Download or read book Inside Man written by K. J. Parker and published by Tordotcom. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K. J. Parker returns to the amoral world of Prosper’s Demon with a wry, sardonic novella that flips the eternal, rule-governed battle between men and demons on its head. An anonymous representative of the Devil, once a high-ranking Duke of Hell and now a committed underachiever, has spent the last forever of an eternity leading a perfectly tedious existence distracting monks from their liturgical devotions. It’s interminable, but he prefers it that way, now that he’s been officially designated by Downstairs as “fragile.” No, he won’t elaborate. All that changes when he finds himself ensnared, along with a sadistic exorcist, in a labyrinthine plot to subvert the very nature of Good and Evil. In such a circumstance, sympathy for the Devil is practically inevitable. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: There's that joke, where the ghost doesn't go to the party because he has no body to go with? Well, I'm in no position to find it funny. Nowadays, I'm caught in a spirit limbo, unable to touch, and my only entertainment is to watch lovers together. Like this cute couple Jake and Benjy, having a few problems with their relationship. Nothing some honest talk and good loving wouldn't put right, I reckon. I follow them home, led selfishly by curiosity, mischief, or maybe just loneliness. But I stay around for far more personal reasons.
Download or read book Prosper s Demon written by K. J. Parker and published by Tordotcom. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As if Deadpool had slipped into the body of the Witcher Geralt." —The New York Times In the pitch dark, witty fantasy novella Prosper's Demon, K. J. Parker deftly creates a world with vivid, unbending rules, seething with demons, broken faith, and worse men. In a botched demonic extraction, they say the demon feels it ten times worse than the man. But they don’t die, and we do. Equilibrium. The unnamed and morally questionable narrator is an exorcist with great follow-through and few doubts. His methods aren’t delicate but they’re undeniably effective: he’ll get the demon out—he just doesn’t particularly care what happens to the person. Prosper of Schanz is a man of science, determined to raise the world’s first philosopher-king, reared according to the purest principles. Too bad he’s demonically possessed. Download or read book Inside Man written by Mihnea Moldoveanu and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside Man presents readers with an exercise in modeling human ways of being—thinking, feeling, acting. This book does not merely introduce models, but also attempts to teach modeling and to produce, within the reader, the predispositions and attitudes of the modeler: a distance from the individual whose behavior is modeled, an engineering approach to the model-building process, a (self)-critical approach to the model testing and elaboration process, and a pedagogical and a therapeutic approach to enacting and communicating models. Author Mihnea C. Moldoveanu makes the process and the phenomenon of modeling transparent and explicit, and clarifies the reasons for which modeling human behavior has to be an interactive process between the modeler and the modeled. This perspective situates Inside Man at the intersection of analytical and computational thinking about rationality, reasoning, choice and thinking, and the tradition of action science and action research.

Download or read book Inside Man written by Tracy Cooper-Posey and published by Stories Rule Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s her job to protect Cain…if she doesn’t kill him herself. Agata Kelsey is an MIT Engineering Honors graduate, speaks six languages fluently, and a CIA operative with no time for fools. As punishment for a job gone wrong, she is assigned to the Paris-based security detail guarding Cain Ishmael Warren, the wild, uncontrollable son of former Vice President Warren. Cain Warren resents his security detail with every shred of his rotten, irredeemable soul, especially the most recent addition, a lightweight piece of fluff with a mouth and an attitude. He ditches them at every opportunity, except she’s hard to shake off. When trouble arrives, Cain is shocked because it’s nothing to do with him. An old enemy of Agata’s puts them both in his sights, forcing Agata to run--and take Cain with her on a chase across France and into the Alps wilderness, with the Kobra’s venomous Gavriil Zima far too close behind them... This romantic thriller is the second book in the Project Kobra series. 1.0: Hunting The Kobra 2.0: Inside Man 3.0: Heart Strike …and more to come! ____ Praise for Inside Man With some authors you know that you are going to like whatever they may produce, and Tracy is one of them, she could make a shopping list interesting! Agata and Cain really steal the show. Fantastic story, especially when you like a kick-ass lady and dark, bad boy persona guy. Brilliant read. Thanks for that Tracy. Well done on book 100. The reader will feel the chill of crisp snow, and harsh conditions of the mountains, even the bone-crushing exhaustion as Agata and Cain fight to survive. Plan to sit for a while. This is not a read a little, walk away for a while, read a little more. This is a "sit down, get comfortable, and don't plan to move." Tracy Cooper Posey once again proves why she is a master at the Romantic Thriller genre. Tracy Cooper Posey writes incredibly strong, intelligent female characters who shine in this series. This had to be one of my favorites of Tracy's numerous works. I haven't read all 100, but I'm getting close to it, and I have yet to be disappointed! You always learn new, interesting and insightful things when you read Tracy’s books, her research is amazing! What a whirlwind adventure! I never saw that coming and now I'm stuck in another series! Awesome!

