Book Insects Injurious to Young Trees on Tree Claims Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insects Injurious to Young Trees on Tree Claims Classic Reprint written by Lawrence Bruner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Young Trees on Tree Claims In the third place, the comparative aridity of the region where these claims are located renders tree growth somewhat slower then where the precipitation of moisture is more bountiful. This slowness of growth, while it is an advantage in one respect, aids the insect foes to a considerable extent in their work of destruction. A rank and rapid growth places a tree out of danger from external enemies much more quickly than will a slow growth. At the same time, in a rank growth, a much greater amount of food is furnished for the same number of insects, and as a consequence, less injury results than if the growth were slower. Book Woodpeckers in Relation to Trees and Wood Products Classic Reprint

Download or read book Woodpeckers in Relation to Trees and Wood Products Classic Reprint written by Waldo Lee Mcatee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woodpeckers in Relation to Trees and Wood Products Woodpeckers are peculiarly dependent upon trees, which furnish them food, shelter, and cradles for their young. No birds are more highly specialized nor more perfectly adapted to a particular mode of life than are most woodpeckers to arboreal existence. Moreover, as trees are important to woodpeckers, so are these birds important to trees. Woodpeckers benefit trees by consuming many of the most destructive forest pests, insects largely inaccessible to other birds. In securing these insects, however, which constitute the bulk of their food, and in making nests and shelter cavities, woodpeckers have another significant economic relation to trees, for they remove bark and wood from both dead and living trees. In the case of dead trees little or no harm is done. When, however, they make excavations in living trees, the birds destroy more or less of the cambium layer, from which proceeds the growth of both wood and bark. Slight injuries to the cambium result in distorted growth, but the destruction of large areas may cause death. Since trees are exceedingly valuable to man, the habits Of birds whose relations to trees are so vital are Of much economlc Importance. It is the purpose of this bulletin to examine the evidence for and against woodpeckers and to determine their status according to the effect Of their habits upon trees and wood products. Injuries by woodpeckers are treated under two heads: (1) Damage by wood peckers in general; (2) injuries due almost exclusively to the three species properly known as sapsuckers. Book The Painted Hickory Borer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Painted Hickory Borer Classic Reprint written by Edward Henry Dusham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Painted Hickory Borer The hickory is one of the most important of our American hardwoods, not only on account of its fruit, but especially because of the valuable qualities of its wood. Tough as hickory is not only a familiar expres sion but an apt phrase as well, for its wood is heavy, hard, strong, and exceedingly tough. It is on account of these qualities that, more than any other wood, hickory is used in the manufacture of such commodities as are subject to excessive strain. Consequently, more than one-half of the hickory cut today is used in the construction of vehicles or their parts, and at least one-third is made into handles for articles in which strength and toughness are the main considerations. In addition to these, agri cultural implements consume three per cent of the entire cut, while the remaining five per cent is used in the manufacture of athletic goods, porch furniture, and various other commodities. The factory uses of hickory as given by Kellogg may be summarized in percentage as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Text Book of the Diseases of Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Text Book of the Diseases of Trees Classic Reprint written by Robert Hartig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of the Diseases of Trees Some fifty years ago a number of able investigators, of whom only Saxesen, Th. Hartig, and Ratzeburg need be named here, applied themselves to the study of insects. The life-history of forest insects, their harmfulness or usefulness, soon became the favourite study of many practical foresters, and in a few decades the joint efforts of numerous workers were rewarded by the elevation of Forest Entomology to the position of a much appreciated subject of scientific instruction, which has become the common property of all educated foresters. The case was otherwise with those plant-diseases which cannot be ascribed to the injuries of animals. Their investi gation was delayed until quite recently; for it was only after botanical science, by the aid of its chief instrument, the microscope, had obtained a clear insight into the normal strue ture and vital phenomena of plants, and especially after the study of fungi had been prosecuted in the last few decades by a series of distinguished investigators, that the examination of the phenomena of disease in the life of plants could be undertaken with a prospect of success.
