Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutional Ethics In this work, the terms "justice" and "grace" (charity) have been used for two reasons: first, to distinguish the process of evolution in man from evolution in the other orders of creation; second, because of the historical significance of these terms. The process of development of man in institutional life is similar rather than identical with the processes of development in inorganic nature, in plant-life and in the lower forms of animal life. There is an external similarity in these processes that often leads to their identification. The inherent activity of the inorganic world often displays itself as a "superabundance of energy." In the plant-world there is a degree of individuality shown in the fact of the preservation of the species; but apparently, there is a reckless expenditure of the life of the individual plant. In the animal-world, the animals below man have sufficient selfactivity and persistence to retain their space relations, and to form in consciousness a world conditioned upon feeling and sense-perception, without the higher form of reflection and reason; there is also in the animal-world a sacrifice of the individual animal, but a preservation of the species. This process of the sacrifice of the life of one for the good of others becomes in man a conscious process of self-making. And only as there is a voluntariness in the act that indicates a free self-determining personality are the terms just and charitable applied to acts. The rst part is given by the two rst chapters introducing the issue of validity and facticity in law. The second part (Chapters 3, 4 and 5) is the core of this study and tries to present a theory based on a speci c view about language and social practice. The third part deal with the issue of value judgments and views about morality and consists of Chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 should nally serve as epilogue. In the rst chapter a discussion is started about the relationship between law and power, seen as a presupposition for an assessment of the nature of law. As a matter of fact, as has been remarked, “general theories of law struggle to do justice to the 1 multiple dualities of the law”. Indeed, law has a “dual nature”: it is a fact, but it also a norm, a sort of ideal entity. Law is sanction, but it is also discourse. It is effectivity, or facticity, but it is also a vehicle of principles among which the central one is justice. But this duality is not only a phenomenological, or a matter of justi cation and implementation as two separate moments.

The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and approved the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda officially came into force. These goals cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals comprehensively addresses the SDGs in an integrated way. The Encyclopedia encompasses 17 volumes, each one devoted to one of the 17 SDGs. It argues that the virtues of character require institutions, while good institutions enable persons to live together virtuously. Although virtue ethics and political philosophy are rich and sophisticated philosophical traditions, there has been an unfortunate divergence, in theory and practice, between the virtues of character and the virtues of institutions. This book has two primary purposes. First, it reorients political philosophy around the concept of the good life. To do so, the author addresses the problem of political authority from a virtue ethics perspective. He also considers whether a political theory oriented around the good life is compatible with Rawls's notion of reasonable pluralism. Second, the book explains the relationship between the virtues of institutions and the virtues of character. The author shows how institutions support the development and exercise of the virtues of character, while examining specific other-regarding virtues such as justice and friendship. The Authority of Virtue will appeal to scholars and advanced students working in virtue ethics, social and political philosophy, ancient philosophy, and political theory.
