Download or read book Stereochemical Analysis of Alicyclic Compounds by C 13 NMR Spectroscopy written by James K. Whitesell and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987-04-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through numerous conversations with other synthetic chemists it became apparent that the great power of carbon nuclear magnetic resonance was being significantly underutilized. In our own work we have found that 13C spectroscopy is a more powerful tool than IH NMR spectroscopy, especially for probing subtle stereochemical questions in complicated systems. This is especially true in five membered ring compounds where IH NMR is at a particular disadvantage. The two techniques can be used independently to solve the same question-that of stereochemistry - but they do so in different ways. Advantage can be taken in IH NMR of a relatively consistent relationship between stereochemical orientation and coupling constants between vicinal protons, while in 13C NMR it is the correlation between spatial relationships of non-hydrogen, y substituents and their effect on chemical shift that can be used to assign stereochemistry. It was also clear that the use of 13C NMR required a different approach to problem solving than that typically used with IH NMR. While the latter technique could be employed with a very general approach (e.g., the Karplus equation), 13C NMR would, at least for the immediate future, require a relatively extensive set of model systems from which the consequences of stereochemical changes could be derived for any given carbon framework.
Download or read book Managing epidemics key facts about major deadly diseases written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epidemics and pandemics of infectious diseases are occurring more often, and spreading faster and further than ever, in many different regions of the world. The background factors of this threat are biological, environmental and lifestyle changes, among others. A potentially fatal combination of newly-discovered diseases, and the re-emergence of many long-established ones, demands urgent responses in all countries. Planning and preparation for epidemic prevention and control are essential. The purpose of the Managing epidemics handbook is to provide expert guidance on those response. Building on the first edition, the second edition provides concise and basic up-to-date knowledge with which World Health Organization country representatives can advise Ministries of Health to respond effectively and rapidly at the very start of an outbreak. Part I of the handbook provides insights on epidemics of the 21st century and offers context on the upsurge of recent epidemics. Part II has been updated and offers 10 key facts about 19 deadly diseases including tips on the interventions required to respond. Part III presents various Tool boxes that summarize guidance on several important topics. The handbook focuses on practical and indispensable things to know about infectious diseases that are most important for national, political and operational decision-makers; it also links readers to more exhaustive WHO guidance.

The Berry-AMA Book Prize is awarded annually be the Foundation (AMAF) and recognizes books whose innovative ideas have had significant impact on marketing and related fields. For additional information about the Berry-AMA Book Prize, visit Berry-AMA Book Prize. Why do some people drink black coffee and others stick to tea? Why do some people prefer competitors’ products? Why do we sell less in this country? Many companies fail to acknowledge and analyze disparities observed among customers and simply put them down to culture or emotion. New neuroendocrinological research proves that consumers are rational: They just have a different biological perception of the same stimulus! Their preferences, behavior, and decisions are strongly influenced by the hundreds of millions of sensors monitoring their body and brain. People with more taste buds are for example sensitive to bitterness and are more likely to drink their coffee with sugar or milk, or to drink tea. After reading the book, managers will be able to: • Understand and predict consumers’ behavior and preferences • Design the right sensory mix (color, shape, taste, smell, texture, and sound) for each product • Fine-tune their positioning and product range for every local market • Systematically increase their innovation hit rate
Download or read book Philosophical Issues in Psychiatry written by Kenneth S. Kendler and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary collection explores three key concepts underpinning psychiatry—explanation, phenomenology, and nosology—and their continuing relevance in an age of neuroimaging and genetic analysis. This book opens with Dr. Kenneth S. Kendler’s introduction to the philosophical grounding of psychiatric practice. Chapters in the first section of the book then address the concept of explanation, from the difficulties in describing complex behavior to the categorization of psychological and biological causality. In the second section, contributors discuss experience, including the complex and vexing issue of how self-agency and free will affect mental health. The third and final section examines the organizational difficulties in psychiatric nosology and the instability of the existing diagnostic system. Each chapter includes both an introduction by the editors and a concluding comment by another of the book’s contributors. Contributors: John Campbell, PhD; Thomas Fuchs, MD, PhD; Shaun Gallagher, PhD; Kenneth S. Kendler, MD; Sandra D. Mitchell, PhD; Dominic P. Murphy, PhD; Josef Parnas, MD, DrMedSci; Louis A. Sass, PhD; Kenneth F. Schaffner, MD, PhD; James F. Woodward, PhD; Peter Zachar, PhD "This is a serious and important book . . . it is certainly one that researchers, scholars and anyone involved in trying to explain the nature of psychiatric disorders to a skeptical audience ought to read."—British Journal of Psychiatry Kenneth S. Kendler, MD, is the Rachel Brown Banks Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia, where he is also a professor of human genetics and the director of the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics. He is the author of Genes, Environment, and Psychopathology. Josef Parnas, MD, DrMedSci, is a professor of psychiatry and the consultant medical director for the Department of Psychiatry at Copenhagen University. Download or read book Cognitive Psychodynamics as an Integrative Framework in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy written by Tony Ward and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a novel method of combining the current approaches to counselling and psychotherapy into one coherent framework. The authors argue that the cognitive behavioural tradition (largely focused on thought patterns) and the psychodynamic approach (centred on the client’s experience and relationships), can be successfully integrated with insights from cognitive neuroscience, to form a fruitful synthesis. In doing so they provide a perspective that will enable practitioners to more fully appreciate each client’s unique inner world, based on their individual history and environment. The authors point towards the brain’s innate ability to understand and learn from experience so as to direct the growth of that inner world. This book elaborates a method of tapping into this innate growth potential, so as to help clients move forward when they have become trapped in non-productive patterns or mental stalemates. It will provide fresh insights and a valuable resource for counselling psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as for academics and students in these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years ago, the first genetically modified foods took their place on the shelves of American supermarkets. But while American consumers remained blissfully unconcerned with the new products that suddenly filled their kitchens, Europeans were much more wary of these “Frankenfoods.” When famine struck Africa in 2002, several nations refused shipments of genetically modified foods, fueling a controversy that put the issue on the world's political agenda for good. In Food Fray, esteemed molecular biologist Dr. Lisa H. Weasel brings readers into the center of this debate, capturing the real-life experiences of the scientists, farmers, policymakers and grassroots activists on the front lines. Here she combines solid scientific knowledge and a gripping narrative to tell the real story behind the headlines and the hype. Seminal and cutting-edge, Food Fray enlightens and informs and will allow readers to make up their own minds about one of the most important issues facing us today.
