Book Inquiries Elementary and Historical in the Science of Law Classic Reprint

Download or read book Inquiries Elementary and Historical in the Science of Law Classic Reprint written by James Reddie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inquiries Elementary and Historical in the Science of Law Some apology may, perhaps, seem requisite, for a practical lawyer allotting any portion of his time to studies so much apart from the routine and technicalities of ordinary business, as those, which form the subject of the following inquiries. The author's original design was the composition of practical treatises on the principles of maritime and commercial law, national and international. But from his having devoted himself to the discharge of the duties of a provincial semi-judicial office, and from his consequent want of leisure, he was, in the former of those projects, fortunately for the public, anticipated by his friend, the present learned Professor of the Law of Scotland in the University of Edinburgh, enlarging his excellent treatise on Bankruptcy, into his still more valuable commentaries on the principles of Mercantile Jurisprudence. Book Scientific Research in Education

Download or read book Scientific Research in Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-03-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers, historians, and philosophers of science have debated the nature of scientific research in education for more than 100 years. Recent enthusiasm for "evidence-based" policy and practice in educationâ€"now codified in the federal law that authorizes the bulk of elementary and secondary education programsâ€"have brought a new sense of urgency to understanding the ways in which the basic tenets of science manifest in the study of teaching, learning, and schooling. Scientific Research in Education describes the similarities and differences between scientific inquiry in education and scientific inquiry in other fields and disciplines and provides a number of examples to illustrate these ideas. Its main argument is that all scientific endeavors share a common set of principles, and that each fieldâ€"including education researchâ€"develops a specialization that accounts for the particulars of what is being studied. The book also provides suggestions for how the federal government can best support high-quality scientific research in education.

Book Laws and Explanation in History

Download or read book Laws and Explanation in History written by William H. Dray and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book challenges the popular view that the logical structure of explanation in history can, in every case, be elucidated in terms of subsumption under covering law. It argues that departures from this logical model in ordinary historical writing cannot satisfactorily be explained away as incomplete or defective cases, and it endeavours to show how the attempt to do this may lead philosophers to read into explanations offered by historians more than is really intended, while, at the same time, important featues of what is intended are missed. In a series of independent but converging arguments, some problems raised by the uniqueness of historical events, the rationality of human actions and the logical grammar of casual language are discussed in this connexion, and the pragmatic dimension of explanation is also explored". -- Publisher.

Book The Idea of History in Constructing Economics

Download or read book The Idea of History in Constructing Economics written by Michael H. Turk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How scientific is economics? This question has often been framed by analogies and correspondences made between economics and other, seemingly more well-established scientific disciplines, starting with classical mechanics. At the same time economics is likely to be seen in opposition to or in contrast with history, where the reliance upon generalizing rules, thought experiments, and model construction in economics is set against the amassing of particular facts intended to create narratives in history. In this new volume, Turk explores the relationship between economics and history, including the often fraught one between economics and economic history, making the case that economics does in fact require the proper grounding in history that has so often been ignored. This work challenges the attempt to link economics with other, more clearly ‘scientific’ disciplines as flawed and fundamentally wrongheaded. A key element of this book is its examination of the gaps and associations that exist in, or are seen through, linkages with thermodynamics, classical mechanics , biology, literature, mathematics, philosophy, and sociology. This exploration is frequently undertaken through study of the work of one or more major figures in the history of economic thought, ranging from Quesnay and Smith, through Walras and Max Weber, to Robinson, Krugman, David, and Arthur. Through the possibility of an alternative to the gaps noted in each such comparison, the underlying, necessary connection between economics and history can be brought out. The book concludes by exploring the basis for the positive construction of a historical economics. This book is suited for those who study history of economic thought and philosophy of economics.
