It furthermore addressed the multifaceted challenges and barriers for knowledge management (knowledge acquiring, knowledge conversion and knowledge diffusion) across the value chain of Ethiopian leather industries. The Ethiopian leather sector is a priority sector which has a lack of human power in both pre-slaughter and post-slaughter techniques or process which affects the whole value chains of the leather industries Among others, porter's VC model which focused on primary and supportive activities for material flow. The researcher used both primary and secondary data and analyzed using SPSS software. The major findings were the selected evaluation factors, KA (knowledge acquiring evaluation factors), KC (knowledge conversion factors) and KD (knowledge diffusion factors) are confirmed to proposedinnovation value chain structural model which recommended for Ethiopian leather industries. Finally, it can also use for other industries with same adjustment.

Book excerpt: Interest in the topic of governance and interfirm relationships in the Ethiopian leather and leather products industry was developed after observing a gap in the literature on value chain research at the international level and finding only a few empirical studies on value chains at the local level. Most of the value chain research conducted throughout the world are either too general or are simply functionalistic and, thus, fail to address the socio-cultural context. This study contributes to the literature in several ways: firstly, the present research suggests that a central focus of value chain analysis should be the examination of social networks within local, but also global, value chains, as social relations might play an important and so far neglected role in the struggle to participate in the rapidly changing world economy. Secondly, as a clear departure from mainstream value chain research, this study makes use of a mixture of value chain and network approaches for exploring processes and micro-level interactions used by individuals to construct and maintain networks.

Thus, green supply chain management (GSCM) has emerged as an important organizational strategy in the modern business environment. In Ethiopia, many manufacturing firms adopt GSCM principles into their systems. Environmental concepts are embraced by many manufacturing industries, specifically in the Leather industry, which is one sector affected due to their unique features such as raw material, process, and environmental regulations. The main purpose of this study was to identify barriers to the implementation of green supply chain management in Ethiopia leather& leather product industry. Data were gathered through survey methods. Participants represented the top and middle-level managers in the leather industry in Ethiopia. This study employed a descriptive type of research and it employed a survey research strategy to capture the relevant information from the respondent. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (Mean & standard deviation). The findings show that the cost of implementation, Lack of customer's awareness towards GSCM & green products, Lack of skilled/quality/ human resource professionals in sustainability, experience training to personals in GSCM were rated as major challenges in implementing green supply chain management.

Manufacturing companies around the world, particularly in emerging economies, have an increased awareness of green concepts and attempt to adopt environment-friendly practices. The leather industry in Ethiopia is facing severe pressure to minimize environmental pollution. Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practice improves environmental performance by integrating environmental concerns into supply chain activities. This study assesses the current practices of GSCM in Ethiopia's leather and leather product industry by employing descriptive type of research. The data was collected using a questionnaire. The target population for the study was 92 registered leather and leather product manufacturing companies in Ethiopia. Data was collected from top and middle level managers in the leather industry of Ethiopia and the collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation). The results indicate that the companies in Ethiopia's leather and leather product industry have significantly initiated the implementation of GSCM practices in terms of internal environmental management practice, eco-design, green manufacturing practice, green packaging and investment recovery, while green distribution practices, cooperation with customers and reverse logistics evidenced a low level.

Book excerpt: The scope of the study reported in this book entails understanding the constraints and providing potential diagnostics to Africa’s leather sector, which is otherwise globally, one of the most lucrative agro-based industries in the world, estimated at over US$ 130Billion. One of the principle core thematic aspects of the leather sector is, characteristically, its long value chain with multiple socio-economic dimensions. These entail employability, creation of wealth, gender parity and rural development. Thusly, in an effort to stimulate scholarly discussion, the study argues that preemptively, the problems facing the leather value chain stratums are high losses, low value addition initiatives and unexplored opportunities that are synonymous with the Africa’s leather industry. Indeed, the results of the research conceptualized opportunity management as a critical panacea towards value addition strategy for the leather sector in developing countries. In dealing with this concept, the book evaluated the various value chains phases and identified nine specific issues and variables drawn between value addition and the main leather strata. With this background, the study posed a main question and four sub questions to closely expound on related hypotheses and in lieu pursue four thematic aspects: trade, productivity, competitiveness, and innovation covered in twelve chapters of the book. Conclusively, the book manages to successfully conceptualize as a novelty that opportunity management is integral towards developing a leather value addition strategy for the developing countries with particular emphasis to Africa.
