Download or read book Inn By The Bye Stores 3 written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an endeavor to find a fresh way into the scriptural text upon which I would be preaching, I began to develop an imaginary world, populated primarily by wee folk. I found that the characters I developed and the way that they evolved in my mind and on the page served me well as a consideration of how I sensed things happening in the scriptural text at hand. I want to make these stories and the world they represent newly accessible, and so I bring them to book form fifty at a time.

Book excerpt: These meditations take a verse from one of the lectionary texts not chosen for preaching for a given service and offer a devotional reflection on the verse, often using the context of the entire pericope as described in the lectionary. I try to make them worth the while of my readers, finding a fairly broad readership among the congregations I served through the years. The Cross on the cover was made by William Herbert Durst in his Florence workshop. Mr. Durst was the grandfather of Mary-Bess Halford-Staffel who calls it his “Trinity Cross”.

Looking back on my poems, written and now collected, I discover I see things anew—not only the remembered incidents (when that happens) but also the vision created in my mind by the poem itself. These poems, collected from parts of the life I ran past again recently, are things that offer glimpses of what is seen and what that seeing seems to mean. I find that poems best serve me in becoming the creators of insights and perspective. The poems in this book have been giving that gift to me again.
Download or read book Without a Flock written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the free church tradition, the pastoral prayer has long assumed an important place in the worship of the congregation. It is expected that the pastor will have a more or less extended prayer pertinent to the day and/or to the run of the service in general. Under the circumstances of normal practice, these would involve awareness of a congregation, or a "flock" for a pastor to tend. After ending a normal pastorate and entering retirement and the far more occasional happenstance of entering a pulpit as a guest, the regular preparation for a worship-leading practice became desirable, personally. As a part of that preparation, most often without entering the leadership of worship, least of all as pastor, the pastoral prayer was prepared. This book collects eleven years worth of pastoral prayers, linked to the preaching text of the day by way of the sermon prepared. As there is no flock as reference point, these are, indeed, "Without A Flock".

Download or read book A Second Cantica Sacra written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a minister in practice, hymns are a part of the whole scheme of things. And, doing the things that matter in ministry, dealing with hymns is a natural. Being by habit and development somewhat of a writer, I tried my hand at hymn texts as well. After some experimentation, I came to taking my idea - most often a passage of scripture I intended to use as a basis for preaching - and reflecting on it under the impress of a chosen hymn tune - I used one hymnal or another to discover the tunes. Of recent years, I have followed my way through Common Praise, the latest revision of Hymns Ancient and Modern, to provide the tunes. These 200 hymn texts all fit into that pattern; four of them were requests by a friend for a program on ‘Sing a New Song’ that he was to lead, the rest being aimed at the usual development. I found they served me as a first round reflection on the text. On occasion, when I was serving a congregation, I would use one for worship; now, of course, I do not, though they are shared through a liturgical materials web site another friend maintains and there is some evidence that some of them have been used by others. This book makes the texts available to anyone interested. Purchase of the book supplies the right to use them as well.

Book excerpt: Faces and actions of people and animals; the flair of nature and the subtleties of interaction; the way life arrives for me to observe and live, to hear and sense, to engagethat is what spawns my poetry. Those poems selected and chosen from a past, with a few more contemporary in their lure to me and my pencil, are drawn together in this collection as a sampler of my engagement with life. I hope you find them engaging and inviting so that you may entertain the actions of the poem as it writes itself upon your mind, creating there your own experience of life, readying for the open engagement with what life directly brings to bear upon you.
Download or read book Cacophony of Silence written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-12-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My poems sharpen my sight, so that I see better what is there to be seen. I will find some situation or image or nuance that catches my eye, intrigues me. Sometimes, that seeing lends itself an image for me, and then a line, just one at first that, when written down, enters into a cadence, a rhythm, a sense of sound and echo that emerges into a sequence of lines that flow, usually quickly. And then, the lines stop. the images seem complete, and then they announce to me that the poem is complete. That is true whether the image is a raindrop, a face, a pose, a tree, a flower, a bird, a shadow, or the innuendo of faith or country - whatever. This book draws upon poems written some years ago, mostly in the years 2009 and 2015. There are also a few current poems that insist themselves into the collection as they are accumulated in the current year’s file. As I revisit poems of years ago, quite often the occasion presents itself to memory - but not always so. Sometimes, that occasion is as if unnecessary and, indeed, almost in the way of the poem as it has come to be. Revisiting is always a pleasure; it becomes one of the spurs toward forming the collection itself. Indeed, it is the pleasure and the satisfaction in the book that brings it about. Satisfaction is such a boon to life.
Download or read book Paul s Letter to the Romans written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible studies I chose to do in answer to the request of my first congregation out of seminary sought to present a serious, somewhat-scholarly approach to the interested among my parishioners. In every case, I took a book to study, assuming that it was written to be read from the beginning, and to make sense to the reader in that format. I was most interested in finding what the author or compiler or editor, as the case may be, sought to convey. I have found the studies of value to me personally and professionally and felt that they were generally well received as I led them. Revisiting these studies now finds them again of fresh value to me. I hope they prove to be so for you as well.

Download or read book Writings on the Spiritual Life written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abbot Andre Louf said that, when a person decides to get serious about the spiritual life, s/he should acquire a spiritual director. Wayne Proudfoot argued that the form of religious experience depends upon the tradition in which it is perceived. Georges Bataille searched out the meaning of his own intense inner experience in non-traditional ways. This book seeks to follow the meaning of traditional measures of the spiritual life learned through the experience of the author once his spiritual life decided to choose him.
