Entomological societies, and even the daily press. As an example of the number of such publications on American economic ento mology, the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture, has cited no less than titles that had appeared to January I, 1905, and the number of references to noxious insects is about The average farmer has neither time nor Opportunity to consult a tithe of these 12, 000 odd works, and it is therefore the object of the follow ing pages to collate concise accounts of the principal insects which affect one class of crops - vegetables. Book Insects Injurious to Staple Crops Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insects Injurious to Staple Crops Classic Reprint written by E. Dwight Sanderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Staple Crops The sources of information concerning the insects affecting our staple crops are widely scattered throughout the bulletins of the State Agricultural Experiment Stations and of the United States Department of Agriculture, a few books on Economic Entomology, and various other publications. Few men but the entomologist have the desire or ability to glean an account of any given insect from the first-mentioned publications, if they know of the existence of others than those published by their own State station. The few books which have been written upon American Economic Entomology usually give but a brief and summary account of any given insect, too brief - it seems to the writer - to give a very clear understanding of the matter. In preparing the following pages the author has been more and more impressed by the fact that for the control of most of the worst insect pests of our staple crops, the farmer must depend very largely upon general methods of farm practice. This being the case, it is essential that he have a correct knowledge of the pest to be combated; such a knowledge of its life-history as will make plain the reason for the effect of any given procedure against it. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Insects Injurious to Truck Crops After the larvae or young commence to appear, the plants showing the greatest injury are treated with the dust, this application usually being held sufficient for some time. The lancl-plaster application is from three to four times as expensive as a Paris-green spray of equal strength, and in several cases in the Norfolk region the application of the unnecessary plaster to the already acid soil has produced a state of disease in the cabbage crop following the potatoes which has lessened the production to a considerable degree. In the case of a spray this acidity is not imparted to the soil and injury to cabbage is thus avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
