Book excerpt: This wide-ranging collection of inspirational poetry and prose offers readers solace, perspective, and the courage to persevere. In times of personal hardship or collective anxiety, words have the power to provide comfort, meaning, and hope. The past year has seen a resurgence of poetry and inspiring quotes—posted on social media, appearing on bestseller lists, shared from friend to friend. Honoring this communal spirit, How Lovely the Ruins is a timeless collection of both classic and contemporary poetry and short prose that can be of help in difficult times—selections that offer wisdom and purpose, and that allow us to step out of our current moment to gain a new perspective on the world around us as well as the world within. The poets and writers featured in this book represent the diversity of our country as well as voices beyond our borders, including Maya Angelou, W. H. Auden, Danez Smith, Rumi, Emily Dickinson, Naomi Shihab Nye, Alice Walker, Adam Zagajewski, Langston Hughes, Wendell Berry, Anna Akhmatova, Yehuda Amichai, and Robert Frost. And the book opens with a stunning foreword by Elizabeth Alexander, whose poem “Praise Song for the Day,” delivered at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, ushered in an era of optimism. In works celebrating our capacity for compassion, our patriotism, our right to protest, and our ability to persevere, How Lovely the Ruins is a beacon that illuminates our shared humanity, allowing us connection in a fractured world. Book excerpt: I discovered many years ago that writing poetry is therapeutic for my anxious mind. Scribbling down words and rearranging them to form a poem, enables my unruly thoughts to escape from my head. This little book contains a selection of thought provoking, but ultimately, uplifting poems, composed by the author. That's me! The poems are complimented by the true story of how I developed my writing skills. First attempts in those early days were filled with fun and laughter for my family and friends. As I journeyed through life and experienced the highs and lows of living on this planet, my poetry became more inspirational and I am told, helpful to others struggling with bereavement, anxiety or just coping with today's fast pace of living. I hope you enjoy reading Take A Walk Through My Mind and perhaps will be inspired to put pen to paper yourself. Go For It!

Download or read book Rumi s Book of Poetry written by Rumi and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enchanting poet, an insightful scholar, and a noted jurist, Rumi is a historical figure whose work has persisted over centuries. The universal nature of his writing has managed to transcend national and cultural boundaries and his poems have been cemented in the curricula and imaginations of people around the world. Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, more commonly known as Rumi, was born in 1207. The exact date of his birth is unknown, and the suspected date varies depending on the historian. Scholars have had better luck narrowing down his place of birth. Rumi was either born in Wakhsh, which was located in present-day Tajikistan or in Balkh, present day Afghanistan. His father was a theologian and a jurist, a man whose work would arguably impact the course of young Rumi's life. It is difficult to separate the man from the myth when outlining Rumi's family background. There are claims that Rumi's family was descended from the Caliph Abu Bakr, one of the Prophet Muhammad's trusted advisors. Historians have largely classified this a myth along with other claims that tie the family's lineage to royalty.
