Book Critical Genre Analysis

Download or read book Critical Genre Analysis written by Vijay K. Bhatia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genre theory has focused primarily on the analysis of generic constructs, with increasing attention to and emphasis on the contexts in which such genres are produced, interpreted, and used to achieve objectives, often giving the impression as if producing genres is an end in itself, rather than a means to an end. The result of this focus is that there has been very little attention paid to the ultimate outcomes of these genre-based discursive activities, which are more appropriately viewed as academic, institutional, organizational, and professional actions and practices, which are invariably non-discursive, though often achieved through discursive means. It was this objective in mind that the book develops an approach to a more critical and deeper understanding of interdiscursive professional voices and actions. Critical Genre Analysis as a theory of discursive performance is thus an attempt to be as objective as possible, rigorous in analytical endeavour, using a multiperspective and multidimensional methodological framework taking into account interdiscursive aspects of genre construction to make it increasingly explanatory to demystify discursive performance in a range of professional contexts.

Book Promoting conscious and active learning and aging how to face current and future challenges

Download or read book Promoting conscious and active learning and aging how to face current and future challenges written by Albertina Lima de Oliveira and published by Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra / Coimbra University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union has committed itself to the goal of extending the healthy lifespan of its citizens by two years under the 2020 strategy. This book brings together a diverse range of overviews, reflections and empirical research in the area which arise from the contribution of professionals and researchers from different fields of knowledge. Together they undertake to suggest possible pathways and to inspire action in all those who see themselves as participants in the processes and endeavour of building a society which espouses active, dignified, healthy and mindful aging. The background perspective which informs this project – that which is commonly referred to as Lifelong Education – calls for an integrated approach from diverse areas of knowledge in the service of building a more enlightened society: less susceptible to the influence of prejudices, enriched with human beings driven by ideals of health, justice, solidarity and nobility of spirit. Life must be understood as a totality that takes meaning from all its phases and which stimulates the vast potential that human beings, including older people and society at large, with its various systems, have for the common good. Let us face the challenge of building a new humanism, placing human beings and the sustainability of all forms of life at the centre of the dynamic process of change!

Book Students Writing in the University

Download or read book Students Writing in the University written by Carys Jones and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-01-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to raise awareness of the underlying complexities concerning student writing in the universities. The authors address a series of theoretical as well as practical questions regarding the literacies required of students in Higher Education, from the perspective of both students themselves and of their tutors. The research described here intends to move beyond the narrow confines of current policy debates and the quick fix solutions of writing manuals, to explore the epistemological, cultural, historical and theoretical bases of such writing. Issues addressed include the nature of competing epistemologies that underlie the writing process and the varying degrees of explicitness about what academic writing entails; ways of challenging the institutional marginalisation of academic writing as teaching, learning, and research practice; what counts as knowledge and how far it is mediated by the rhetorical conventions of one culture; to what extent the challenging of such rhetorical conventions is itself a crucial epistemological issue. Writing, in this volume, then, is addressed in terms of academic literacy practices involving relations of power, issues of identity and theories of knowledge.
