Book excerpt: This research studied combustion enhancing geometries and shock reflection on generating a hydrocarbon/air detonation wave in a combustion tube. Ethylene was used as a baseline fuel to determine the preferable geometries. Propane was then used in later testing because of its combustion similarities with heavy hydrocarbon fuels such JP5, JP8, and JP10. Three criteria were used to measure the effectiveness of the combustion enhancing geometries: ability to generate a detonation, wave speed, and time for shock formation. The evaluated geometries included flow-restricting orifice plates and a Schelkin spiral. The shock reflection was accomplished by a vertical fence (large orifice) placed in the last fourth of the tube length. The optimum geometry was found to be the orifice plate used in conjunction with the spiral. Detonations occurred when using ethylene in this configuration, but did not develop when using propane. Because propane's overall reaction rate is slower than that of simpler fuels, more large- and small-scale turbulence to further enhance combustion needs to be generated to create a detonation wave in a short distance when using complex hydrocarbons, such as propane.

Book excerpt: It is known that the Chapman-Jouguet theory of detonation is based on the assumption of an instantaneous and complete transformation of explosives into detonation products in the wave front. Therefore, one should not expect from the theory any interpretations of the detonation limits, such as shock initiation of det onation and kinetic instability and propagation (failure diameter). The Zeldovich-Von Neuman-Doring (ZND) theory of detonation appeared, in fact, as a response to the need for a theory capable of interpreting such limits, and the ZND detonation theory gave qualitative interpretations to the detonation limits. These interpretations were based essentially on the theoretical notion that the mechanism of explosives transformation at detonation is a combustion of a layer of finite thickness of shock-compressed explosive behind the wave shock front with the velocity of the front. However, some experimental findings turned out to be inconsistent with the the ory. A very small change of homogeneous (liquid) explosives detonation velocity with explosive charge diameter near the rather sizable failure diameter is one of the findings. The elucidation of the nature of this finding has led to the discovery of a new phenomenon. This phenomenon has come to be known as the breakdown (BD) of the explosive self-ignition behind the front of shock waves under the effect of rarefaction waves.

Book excerpt: The organization of an Advanced Research Workshop with the title “Detection and Disposal of Liquid Explosives and Flammable Agents in Connection with Terrorism” was motivated by international findings about activities in this field of application. This ARW followed a meeting about the “Detection of Disposal Improvised Explosives” (St. Petersburg, 2005). Both items show the logistic problems as one of the lessons, terrorists have to overcome. These problems are connected with the illegal supply and transport of explosives and fuels and as counter-measure the detection of these materials. The invention of liquid explosives goes back to the middle of the 19th century and was used for special purposes in the commercial field of application. Because of the high sensitivity of liquid explosives against mechanical shock, caused by adiabatic compression of air-bobbles producing “hot spots” as origin of initiation the commercial application was not very successful. Because of this high risk, liquid explosives are not used in military or commercial application with some exceptions. In the commercial field explosives as slurries or emulsions consisting of suitable salts (Ammoniumnitrate etc.) and water are used to a large extend because of their high insensitivity. In many cases these slurries or emulsions were unfit for terrorist actions, because of their low sensitivity, large critical diameter and using in confinement. In the military field liquid explosives are used in World War I and II as bomb-fillings.
