Book Amendments and Construction Systems for Improving the Performance of Sand based Putting Greens

Download or read book Amendments and Construction Systems for Improving the Performance of Sand based Putting Greens written by Chang-Ho Ok and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of a putting green is dependent upon an ideal root zone which is achieved from appropriate mixtures and construction systems. The overall objective of this research project was to compare 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis plustris Huds.) performance in selected construction systems (treatments) during green estabilishment and maturation. Treatments included sand-based putting greens amended with organic or inorganic materials including peat, calcined clay, and zeolite. These treatments were compared with the California and USGA green construction systems. The four treatments compared were: California (100% sand), USGA 90% sand and 10% peat, v/v), a modified California system (California-P; 82% sand and 15% Profile with 3% humate, v/v), and an additional modified California system (California-Z; 85% sand and 15% zeolite, v/v) in terms of short (green establishment) and long term (green maturation) bentgrass performance. The four treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. The California-P and California-Z treatments in general had higher water infiltration rates and lower bulk density values throughout the study. The California-P and California-Z treatments produced bentgrass color and quality ratings that were equal to or better than the California treatment and consistently higher than the USGA treatment throughout the study. The USGA treatment had higher bentgrass shoot water stress compared with the California and modified California treatments during drought periods. The California-P and California-Z treatments, in general, maintained higher concentrations of nutrients and the California-Z treatment reduced potassium leachate concentrations at selected sampling times throughout the study relative to the California and USGA treatments. In central Missouri's humid and temperate climate, root zones amended with inorganic material in the California putting green construction system provided better physical and chemical properties with better creeping bentgrass quality compared with the USGA system during green establishment and maturation.

Book Applied Soil Physical Properties Drainage and Irrigation Strategies

Download or read book Applied Soil Physical Properties Drainage and Irrigation Strategies written by Lambert B. McCarty and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a realistic blend of basic knowledge and understanding in soil physical properties. It will enable the reader to scientifically analyze soils to develop practical and successful means of providing sufficient drainage and to develop science-based irrigation strategies. Only basic mathematical knowledge is necessary to understand and apply the proven principles covered. With limited resources that are increasing significantly in costs, the book blends the ideal concept of providing sufficient drainage and irrigation based on using soil physical properties but with financial limitations in mind. One traditional problem with many Soil Physics, Drainage, and Irrigations-based texts is the prerequisite of understanding complicated calculus-based mathematics. Although necessary for a theory-based text, our text was developed with practitioners in mind where such complicated mathematics was avoided but referenced if the reader wishes to further explore the specific topic. Another problem with many traditional texts is the lack of practical examples or case-studies allowing readers to relate their specific scenarios to similar types of situations. We have purposely included numerous examples and practical field experiences. This is especially true when many of the theoretical ideals are covered, followed by explanations of how such ideals can be applied in the laboratory and field.

Book Turfgrass

Download or read book Turfgrass written by John C. Stier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 1348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is a key framework for analyzing biological systems—and turfgrass is no exception. It is part of a complex that encompasses turfgrass interactions with different environments and the suitability of different turfgrasses for specific environments. In addition to its biological role, turfgrass—in the form of lawns, green spaces, and playing surfaces—brings beneficial sociological effects to an increasingly urbanized society. This book presents a comprehensive overview of current knowledge and issues in the field of turfgrass research and management, including the genetics and breeding, the diseases and pests, and the ecology of turfgrasses, and will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.

Download or read book The Soil Underfoot written by G. Jock Churchman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest part of the world’s food comes from its soils, either directly from plants, or via animals fed on pastures and crops. Thus, it is necessary to maintain, and if possible, improve the quality—and hence good health—of soils, while enabling them to support the growing world population. The Soil Underfoot: Infinite Possibilities for a Finite Resource arms readers with historical wisdom from various populations around the globe, along with current ideas and approaches for the wise management of soils. It covers the value of soils and their myriad uses viewed within human and societal contexts in the past, present, and supposed futures. In addition to addressing the technical means of maintaining soils, this book presents a culturally and geographically diverse collection of historical attitudes to soils, including philosophical and ethical frameworks, which have either sustained them or led to their degradation. Section I describes major challenges associated with climate change, feeding the increasing world population, chemical pollution and soil degradation, and technology. Section II discusses various ways in which soils are, or have been, valued—including in film and contemporary art as well as in religious and spiritual philosophies, such as Abrahamic religions, Maori traditions, and in Confucianism. Section III provides stories about soil in ancient and historic cultures including the Roman Empire, Greece, India, Japan, Korea, South America, New Zealand, the United States, and France. Section IV describes soil modification technologies, such as polymer membrane barriers, and soil uses outside commercial agriculture including the importance of soils for recreation and sports grounds. The final section addresses future strategies for more effective sustainable use of soils, emphasizing the biological nature of soils and enhancing the use of "green water" retained from rainfall.

Book Best Management Practices for Saline and Sodic Turfgrass Soils

Download or read book Best Management Practices for Saline and Sodic Turfgrass Soils written by Robert N. Carrow and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex issues involved in the management of saline and sodic turfgrass soils are enough to perplex even the most experienced site manager — there is no "silver bullet" amendment, treatment, or grass for salinity management. Best Management Practices for Saline and Sodic Turfgrass Soils: Assessment and Reclamation presents comprehensive scientific principles and detailed, practical management and assessment recommendations for turfgrass and landscape sites. The authors use the Best Management Practices (BMPs) concept, considered the gold-standard management approach for any individual environmental issue, since it is a whole ecosystem (holistic), science-based salinity management approach that allows all possible management options to be considered and implemented on a site-specific basis. They identify BMP strategies, including irrigation system design; irrigation scheduling and salinity leaching; chemical, physical, and biological amendments; cultivation; topdressing; soil modification; sand-capping; surface and subsurface drainage options; nutritional practices; additional cultural practices; and ongoing monitoring. The book presents emerging challenges, technology, and concepts that address integration of salinity management into comprehensive site environmental or sustainable management systems, use of halophytic turfgrasses for non-traditional purposes, integration of geospatial and geostatistical concepts and technology, and integration of new sensor technology into daily management paradigms. Outlining a holistic BMP approach, the book incorporates scientific principles and practical management recommendations and details specific salinity challenges and the logic behind each BMP strategy for salinity management, with an emphasis on actual field problems. The book is formatted for flexible use, with stand-alone chapters that include outlines for quick review of a topic for those requiring only a basic understanding as well as in-depth discussions of the science and practical aspects for those seeking a more rigorous treatment. It supplies a single source for all the information required to identify and manage diverse types of salinity stresses.
