Download or read book Cytogenetics written by J. Schulz-Schaeffer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1961 the author has taught a course in Cytogenetics at Montana State University. Undergraduate and graduate stu dents of Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Animal and Range Science, Plant and Soil Science, Plant Pathology and Veterinary Science are enrolled. Therefore, the subject matter has been pre sented in an integrated way to correlate it with these diverse disciplines. This book has been prepared as a text for this course. The most recent Cytogenetics text was published in 1972, and rapidly developing research in this field makes a new one urgently needed. This book includes many aspects of Cytogenetics and related fields and is written for the college student as well as for the researcher. It is recommended that the student should have taken preparatory courses in Principles of Genetics and Cytol ogy. The content is more than is usually taught during one quar ter of an academic year, thus allowing an instructor to choose what he or she would like to present to a class. This approach also allows the researcher to obtain a broad exposure to this field of biology. References are generously supplied to stimulate orig inal reading on the subject and to give access to valuable sources. The detailed index is intended to be of special assistance to researchers.

Book Cytogenetics in Plant Breeding

Download or read book Cytogenetics in Plant Breeding written by J. Sybenga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory discussion of basic chromosome structure and function preceeds the main text on the application of cytogenetic approaches to the analysis of the manipulation of both the genetic make-up and the genetic transmission system of plant breeding material. Analysis using light and electron microscopy, segregations and molecular techniques, yields information for assessing the material before and after manipulation. Much attention is given to quantitative methods. Manipulation not only involves the construction of specific genotypes, but also chromosomal transmission systems. Although analysis and manipulation in the somatic cycle are considered, the focus is on the generative cycle, with emphasis on analysis and subsequent segregation of specifically constructed material. The book is intended for plant breeders and other scientists interested in the analysis and manipulation of breeding material at the chromosomal level. Comparisons with molecular and cell biological approaches are made, and the potential of the various methods is evaluated.

Book Techniques in Animal Cytogenetics

Download or read book Techniques in Animal Cytogenetics written by Paul Popescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical background of cytogenetics as well as the practical methods to investigate chromosomes from Drosophila to mammals and humans are presented in this book. Theory and practical protocols on the following topics are included: Cell culture methods, chromosome preparation and banding techniques, radioactive and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) methods and their derivates (chromosome painting), meiotic chromosome methods using light and electronic microscopy, the polytenic (Drosophila) and lampbrush (urodeles) chromosomes as well as flow and slit scan cytometry. The editors, all at INRA, played a prominent part in the development of cytogenetics. Paul Popescu, a specialist for domestic animals worked with gene mapping, Helene Hayes, together with Popescu showed the homology of bovine and human chromosome disorders, and Bernard Dutrilaux focused on human cytogenetics.

Book Human and Mammalian Cytogenetics

Download or read book Human and Mammalian Cytogenetics written by T. C. Hsu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of science is mostly written retrospec tively, a generation or two after the actual events being discussed. Science historians are now analyzing and evaluating the origins of evolutionary and genetical theory in the nineteenth century and a sort of "Darwin industry" seems to have grown up. A history of mammalian cytogenetics by one of the main participants is, hence, a very welcome change, since it has a vividness, an immediacy and a personal flavor which these scholarly tomes and the official biog raphies of scientists mostly lack. The life of the author, Chinese-born, T. C. Hsu, has been a romantic and color ful one, and he is himself a unique personality, so that his book is a very unusual blend of reminiscences, history of his special field (which has transformed human genetics) and wise comments on the mistakes made along the way. The best qualities of a very fine Chinese mind have contributed to Dr. Hsu's career, including this book. Those qualities (which seem to me especially Chinese) include a kind of transparent honesty, a very direct em pirical approach to problems and superb technical ability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the Proceedings of the Twenty-Sixth Annual Biology Division Research Conference held April 9-12, 1973 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The subject of the symposium was Molecular Cytogenetics and the aim of the meeting was to bring together researchers interested in problems of chromosome organi zation, activity and regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Cytological, biochemical and genetic approaches to these questions were included since the collective information gained from these disciplines provides an integrated approach to genome structure and function. The meeting was sponsored by the Biology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory*. It would not have been possible with out the interest and cooperation of the organizing committee under the chairmanship of O. L. Miller, Jr. Special thanks are due to the chairmen and speakers for making this volume possible and to Dr. Waldo Cohn for his assistance in editing. Preparation of the completed volume was due in large part to the efforts of Sandra Vaughan of the Biology Division. The Editors Barbara Ann Hamkalo John Papaconstantinou August, 1973 * Operated by the Union Carbide Corporation for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

Book Practical Manual on Plant Cytogenetics

Download or read book Practical Manual on Plant Cytogenetics written by Ram J. Singh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earlier books on the handling of plant chromosomes have not included many of the innovations in cytological techniques for many important crops that have become available in recent years, including information on associating genes with chromosomes. The aim of this book is to compile all the plant cytogenetic techniques, previously published in earlier books, into a laboratory manual. The first part of the book describes standard cytological techniques that are routinely used by students. The second part covers methods used for specific crops for which common cytological methods do not work satisfactorily. The third part discusses cytogenetic techniques (cytology and genetics) for physically locating genes on specific chromosomes. This novel book will be highly useful to students, teachers, and researchers as it is a convenient and comprehensive reference for all plant cytogenetic techniques and protocols.
