Academics and practitioners have produced much literature with diverse interests and with varying multidisciplinary knowledge on different topics within the multivariate domain. Due to multivariate algebra being of sustained interest and being a continuously developing field, its appeal breaches laterally across multiple disciplines to act as a catalyst for contemporary advances, with its core inferential genesis remaining in that of statistics. It is exactly this varied evolution caused by an influx in data production, diffusion, and understanding in scientific fields that has blurred many lines between disciplines. The cross-pollination between statistics and biology, engineering, medical science, computer science, and even art, has accelerated the vast amount of questions that statistical methodology has to answer and report on. These questions are often multivariate in nature, hoping to elucidate uncertainty on more than one aspect at the same time, and it is here where statistical thinking merges mathematical design with real life interpretation for understanding this uncertainty. Statistical advances benefit from these algebraic inventions and expansions in the multivariate paradigm. This contributed volume aims to usher novel research emanating from a multivariate statistical foundation into the spotlight, with particular significance in multidisciplinary settings. In particular, the majority of industrial experiments have two goals: • To quantify the dependence of one or more observable response variables on a group of input factors in the design or the manufacturing of a product, in order to forecast the behavior of the system in a reliable way. • To identify the level settings for the inputs (design parameters) that are capable of optimizing the response. The set of rules that govern experiments for technological improvement in a ph- ical set-up are now comprehensively labeled “DoE. ” In recent years, the use of - perimentation in engineering design has received renewed momentum through the utilization of computer experiments (see Sacks et al. 1989, Santner et al. 2003), which has been steadily growing in the last two decades. These experimentsare run on a computer code implementing a simulation model of a physical system of int- est. This enables us to explore the complex relationships between input and output variables. Themain advantageofthis is that thesystem becomesmore“observable,” since computer runs are generally easier and cheaper than measurements taken in a physical set-up, and the exploration can be carried out more thoroughly. The America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 expanded and codified NCSES's role as a U.S. federal statistical agency. Important aspects of the agency's mandate include collection, acquisition, analysis, and reporting and dissemination of data on research and development trends, on U.S. competitiveness in science, technology, and research and development, and on the condition and progress of U.S. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Improving Measures of Science, Technology and Innovation: Interim Report examines the status of the NCSES's science, technology, and innovation (STI) indicators. This report assesses and provides recommendations regarding the need for revised, refocused, and newly developed indicators designed to better reflect fundamental and rapid changes that are reshaping global science, technology and innovation systems. The book also determines the international scope of STI indicators and the need for developing new indicators that measure developments in innovative activities in the United States and abroad, and Offers foresight on the types of data, metrics and indicators that will be particularly influential in evidentiary policy decision-making for years to come. In carrying out its charge, the authoring panel undertook a broad and comprehensive review of STI indicators from different countries, including Japan, China, India and several countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa. One of the topics considered at that symposium was the health of innovation in the federal statistical system. A consequence of the symposium was an agreement by the Committee on National Statistics to hold a workshop on the future of innovation in the federal statistical system. This workshop was held on June 29, 2010. The original statement of task for the workshop focused on three challenges to the statistical system: (1) the obstacles to innovative, focused research and development initiatives that could make statistical programs more cost effective; (2) a gap between emerging data visualization and communications technologies and the ability of statistical agencies to understand and capitalize on these developments for their data dissemination programs; and (3) the maturation of the information technology (IT) discipline and the difficulties confronting individual agencies in keeping current with best practice in IT regarding data confidentiality. This report, Facilitating Innovation in the Federal Statistical System, is a descriptive summary of what transpired at the workshop. It is therefore limited to the views and opinions of the workshop participants. However, it does not strictly follow the agenda of the workshop, which had four sessions. Instead, it is organized around the themes of the discussions, which migrated across the four sessions.

A more recent focus has been on measuring innovation in the corporate sector. NCSES collects its own data on science, technology, and innovation (STI) activities and also incorporates data from other agencies to produce indicators that are used for monitoring purposes - including comparisons among sectors, regions, and with other countries - and for identifying trends that may require policy attention and generate research needs. NCSES also provides extensive tabulations and microdata files for in-depth analysis. Capturing Change in Science, Technology, and Innovation assesses and provides recommendations regarding the need for revised, refocused, and newly developed indicators of STI activities that would enable NCSES to respond to changing policy concerns. This report also identifies and assesses both existing and potential data resources and tools that NCSES could exploit to further develop its indicators program. Finally, the report considers strategic pathways for NCSES to move forward with an improved STI indicators program.
