This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction in Chemical Analysis (Qualitative) The rapid sale of the first English Edition of this Work has justified the anticipation of the illustrious Chemist, at whose suggestion I undertook to place it at the service of the English student of chemistry. The numerous commendations it received from the press, I may be allowed to say, in my capacity of Editor, it fully deserves. The present edition is almost a new work, so numerous and important are the additions and alterations which are so incorporated into its structure that they could not be pro duced separately. It represents the fourth German edition. Several new works on the same subject, of various pretensions, have made their appearance in this country since this was published - they have not retarded, on the contrary they seem rather to have facilitated its sale. Download or read book A System of Instruction in Quantitative Chemical Analysis written by C. Remigius Fresenius and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Instruction in Quantitative Chemical Analysis: From the Last Whatever has been proposed, either in this country or on the Continent, to facilitate the path of analysis, has been tested, and, when found sound and practical, has been introduced in the proper place. Every doubtful point has been rigidly subjected to repeated experiments, errors corrected and faults amended, and many new processes added from the Author's ample experience in his own laboratory." Among the additions there introduced, the volumetrical methods of determining the constituents of commercial articles were pointed out as particularly important for economizing time, and assisting in every way the practical chemist. The entire work has been re-cast, considerably simplified, and almost re-written. New matter has been introduced to the extent of one-fourth of the whole volume. Many of the processes the best then known, but rendered obsolete by the progress of the science - have been replaced by others more certain, simple, and efficient; and this is particularly the case with the volumetrical processes. Among other changes, I may specify the analytical processes for clays, soils, cast iron, atmospheric air, and lead ores. This work on Quantitative Analysis, although in itself complete, may be regarded as a sequel to the Author's Qualitative Analysis - a work which has been found of the highest value - nay, almost indispensable - to the student of chemistry, whatever other books on the subject he may possess. As a guide to Analytical Chemistry, the merits of the present volume are of the highest order. The arrangement is simple, methodical, and consecutive; the theoretical explanations are appropriate, clear, and intelligible; the language plain, and the directness and honesty of purpose, together with the just appreciation of the labors of others displayed throughout, must commend it to every one engaged in studying, teaching, or practising Chemistry; and I have great pleasure in being the medium of presenting it to the English public. Book A Laboratory Guide in Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Guide in Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by Horace Lemuel Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide in Qualitative Chemical Analysis The method of instruction presented in this little book has been developed by the author in teaching the subject during the past fourteen years. The course differs materially from those usually employed, and has given satisfaction because of its tendency to obviate thoughtless and mechanical work on the part of the student - facts which may be offered as an excuse for adding another to the great number of works on qualitative analysis. The general plan of Part I, which is applied wherever it would not be too cumbersome, consists in giving directions for analyses without mentioning the results, and in requiring the student to determine for himself the results of the operations. Following this system, the student almost invariably performs his preliminary experiments with great care, because he recognizes their object and importance. This is especially the case if the student understands that, in the analysis of unknown mixtures, he will not be allowed to use any tables or abbreviated schemes of analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for Qualitative Chemical Analysis In adapting an elementary course of chemical analysis to this purpose the accompanying tables seemed peculiarly suited. Whilst compact, they are sufficiently explicit, and the summary view of the general course of qualitative analysis, and of the classification of compounds according to the properties relied upon for their detection, affords a thread, as it were, around which chemical facts may crystallize as they accumulate. For details of properties, &c., in addition to instruction in the laboratory, the student is constantly referred to some one of the manuals of analytical chemistry placed in the laboratory for this purpose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Chemistry: The Principles of Qualitative Analysis The second part is devoted to methods of Analysis. Here he is first instructed in the properties of a few of the constituents of common salts, and is taught methods for their separation or identification in presence of one another. If he goes no further than this he will at least have learnt what chemical analysis means. He afterwards proceeds to extend his knowledge, till at the end of the course he will be able to analyse any mixture of ordinary inorganic substances. The analytical part is to a great extent shorn of directions for manipulation, as well as of details which are not relevant to the immediate object of the experiment. According to my experience these are not only of no use, but are a positive hindrance to the apprehension of the facts to be acquired. Manipulation can only be learnt properly under personal instruction by a competent teacher, and more will be accomplished by letting the beginner see once for all how a thing is to be done than by whole volumes of printed directions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Chemical Analysis: Qualitative and Quantitative The consequence of this method is the stereotyped product so painfully familiar to all who are engaged in teaching or examining, namely, a certain number of regulation tests, arranged with a semblance of method in the everlasting three columns, headed Experiment, Observation, Inference, followed by a more or less slovenly copy of the time-honoured tables. The valuelessness of such a written-out record must be patent to all teachers, and yet we still continue to accept it in lieu of a few real notes, less quickly and easily examined no doubt, because less stereotyped, but of infinitely more value to the student himself. Download or read book A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by McGregory McGregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis An examination of most of the works on the subject of qualitative analysis will show that they belong in one of two general classes which may be described as follows: first, the exhaustive treatise, of which such a work as that of Fresenius will serve as an example; second, the abbreviated treatise, often very much abbreviated, in which the author attempts to cover the whole work in a few lessons. For graduate students, or for the better class of beginners who are able to devote the most of their time to the study, books of the first class may be invaluable. But the great majority of the students in our colleges do not become chemists. They study analytical chemistry at the most but a short time, and what they acquire is, and should be, to a considerable extent, of disciplinary value to them. To the great majority of our students, therefore, the exhaustive treatise, especially at the beginning of their course, is a means of confusion rather than an intelligent guide. The second class of text-books is also likely to fail with the average student, since it teaches him to analyze an unknown substance in such a purely mechanical way that the actual knowledge of the subject acquired is small, and the disciplinary value of the work becomes a minimum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Qualitative Chemical Analysis, Vol. 1: With Special Consideration of the Application of the Laws of Equilibrium and of the Modern Theories of Solution IN venturing to add another book on Qualitative Chemical Analysis to the long list of publications on this subject, the author has been moved chiefly by the often expressed wish of students and friends to have his lectures on qualitative analysis rendered available for reference and for a wider circle of instruction. Parts I and II of the present book embody these lectures in the form to which they have developed in the course of the last six teen years, since, 'in 1894, the teaching of analytical chemistry, along the lines followed, was first suggested by Ostwald's pioneer Wissenschaftliche Grundlagen der Analytischen Chemie. Book An Introduction to Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by Delos Fall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Qualitative Chemical Analysis This manual is designed to impart but little chemical truth directly. It aims rather to lead the student to gain that truth himself as nearly as possible at first hand and as a product of his own thinking. This he is enabled to do, without waste of time, guided as he is by the suggestions of the book and the constant prevision of the live teacher. The student is first thoroughly grounded in the fundamental ideas of chemistry before he goes on to use those ideas as tools in the practical work of qualitative analysis. If he gains a proper conception of the relation of the atom to the molecule, of valence; if he masters the principles of nomenclature and the chemical equation as set forth in chapters ii. and iii., he will certainly acquire his chemistry with facility and clearness. That it produces strong, accurate, enthusiastic, and independent students the author has demonstrated in his own classes through several years. For the sake of emphasizing what is expressed elsewhere, the author would insist upon regular recitations, at stated times, upon the laboratory work, in which there shall be full and searching discussion of the results obtained, of errors committed, how these errors have arisen and how controlled. Comparison of results obtained and informal discussion of the difficulties to be met with beget an interest and enthusiasm for the work which is invaluable. Moreover, a few experiments fully reported and discussed are of much greater value than many experiments with little time given to such discussion.
