrumentation used in audiology and hearing science, such as filtering and immittance (involving admittance and impedance), explain the fundamental instrumentation concepts in mathematics, physics, and electronics in a systematic manner including only the necessary formulae and basic scientific principles. This unique professional text presents the fundamentals of the evolution of communication systems from analog to digital, including such concepts as digital signals, sound resolution, sampling, quantization and their applications to current technology such as video calls and noise canceling head phones. In addition, the authors comprehensively cover calibration of test and research equipment and stimuli used in audiology and hearing science. They also clearly describe elements of electronics and digital technology as they apply to our everyday lives and experiences, as well as to the fields of audiology and hearing sciences. New to the Second Edition * New chapters on amplification, assistive listening devices, and vestibular assessment (electronystagmography and videonystagmography), geared toward audiology and hearing science students and professionals * Extensive reorganization for a smoother flow of information * Expanded focus on evidence-based practice * Informed by the authors’ teaching, research, and clinical experiences, the original chapters have either been eliminated or completely updated to reflect current scientific and clinical theories * Accompanying videos for the construction of direct- and alternating-current electrical circuits, as well as the construction of high-pass, low-pass, and band-pass filters

Book Manual of Clinical Phonetics
