Download or read book Advanced Problems in Bridge Construction written by G. Creazza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the most modern and topical problems of bridge design. The topics presented allow to tackle both theoretical-analytical as well as technical-constructive aspects of the design problem, pointing out how in the case of bridges, specifically for long span bridges, the two aspects are absolutely inseparable. In modern bridges, reasons of technical and economic feasibility oblige an extreme parceling of the construction process, with the consequent need to revise, with respect to the past, both design concepts as well as the theoretical apparatus of analysis that governs it. All this can clearly be derived from reading the present volume, in which the different contributions stress theoretical and technical questions of particular interest and topicality, without claiming to approach them systematically, but offering clear procedural rules and trend indications. With reference to the theoretical approach, some of particular importance are reviewed, such as the possibility of using limit analysis, the simplification of the design process for bridges, durability, and computer aided design. For what concerns the bridge typologies and the corresponding constructive problems, the emphasis is mostly on the ones still in an evolutionary phase, that is long span suspended/stayed bridges and cantilever built bridges with prefabricated segments.

Download or read book Urban Sustainability and Energy Management of Cities for Improved Health and Well Being written by González-Lezcano, Roberto Alonso and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental challenges such as climate change, rapid urbanization, and human influence on the environment continue to grow. Many of these resulting risks lead to diseases and negative impacts on health and quality of life. It is now essential to develop more sustainable and healthy environments with greater focus on prevention by targeting the root causes of disease. Urban communities comprise a high concentration of services, consumption, and waste and represent an unsustainable pattern of urbanization that accelerates the decline of global ecosystems services rather than supporting them through the compensatory contributions of peri-urban and rural areas. By focusing on reducing environmental and social risk factors, almost a quarter of the global burden of disease can be avoided through better health promotion strategies and improved prevention and hygiene measures. Urban Sustainability and Energy Management of Cities for Improved Health and Well-Being highlights the interdisciplinary connections between the environment and human health, focusing on new ideas and suggestions for promoting both sustainable development and human health and well-being. It creates a new approach to the analysis of human impacts on the natural environment and, conversely, determines how the environment can modulate human lifestyles and health. Furthermore, this book explores opportunities and challenges urban communities face as they seek to become sustainable systems embedded in their diverse and complex social and environmental contexts. Covering topics such as affordable housing, ecological waste materials, and urban health, this premier reference source is an essential resource for environmentalists, civil engineers, government officials, architects, libraries, students and educators of higher education, urban planners, researchers, and academicians.
Download or read book Design Examples Design Examples for the 1996 FIP Recommendations Practical Design of Structural Concrete written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1996 FIP Recommendations Practical Design of Structural Concretewere finally published by SETO in September 1999. They had been developed based on the 1990 CEB-FIP Model Code. The main objective of this Bulletin is now to demonstrate by practical examples the application of these recommendations, and especially to illustrate the use of strut-and-tie models for designing discontinuity regions in concrete structures. These examples represent also a continuation of the 1990 FIP Handbook on Practical Design that had been based on the former (1984) version of the recommendations. Most of the examples are recently built existing structures. Although some of them may be considered as quite important, the chosen examples are by no means exceptional. The technical report does not deal with the discussion of aesthetic or general conceptual aspects. On the contrary, the main aim is to treat particular design aspects by selecting local regions of the chosen structures, that are then designed and detailed following the design principles and specifications proposed in the 1996 FIP Recommendations mentioned above. The document is believed to be of interest to all engaged in the design of structural concrete. It hopefully supports the use of more consistent design and detailing tools like strut-and-tie models.

Download or read book 6th International Conference on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture written by The Getty Conservation Institute and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1991-02-28 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 14-19, 1990, the 6th International Conference on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture was held in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sponsored by the GCI, the Museum of New Mexico State Monuments, ICCROM, CRATerre-EAG, and the National Park Service, under the aegis of US/ICOMOS, the event was organized to promote the exchange of ideas, techniques, and research findings on the conservation of earthen architecture. Presentations at the conference covered a diversity of subjects, including the historic traditions of earthen architecture, conservation and restoration, site preservation, studies in consolidation and seismic mitigation, and examinations of moisture problems, clay chemistry, and microstructures. In discussions that focused on the future, the application of modern technologies and materials to site conservation was urged, as was using scientific knowledge of existing structures in the creation of new, low-cost, earthen architecture housing.

Download or read book Model Code 2010 Final draft written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of MC2010 are to (a) serve as a basis for future codes for concrete structures, and (b) present new developments with regard to concrete structures, structural materials and new ideas in order to achieve optimum behaviour. MC2010 includes the whole life cycle of a concrete structure, from design and construction to conservation (assessment, maintenance, strengthening) and dismantlement, in one code for buildings, bridges and other civil engineering structures. Design is largely based on performance requirements. The chapter on materials is extended with new types of concrete and reinforcement (such as fibres and non-metallic reinforcements). The fib Model Code 2010 also gives corresponding explanations in a separate column of the document. Additionally, MC2010 is supported by background documents that have already been (or will soon be) published in fib bulletins and journal articles. MC2010 is now the most comprehensive code on concrete structures, including their complete life cycle: conceptual design, dimensioning, construction, conservation and dismantlement.