Download or read book The Man in the Middle written by Timothy S. Goeglein and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timothy Goeglein spent nearly eight years in the White House as President George W. Bush's key point of contact to American conservatives and the faith-based world and was frequently profiled in the national news media. But when a plagiarism scandal prompted his resignation, Goeglein chose not to dodge it but confront it, and was shown remarkable grace by the president. In fact, Bush showed more concern for Goeglein and his family than any personal political standing. So begins The Man in the Middle, Goeglein's unique insider account of why he believes most of the 43rd president's in-office decisions were made for the greater good, and how many of those decisions could serve as a blueprint for the emergence of a thoughtful, confident conservatism. From a fresh perspective, Goeglein gives behind-the-scenes accounts of key events during that historic two-term administration, reflecting on what was right and best about the Bush years. He was in Florida for the 2000 election recount, at the White House on 9/11, and watched Bush become a reluctant but effective wartime president. Goeglein, now the vice president with Focus on the Family, also looks back at how Bush handled matters like stem cell research, faith-based initiatives, the emergence of the Values Voters, the nominations of both Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito-in which Goeglein had a direct role-and debates over the definition of marriage. In all, The Man in the Middle backs historians who view the legacy of President George W. Bush in a favorable light, recognizing his conservative ideas worth upholding in order to better shape our nation and change the world.

Book excerpt: “An insider of the European Commission since the late 1980s, Marco Buti is a unique guide through the two crises of the 21st century.” - Giuliano Amato, former Prime Minister of Italy “Marco Buti and I have not always agreed on issues of economic policy. But I cannot think of somebody more qualified to tell us about the travails of Europe since the Great Financial Crisis. He was there all along.” - Olivier Blanchard, Senior Fellow at Peterson Institute for International Economics “This collection of VoXEU contributions shows how history is made. Marco Buti, a man inside the vortex of the making of European monetary history, produced and published a steady stream of reflections, analysis and reform proposals on VoxEU." - Beatrice Weder Di Mauro, President of the Centre for Economic Policy Research “To go from point A to point B in Europe is rarely a straight line. Actually, trying to take a straight line is often the best way not to get to destination.” This is one of the lessons drawn by Marco Buti, one of the very few top policy makers who went through the fi nancial and the sovereign debt crises and, lately, the pandemic crisis, which plagued the European Union over the past twelve years. This book, which brings together his real time input to the economic and policy debate, traces the intellectual journey leading to the design and implementation under duress of diffi cult policies and controversial reforms. His contribution is the graphic demonstration of Jean Monnet’s dictum that Europe will be forged in crises and will be the outcome of the responses to those crises. The book explains the analytical and empirical foundations of European policy choices that involved a delicate balance between economic, institutional and political considerations. What emerges is a new compass that helps understand the policy strategy the EU has adopted to fi ght the economic fallout of the pandemic.

Bent is a jazz pianist living gig-to-gig in a dark city of dead-ends. With no family, and no friends, he has resigned himself to a life of quiet desolation. That is, until the night he meets the enigmatic Leonard Fry. After accepting an invitation to his countryside mansion, where Leonard resides on his own, Bent is offered a deal of Faustian proportions. “There is a room in this house. There’s only one way in and one way out . . . There’s one lock on the door, and only one key to that lock. Now, what I’m going to ask may seem strange to you. I don’t necessarily need you to understand, but what I do need is for you to agree to help me.” Disillusioned with his life of excess, Leonard has decided to explore the final frontier of his existence, the margins of his mind, by locking himself in a small room in his mansion for a year. In exchange for Bent’s assistance, everything Leonard owns will be Bent’s for the duration of his self-imposed imprisonment. But there are two sides to every locked door. As the days go by, and Leonard’s true intentions become clear, Bent will find himself venturing beyond the one terrifying boundary from which he can’t be sure he’ll ever return . . . the boundary of his own sanity.

Book excerpt: The Inside Man is the culmination of more than seventeen years of groundbreaking, meticulous, and exhaustive research into the life of this least known or understood of the "Big Five" who built the western end of the first transcontinental railroad. Drawn from original sources most of which have hitherto been inaccessible or ignored by previous chroniclers-thousands of pages of handwritten letters, telegrams, accounts from scores of newspapers archived around the country, including biographical and historical works-are brought to bear in this monumental account. More than the biography of one individual, this masterful account weaves within the narrative the many forces and competing issues faced by Mark Hopkins and his associates as well as the culture and mores of late nineteenth century California, and their very personal struggles and conflicts.
