Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting: A Treatise on the Care of Timber Lands and the Restoration of Denuded Wood-Lands on Plains and Montains for if we really will preserve our natural or wild forests- and this is undoubtedly a much better and cheaper policy than to continue destroying them, and to latter raise, at an enormous cost and loss of time, artificial forests- we have to care for our woods just as fully as the artificial forests in the European countries are treated; for in the preservation of forests it makes no difference at all whether they are originated by nature or by human art, because both are subject to the same dangers and injuries. Unless the natural forests are managed systematically, we cannot but expect that the reparation of damages done to a forest either by accidents or elementary forces, or by the natural course of tree life, will take as many centuries as it would require decades for this purpose, if we assist nature in its regenerating endeavors through the means suggested by scientific forestry. The condition in which our forests are now, is not such as to warrant us in "pooh-poohing" the idea of looking for instruction in this matter to the European nations, and to only glance at their methods of treating forests, because we have a different form of government (see Report of the N. Y. Forest Commission, 1886, page 67.), or because "the entire condition of things here differs so materially from that in the old world." (See Report of the Forest Commission, 1887, page 17.) Certainly there is a great difference between our government and that of most of the European nations, and politico-economical matters are often treated here differently from what they are there; but this does not affect the question of preserving to the succeeding generations the natural resources of a country necessary for the welfare of its inhabitants. Book Tree Planting and Schools of Forestry in Europe

Download or read book Tree Planting and Schools of Forestry in Europe written by Birdsey Grant Northrop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree Planting, and Schools of Forestry in Europe: With Other Papers The literature of forestry, already large, is now rapidly increasing by the cooperation of professors in forest schools, and government ofiicials specially commissioned to investi gate difi'erent branches of the subject, and many other writers. A German catalogue gives the titles of volumes on forestry issued prior to 1842, and the titles of 650 works pub lished in the six years prior to 1876. On an average, over one hundred new books on forestry appear annually in the German language. One of the Spanish Commissioners to the Centennial Exposition, Senor Morera, published a list of volumes on forestry in the Spanish language alone. Little attention has been given in this country to sylvicnl ture. Nature has been wonderfully bountiful in the magnifi cent forests which once adorned this land, but our people have been recklessly prodigal in wasting this rich inheritance. As if they were the enemies of man, forests have been con sumed without a thought of renewing them, and fire has been made to help the axe in destroying what it required ages to produce. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Forestry: Concerning Also the Financial Aspect of Afforestation In the following pages I have endevoured to write such a treatise on Forestry as will be found of universal use to Landowners, Land Agents, and all Students of the science of Forestry. It is very necessary to realise that a complete knowledge of the correct practice of Forestry can only be obtained by approaching the subject from a scientific attitude. There are many able foresters whose only school has been that of the lonely woodlands, but their ability is, nevertheless, the result of an unconscious scientific study. There is, however, a species of humanity - a class of self-styled experts - who advertise as being practical authorities on Forestry matters, and who boast that they eschew all that is scientific, but whose only passport is, in reality, that of garrulous ignorance, and an overweening confidence in their own inability. I cannot too strongly warn my readers against attaching any importance to the remarks or advice of such men as these. Now, whereas in the cultivation of field crops, a considerable degree of proficiency may be acquired in an empiric manner, by merely watching the results of ones own practice, and without availing oneself of the lessons learnt by others, yet, in the case of Forestry, such would be impossible, for the life of mankind is far too short to admit of acquiring a complete knowledge of Forestry without studying the results of the actions of others, both of the present and past generations, and endeavouring to draw correct conclusions from observations so made.
