Book Inside the Over the Counter Market in the UK

Download or read book Inside the Over the Counter Market in the UK written by Tom G. Wilmot and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1985 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive treatment of the over-the-counter market in the United Kingdom, beginning with its inception in the early 1970s and tracing its development to the present day. Armed with the full understanding of the market provided by this valuable handbook, investors will find that the OTC offers them tremendous opportunities. Of particular interest to them, therefore, will be the clear and intelligible examination of the workings of the market, which gives information on risk assessment, procedures for dealing, costs of buying and selling shares, regulation, and the influence of the Business Expansion Scheme on the OTC. The dangers for investors on the OTC are not denied, however. The book concludes with a look at the reasons for the phenomenal sucess of the OTC in the United States and predicts a similarly bright future for the OTC in the United Kingdom if it is allowed to develop along similar lines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth history of how finance remade everyday life in Thatcher's Britain. Are We Rich Yet? tells the story of the financialization of British society. During the 1980s and 1990s, financial markets became part of daily life for many Britons as the practice of investing moved away from the offices of the City of London, onto Britain’s high streets, and into people’s homes. The Conservative Party claimed this shift as evidence that capital ownership was in the process of being democratized. In practice, investing became more institutionalized than ever in late-twentieth-century Britain: inclusion frequently meant tying one’s fortunes to the credit, insurance, pension, and mortgage industries to maintain independence from state-run support systems. In tracing the rise of a consumer-oriented mass investment culture, historian Amy Edwards explains how the "financial" became such a central part of British society, not only economically and politically, but socially and culturally, too. She shifts our focus away from the corridors of Whitehall and towards a cast of characters that included brokers, bankers and traders, newspaper editors, goods manufacturers, marketing departments, production companies, and hundreds of thousands of ordinary men and women. Between them, they shaped the terrain upon which political and economic reform occurred. Grappling with the interactions between structural transformation and the rhythms of everyday life, Are We Rich Yet? thus understands the rise of neoliberalism as something other than the inevitable outcome of a carefully orchestrated right-wing political revolution.

Book The London Stock Exchange

Download or read book The London Stock Exchange written by Ranald Michie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-04-26 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, the London Stock Exchange will be 200 years old, though its origins go back a century before that. This book traces the history of the London Stock Exchange from its beginnings around 1700 to the present day, chronicling the challenges and opportunities it has faced, avoided, or exploited over the years. Throughout, the history seeks to blend an understanding of the London Stock Exchange as an institution with that of the securities market of which it was - and is - such an important component. One cannot be examined satisfactorily without the other. Without a knowledge of both, for example, the causes of the 'Big Bang' of 1986 would forever remain a mystery. However, the history of the London Stock Exchange is not just worthy of study for what it reveals about the interaction between institution and market. Such was the importance of the London Stock Exchange that its rise to world dominance before 1914, its decline thereafter, and its renaissance from the mid-1980s, explain a great deal about Britain's own economic performance and the working of the international economy. For the first time a British economic institution of foremost importance is studied throughout its entire history, with regard to the roles played and the constraints under which it operated, and the results evaluated against the background of world economic progress.

Book The Origins of Europe s New Stock Markets

Download or read book The Origins of Europe s New Stock Markets written by Elliot Posner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1995 and 2007, financial elites in more than a dozen western European countries engaged in a cross-border battle to create some twenty new stock markets, many of which were explicitly modeled on the American Nasdaq. The resulting high-risk, high-reward markets facilitated wealth creation, rewarded venture capitalists, and drew major U.S. financial players to Europe. But they also chipped away at the European social compacts between national governments and citizens, opening the door of smaller company finance to the broad trend of marketization and its bounties, and further subjecting European households and family businesses to the rhythms of global capital. Elliot Posner explores the causes of Europe’s emergence as a global financial power, addressing classic and new questions about the origins of markets and their relationship to politics and bureaucracy. In doing so, he attributes the surprising large-scale transformation of Europe’s capital markets to the rise of the European Union as a global political force. The effect of Europe’s financial ascendance will have major ramifications around the world, and Posner’s analysis will push market participants, policymakers, and academics to rethink the sources of financial change in Europe and beyond.

Book R D Decisions

Download or read book R D Decisions written by Alice Belcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R&D Decisions, Strategy, Policy and Innovations explores how research and development decisions affect all of us. They are linked inextricably to the performance of firms and of economics as a whole. Their importance means that they are of concern to a large number of practitioners, policy-makers and researchers. This book demonstrates the range of issues and perspectives which R&D can encompass and at the same time brings out the elements which unite them. The papers in this book are organized into three main sections: * Strategy and Organization explores the importance of R&D and of the structures and strategies of individual organizations. The emerging 'core competence paradigm' is especially noted. * Policy and Performance looks at what new thinking on R&D more generally implies for government policy and the performance of industries, regions and economies. * Disclosure and the Market examines issues raised by changing regulations on the disclosure of R&D expenditure.

Book Law and the Political Economy of Hunger

Download or read book Law and the Political Economy of Hunger written by Anna Chadwick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an inquiry into the role of law in the contemporary political economy of hunger. In the work of many international institutions, governments, and NGOs, law is represented as a solution to the persistence of hunger. This presentation is evident in the efforts to realize a human right to adequate food, as well as in the positioning of law, in the form of regulation, as a tool to protect society from 'unruly' markets. In this monograph, Anna Chadwick draws on theoretical work from a range of disciplines to challenge accounts that portray law's role in the context of hunger as exclusively remedial. The book takes as its starting point claims that financial traders 'caused' the 2007-8 global food crisis by speculating in financial instruments linked to the prices of staple grains. The introduction of new regulations to curb the 'excesses' of the financial sector in order to protect the food insecure reinforces the dominant perception that law can solve the problem. Chadwick investigates a number of different legal regimes spanning public international law, international economic law, transnational governance, private law, and human rights law to gather evidence for a counterclaim: law is part of the problem. The character of the contemporary global food system-a food system that is being progressively 'financialized'-owes everything to law. If world hunger is to be eradicated, Chadwick argues, then greater attention needs to be paid to how different legal regimes operate to consistently privilege the interests of the wealthy few over the needs of poor and the hungry.

Book The Future of Financial Regulation

Download or read book The Future of Financial Regulation written by Iain G MacNeil and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Financial Regulation is an edited collection of papers presented at a major conference at the University of Glasgow in spring 2009, co-sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council World Economy and Finance Programme and the the Australian Research Council Governance Research Network. It draws together a variety of different perspectives on the international financial crisis which began in August 2007 and later turned into a more widespread economic crisis following the collapse of Lehman Brothers in the autumn of 2008. Spring 2009 was in many respects the nadir since valuations in financial markets had reached their low point and crisis management rather than regulatory reform was the main focus of attention. The conference and book were deliberately framed as an attempt to re-focus attention from the former to the latter. The first part of the book focuses on the context of the crisis, discussing the general characteristics of financial crises and the specific influences that were at work this time round. The second part focuses more specifically on regulatory techniques and practices implicated in the crisis, noting in particular an over-reliance on the capacity of regulators and financial institutions to manage risk and on the capacity of markets to self-correct. The third part focuses on the role of governance and ethics in the crisis and in particular the need for a common ethical framework to underpin governance practices and to provide greater clarity in the design of accountability mechanisms. The final part focuses on the trajectory of regulatory reform, noting the considerable potential for change as a result of the role of the state in the rescue and recuperation of the financial system and stressing the need for fundamental re-appraisal of business and regulatory models.
