Book Citrus Fruit Insects Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Fruit Insects It has been estimated that the average cost of fumigation per tree, taking the whole of the citrus belt, amounts to about 30 or 40 cents, which means an expense of approximately $30 to $40 per acre, and this is done on an average about every other year. This is intensive insect fighting, but when the improved market value of the fruit is considered, it is money judiciously spent with such a valuable crop as the orange or lemon. Book Insects Affecting the Orange

Download or read book Insects Affecting the Orange written by Henry Guernsey Hubbard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Affecting the Orange Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a special report which was ordered by Congress upon the "Insects affecting the Orange Tree." This report has been prepared by Mr. H. G. Hubbard, who has been employed as a special agent at Crescent City, Fla., and who has devoted his time for nearly four years in studying the insects that affect the Orange, and especially in practical experiments to counteract their injuries. It is but uttering a deserved compliment to say that the practical results of his labors have been most satisfactory, and mark an important era in the history of orange-growing in the United States. The trees of the Citrus family are particularly subject to the disastrous ravages of various species of Scale-insects, which not infrequently thwart all effort to raise a grove. It is to these that the present report is chiefly devoted, and to their control that the greatest efforts were made. Mr. Hubbard's work was confined to Florida, but the remedies are applicable to other orange-growing sections of the country. Prof. J. H. Comstock had already published much upon the Scale-insects affecting the Orange in California in the report of this Department for 1880, and his work has been very freely used in the present report. The delay in the printing of the report has been partly due to the ill health from which Mr. Hubbard has suffered during the past year, and which has necessitated considerable office work, in which I have had the assistance, which 1 take pleasure in acknowledging, of Messrs. Howard, Schwarz, and Pergande. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Fruits It has been the aim of the author of this work to bring together all the important facts relating to insects known to be injurious to fruits in all parts of Canada and the United States, to add to the information thus obtained the knowl edge he has acquired of the habits and life-history of many of our insect pests by an experience of over twenty years as a fruit-grower and a student of entomology, and to pre sent the results in as concise and plain a manner as possible, avoiding all scientific phraseology except such as is necessary to accuracy. The arrangement adopted under the several headings, by which the insect pests which attack the different parts of the tree or vine under consideration are grouped together, will, it is hoped, with the aid of the illustrations, greatly facilitate the determination of any injurious species. When having before him its history briefly traced and the remedies which have been found most useful in subduing the insect, the reader will at once be enabled to decide as to the best meth ods to be employed. The author desires to make the fullest acknowledgment to those of whose work he has availed himself. Book Biology and Control of Citrus Insects and Mites Classic Reprint

Download or read book Biology and Control of Citrus Insects and Mites Classic Reprint written by Henry Josef Quayle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology and Control of Citrus Insects and Mites Earlier bulletins published by the University of California on citrus insects have been out of print for several-years, and the aim of the present publication is to replace in part those earlier bulletins, for which there has been a constant demand, as well as to bring the subject Of citrus-insect control in California up to date. Since many of the requests call for detailed information on the biology of the pests, and because such information is least available, it seems desirable to cover that phase of the subject as adequately, as the limited space in this publica tion will allow. The order of discussion of the pests is more or less in accordance with their classification as they occur in the animal kingdom, and not necessarily in accordance with their relative importance as pests of citrus. Book The Insects Destructive to Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Insects Destructive to Fruits Classic Reprint written by Mark Vernon Slingerland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Insects Destructive to Fruits Insects are among the most formidable enemies to success ful fruit-culture. The losses occasioned by the plum curculio alone amount to more than a million of dollars annually. Orchardists are sometimes deterred, by the attacks of this in sect, from attempts to raise the apricot, nectarine, peach, and plum; and the market supply of apples and pears is often much disfigured by it. The apple-worm, or codling-moth, is even a more formidable insect pest. New York fruit-growers alone yearly furnish $2, worth of apples and worth of pears to feed this insect; and other similar apple-growing States report nearly as large an annual loss from its ravages. The depredations of many other insect pests, like the apple tree and the peach-tree borers, the canker-worms, the tent caterpillars, the apple maggot, and the pear psylla, each causes annual losses amounting to several hundred thousand dollars. As a general rule those remedial measures are of little value, which attempt merely to repel insects without destroy ing them. Experiments show that rarely is an insect repelled from attacking any part of a plant by the application of odor ous substances, like carbolic acid, tar, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Classic Reprint written by Henry Josef Quayle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Next to the scale insects, red spiders and mites are the most important pests of citrus trees in California. On account of their small size, and because the foliage and fruit of the tree are not conspicuously marred either by their presence or by the covering of sooty mold fungus, as is the case with some of the scale insects, the actual injury done by red spiders and mites is not always appreciated. _their distribution is very general over the citrus sections, and they may be found in some numbers at most any season of the year. So long as they do not become numer ous the injury they do is, not important and in such cases it is not good economy to apply treatment. Because of their more orless continual presence in scattering numbers some growers take red spiders as a mat ter of course, and fail to recognize their importance when they become abundant and do damage, or come to a realization of their injurious nature after most of the damage has been done and the spiders them selves begin to disappear, as they often do. While, therefore, the presence of spiders in scattering numbers should be the cause Of no par ticular concern, the presence of. Excessive numbers of spiders should be the cause of enough concern for the grower to start immediately to apply control measures. Dropping of the leaves and fruit is the ultimate result of red spider injury. But the cause should be checked long before this extreme effect is evident.
